Congratulations to everyone who was accepted! Does anyone have information about Northeastern’s deferral policy, especially specifically deferral for the NU in program. I want to defer my acceptance to earn money for a year.
Rejected
GPA: 4.0
ACT: 32
Class Rank: Top 12% of class
Senior year AP: Biology (no score yet)
Intended Major: Sociology
Essays: I think my essay was strong.
Recs: Should have been strong, though guidance counselor isn’t that close to me.
Many extracurriculars- mainly focused on music.
Why I was rejected:
First of all, a LOT of people from my school applied. Not sure if that had to do with it. Also, I only took one AP class this year. I was not expecting to get in, haha, it was a long shot. I don’t even compare to the others from my school who got in. Congratulations to everyone that made it, that’s fantastic!!
I’ve been accepted into UNH, UVM, UMass A., and Binghamton. Still waiting on BU, Brandeis, and U. of Rochester.
ACCEPTED
GPA 3.6
SAT 1260
Published a book, founded an international conference, amazing rec letters, amazing common app essay.
Daughter accepted to N.U. in from Rhode Island! Strong private high school. After a slow start in high school, overall GPA 3.5 but trending upward with 3.8 for Junior and Senior years (so far). 30 ACT. Very strong essay and recs. Good public service and ecs. She is very happy!
Zomaso, with your numbers you will be fine. Don’t worry.
@NoMoreFishing which high school?
She’ll be annoyed if she knows I’m talking about her but I will say it is one of the private schools on the east side of Providence.
@hahahannah You can defer your NUin acceptance the same way you would a typical fall admit acceptance, I believe. There was a girl in Canada with me this fall who took a gap year.

@suzyQ7 I beg to differ, as I got accepted with a serious FA package while needing a ridiculous amount of FA. I’m sub <30k bracket and alright test scores and gpa. I’m more than confident that I was accepted based off my professional work and community work. Which considering NE is a super professional school, made a big deal
Was accepted to the Explore Program yesterday!
CGPA: 3.74, however, a large upward trend with 3.91 in my senior year
IB: 38/45
Pleasantly surprised, as my stats are weaker than the average admitted applicant. That being said, I believe they look at the application in a holistic manner, as I had some decent ECs, recommendations and a somewhat coherent essay.
did anyone get the dean’s scholarship for the college of computer and information science school? if so, how much did you receive? thanks!
@TomSrOfBoston “If a low stat student at say the 25th percentile of potentially admitted students needs a lot of FA, they may be denied while a student with similar stats but full pay would be accepted”
That’s what I said, wasn’t it?
My point was - the highest stat students were offered merit or FA in December and February. The remaining RD students who’s decisions came out yesterday were likely all in the bottom half of the admission pool. Of those students, if their admission profile were close and one student needs a lot more FA than the other, the full pay student probably gets the acceptance. That said, admissions IS holistic and they are giving FA to their most desired students of yesterday’s pool. My thought is - for the students they really want, they ‘will make it happen’ (like @AgelessFall ) but there is probably a huge swath of applicants that have good (not great) stats but nothing really outstanding or NEU thinks they are using them as safety… in those cases the full pays may get the acceptance over the non full pays. When you read stats of 3.9 UW GPA and 33 ACT getting denied vs some others that are 3.5 GPA and 30 ACT being accepted- it seems odd. But maybe they needed a lot of aid and they weren’t compelling in other ways.
Decision: Accepted after deferral (admitted to NU.In program)

I included some humor in my essay. It didn’t seem forced, it was completely organic and it fit well, a lot of my friends, family and teachers thought it was funny. Write a good essay but you don’t have to make it all that serious!
General Comments & Advice:
Keep your GPA up. I honestly regret getting such a low GPA, I wish I studied more and got a 3.8+ UW. However, that was then, and this is now. Stoked I got in!

Nothing. I don’t think I would’ve gotten anyways. The applicant pool was extremely competitive and I think I underestimated it. I really wanted to get in; it was my top choice, but everything happens for a reason. I had my moment of sadness but maybe I was meant to go somewhere else.

Honestly, I think GPA and SAT are extremely important. Definitely way more important than extracurriculars and essay. I was hoping that they could look past my weak score, but they didn’t. Congrats to everyone who got in!!
