congrats to class of 2010 :)

thanks dainese!:
oh, im not doing summer classes i was talking about fall lol but to get priority registration for fall, I need to join connect 4?
and I’m really concerned on how difficult it is to get classes as an incoming freshman ): I am hoping to take at least 4 classes per semester… is that even possible?
and how hard are the classes at Mt.Sac? I took a lot of AP classes during HS so I was wondering if theyre going to be as tough as them )':
thanks!

@sunny:

Yes, you need to sign up for connect 4 ASAP. You have to be coming out of high school from the Walnut Valley School District (I believe its either Walnut HS or Diamond Bar HS, but maybe I’m missing one or two).

4 classes per semester is normal. If you do get priority with connect 4, might as well take a lot of classes your first semester, get all the good professors and timings. Maybe 5 classes? about 15 units? Trust me, after your first semester, its gunna be hell getting classes.

I took a lot of AP classes as well, and I found Mt Sac classes to be the same, or even EASIER then some AP classes. Main reason is that you have so much time in college, since you don’t go to school EVERY day from 8am to 3pm.

Good Luck!

lol yea seriously. mtsac is easy peezy compared to some of the torture that higschool students endure.

wake up late, go to class alert and actually awake. college if very time friendly and flexible.
you will do fine. 4 classes is what i did and its easy. this is my first semester taking 5 and its takign a toll on me. i dont know how some honors students do 26 units.

@AAW00 & Dainese: thanks again! Haha you guys help me out always (':
I’m still waiting on my connect 4 stuff to come in the mail ToT… can I still sign up w/out them? If so, how? (And yup, I’m from DBHS ;O)
And yup I’m gonna try taking around 4-5 classes the first semester (: I hope I can get the classes I want T0T!
And how hard is it to maintain a 3.5+ GPA there? I’ve noticed that the avg college GPA is noticeably lower (around like 3.0ish) than the avg GPA @ HS… Why is it like this D:?
During the summer semester, how many classes is a student allowed to take?
Thanks!! :D

Nice, I went to DBHS too.

It isn’t too hard to maintain a good GPA. Just stay on top of things, do HW, ect. Coming from DBHS, and taking AP classes, you should be well prepared.

You can take up to 7 units in the summer.

@sunny - well…3.5 is easy. IMO. but everyones different. w/e you do, dont procrastinate. and if you do, make sure you do it well.

on the contrary to your finding of lower GPA in college, ive noticed higher GPAs. but then again, most of the students i know are highschool failures who turned around at a CC. ppl who have lower GPAs at a CC probably are not as motivated, not focusing, or simply not seeking help.

theres this belief that once you go to a CC your stuck there, maybe they are falling into that stereotype. fear of success maybe? or even fear of failure.

either way, from what ive seen, heard, and experienced. CC is much easier than HS.

and if you are getting priority reg for fall 2010, get all the classes that usually are impossible to get for freshman. like…math, sciences, or english. do NOT get music appreciate, rock history, or some other easily attainable classes.

^^^ Thanks again you guys XD !
OK! So I went for counseling yesterday! Mm… The counselor (Mark?) recommended me taking 4 classes as a safe way to start my first semester off as a student, just so I am able to gauge how well I can do and how much I can handle… I think that sounds pretty reasonable mm. And he said I should be able to get them since I will be joining the Connect 4 program (: So my classes are:
- Chem 40
- Engl 1CH <– How hard is this class… really ): ?
- Math 110
- Arch 32 <– My dad wanted me to try it out So I will give architecture a shot!
Although… I really hate to admit this but >': I felt like he wasn’t really knowledgeable in certain things… like I am very very glad I did research on the classes I needed to take cos a lot of the time during the appointment, I had to continuously correct and remind him about the classes UCLA’s nursing program required and the prereqs that some of Mt. Sac’s classes had and I even had to tell him that UCLA DOES have a prelicensure nursing program (I was sitting there thinking like really… h-how do u not know this… sweating) And he seemed like he had a horrible headache most of the time…
Aigoo >__<" But basically, I am hoping the choice of classes I made there are good ones! And there were somethings he told me like “You don’t have to take Chem 10” (since I wanted to take it because a prereq for Biol4H was that) that made me a little uneasy and unassured but because he was the counselor, he must have known better (!!!)… eeh…
But good good news is that I talked to the informations desk people about Connect 4 and I should be able to sign up for it pretty soon once I get some stuff cleared next week !
Ah, sorry I wrote a lot this time!
But thanks so much for always helping me (T v T )/

lol. your expressions are always funny.

thats great news sunny
blackmamba, make sure you do the connect4 program too

sounds like a nice load of classes you have, although im not sure if arch 32 is IGETC.
ENG 1CH is hard for some. but if u placed that high up…i dont think english is hard for you. and yes i agree, mtsac counselors (atleast from my experience) dont know much. the person you want to talk to is LINDA DIAZ in the honors office. make an appointment ASAP and she is the one who will know everything. she will probably be correcting you haha

btw do you know theres a chem placement test? if you pass you can skip chem 40 and jump to chem 50. try it. doesnt hurt if u fail. i failed by 2 pts. and i havnt taken chem since sophomore year (im class of 07).

4 classes is always good. although the counselor is right that it is good to gauge how well u can handle classes, what i suggest is taking 5 and then dropping the class if you cant handle all 5. dropping does NOTHING to you as long as you drop before the drop date. it doesnt look bad or anything. but if you miss the drop deadline THEN it will look bad because you get a W on your record. and if you miss the W drop deadline its even worse cuz u get a F.

if i were you id try to take 5, be aware of deadlines, try it. cant hurt :)

good lucK!!

I would do the connect4 program but im not part of walnut school district… :(

oh ****…gg man :(

disregard that pm then lol.

sunnybaNANA: You got placed into Eng1CH as a freshmen? holy shiet

dainese: haha

Hello again!

I have a question regarding Financial Aid. It says here on the site:
You have unsatisfied student requirements for this aid year.
Your estimated cost of attendance is $10,702.00.
You have been awarded financial aid which totals $774.00.
Based on your academic transcript, the status of your academic progress is Not Yet Reviewed as of Fall 2010.
View your financial aid history.

But I haven’t submitted a Copy of Valid Picture Identification “as of May 16 2010”! Oh no! Do I just go to the Mt.Sac Financial Aid Department and give them a copy of my student ID? (taking driving test on July 1 >.<).

My registration date for summer 2010 begins today at 2 PM! Argh, hopefully I’ll get a good class…

Edit: The instructions state “Must submit a clear copy of a Picture Identification Card to the financial aid office in order to proceed with your application process.” Does this mean any picture ID???

well a valid one yes.

drivers license or passport will do. i dont think a student ID is legit enough, but bring it anyway haha

and gl getting classes, almost everything is full. try to waitlist, and keep refreshing and keep trying to waitlist.

and goodluck on your driving test! watch for those pesky pedestrians ._.x

This is going to sound really dumb but am i really wasting this much money?

oh yeah, i didnt send them an ID either like CruxSC…do i just go to them at the finance office and show it to them?

You need to give them a copy. Either mail or give it in person.

I got the same amount as you for financial aid :)

@nikki - you may not be spending that much because you probably live close, but for those that commute and rent to live near by, those numbers can be very real.

Is Mt.Sac really all that different from Citrus College? I just completed two semestes at Citrus. Although it was so impacted I only got two clasees (Six Units) each semester, so in reality it was like I’d been there for just one semester.

Anyway… I’m from the West Covina area, and basically right in the middle where going to Sac and Citrus are the aprox. the same disance.

Now, I’d consider myself a fairly motivated student, I had a 3.25 GPA in high school, took A.P classes, etc. I got into Cal Poly Pomona, but tey rejected my admission ( got a d+ in Algerbra II) But Citrus has this ~vibe~ like, oh it’s okay to take as long as you’d like to transfer, why even try?

So, to get back on topic, is Mt.Sac, in your opinion, more motivating towards it’s students? I know it varies from student to student, but as we are on College Confidential, I assume we all are motivated. But talking about class selection,or more specifically, class availability. I know CC’s are impacted as a general rule of thum, but idk.

I like Citrus in all, but I’m not sure it’s going to get me anywhere anytime soon. IDK.

Has anyone here been to both instituions. Because you all seem to love, and I mean, love Mt.Sac.

So, what do you think? Stay at Citrus or Migrate to the cross town rival?

good question. as you can see not many people on the “community colleges” forum are from citrus. if you say theres that vibe, id believe you.

when people think of CCs, the following are listed, PCC, MT SAC, SMC. the rest are not as well known but it doesnt mean you cant transfer out of them.

its really hard to say if mtsac, or any cc for that matter, will motivate a student body to transfer. of course if you seek the help, they will root for you. but for those that dont seek help, of course they wont bother.

but, if you join the honors program at any CC, you will most likely be motivated to strive for the best. because then youll be surroudned by individuals who push you to study and get awesome grades. since im done with mtsac and have gone through honors, i can tell you that it was hands down, one of the best decisions of my life.

and if you have the right attitude, any CC is right. but the CC atmosphere can be a bit of a drag with students who have been there for X amount of years.

my friend from mtsac failed a placement test here, but passed over there. she said it was easier. and she got her class fairly easily. a math class too!

i say you check out mtsac. see what they have to offer. what you really want to do is compare honors programs at mtsac/citrus. but im not going to lie, mtsac is probably dramatically more impacted than citrus.

where are you trying to transfer to?

I’m thinking about transfering to UCLA, or maybe a private school like Pomona College or Loyola Marymount, but it depends on financial aid, truthfully.

I know Citrus has a honors program that has TAP with UCLA, the same as SAC.

[Honors Program at Citrus College](Honors Transfer Program at Citrus College)

It seems like an okay program, but I’m not sure how it compares to the one SAC. I wonder, if you apply to an honors program at one CC, will it be able to transfer to the other? Same with the placement tests, because I’ve heard that the placement tests at SAC are comparably more difficult than at Citrus. (You have an actual writing portion, correct? We did not…) And seeing as I placed in to English 101 here (Whicever is your equivelant to Freshman English)

Also the fact the Mt.Sac is such a huge school compared to Citrus, which is really the reason I chose Citrus to begin with. Citrus=Smaller campus, more accesibility and less confusion to a first time freshman like me.

But thank you for your help, it really is much appreciated!
