Reflection

Strengths: I was passionate about everything I did and had some things that fed into my intended major. Also I have decently rigorous schedule and my recommendations were good.
Weaknesses: I’m not really underrepresented and I don’t have any good hooks. Also my extracurricular/job/volunteer list is pretty small compared to a lot of people.
Why you think you were accepted/deferred/rejected: Honestly I’m sort of surprised I got in. I think I was accepted probably because I showed interest by visiting campus and had a pretty decent application.

General Comments:
I’m excited to go to college! This experience is sort of insane, though, because I was expecting to do apps over break and have all of next semester stressing about where I got in and stuff, and now it’s all over. It almost doesn’t feel real.

Essays:
-Common app: 8/10 it was a cliche topic but I manahed to really turn it around, all the people I showed it to really liked it.
-Why Northwestern: 9/10 I researched the university a lot and showed my genuine interest. It was also well written

Teacher Recommendation:
-Spanish teacher: 8.5/10 - she had me three years and the letter showed not only my academic side but my more personal side which I think shows that I more than just a student trying to get good grades.

  • 10th-grade Innovation Academy teacher 9/10 (this is a special program in my school that values autonomy and real-life experiences): he was one of the best teachers I’ve had and he allowed me to grow a lot as a person and you could definitely see that from the rec. it also highlighted my best qualities and showed another type of learner.
-Econ teacher: 8/10 mostly showed that I was a dedicated student and wanted more than just textbook facts.

Counselor Rec: no idea never read it, don’t have high hopes I didn’t really know him just went to his classroom to send things to universities and make sure my grades and everything was ready. Although he based himself on my grades and teacher recs so he had a good view of who I am as a student.

Why you think you were accepted/deferred/rejected: Combination and balance of everything

Counselor Rec: 8/10 Super cute!
Additional Rec:
Interview: nope

Other

State (if domestic applicant): TEXAS
Country (if international applicant):
Intended major(s): Neuroscience
School Type: Public
Ethnicity: Asian bby
Gender: Female
Income Bracket:
Hooks (URM, first generation college, etc.):

Reflection:

Strengths: I really emphasized my love for art in my app. I used my experience/passion for art to differentiate myself from other STEM applicants that solely based their app on their STEM awards and experience bc I knew it was really hard to get in as an Asian to a STEM major (rip). Classes, scores, rank, ecs
Weaknesses: I wrote my “Why NU” statement in a day- It could have been better! Scores could have been better

Why you think you were accepted/deferred/rejected:
I think I got in because of my extracurricular activities; my grades and scores helped, but I truly think my love for art and science is what helped me to get in. (and lots of praying :)) Also, I think my essay really helped the admission officers to see my personality and humanistic character (instead of looking at me like a piece of paper.)

General Comments:
Good luck everyone!! Northwestern is just one of the many amazing schools available in the world. Have fun and don’t stress too much. Everything will work out! Merry Christmassss

Job/Work Experience:
Part Time Stage Tech at School
Volunteer/Community service:
City Impact
Organization for Special Needs Families
Summer Activities:
2015 CSSSA
2017 Cherubs Theatre
Essays:
-Common App: talked about how I used to be super homophobic until I met my csssa roommate and how I was super scared of her when I learned that she was gay. I talked about how through our conversations, I had more in common with her than the members of my church and their homophobic views were what made me switch churches.
-why northwestern: talked about how I shadowed a theatre major freshman and how I could see myself in all of her classes
Teacher Recommendation:
-English teacher I had sophomore and junior year who used to be a northwestern theatre major (tbh I think this is what got me in because I’m sure she wrote great things about me)
-APES teacher from junior year who I was super close with and loved watching me in my shows
-Drama teacher who’s been my director for the past four years and likes my work ethic
Counselor Rec:
-she seemed to like me a lot I guess but tbh I think she’s closer to my mom than she was with me
Interview:
I was interviewed by a woman who went to my high school. Coincidentally she knew my college counselor. She was super chill to talk to and it felt more like a casual conversation about northwestern than an interview.

Other

State (if domestic applicant): CA
Intended major(s): theatre and communications
School Type: public
Ethnicity: Asian (korean)
Gender: female
Income Bracket: my dad refuses to tell me how much money he makes but we live in a super rich neighborhood

Reflection

Strengths: my application showed a lot of interest in the school
Weaknesses: not a lot of impressive extra curriculars
Why you think you were accepted/deferred/rejected:
-1. One of my rec letters was written by a teacher who majored in the same major I applied for
-2. I met the admissions director for my area when she visited my school and kept hounding her over email to send me a physical copy of the ED form so she probably remembered me.
-3. The summer program I attended after junior year. Literally so many of us who went to that program and applied ED got in.
General Comments:
Find people connected to your ED school and ask them to vouch for you. There were only two other people from my school who got in for ED; the one who is majoring in cello had the cello teacher personally save a spot for her, and the one who is going for soccer was recruited early by the coach.
Good luck!!!

Hi! I’m applying to SESP this year as an international student, and I have two questions:

  1. is it relatively easier to get in as a social science major in SESP than College of Arts and Sciences?
2)what are some tips for the Why NU essay?
    thank you so much!
