@anonstem Do you think they really do that?
@anonstem Or maybe you just weren’t a good fit for NU & UChicago. Both are top tier, well known schools that, unlike schools like Tufts and WashU, which are lesser known but still top level, don’t need to play yield games; people already know of their quality. If anyone should be playing yield games, it’d be UMich, Berkely, UIUC, or CalTech, the former 3 being public schools and the last being lesser known outside the west coast.
I know of people who got rejected to Berkeley and GaTech (as an IN STATE student) but got accepted to MIT. My cousin got accepted to Yale, NU, Vandy, USC, Columbia but got rejected to Brown, Princeton, UPenn, Duke, Stanford, MIT, & Notre Dame. It’s a gamble when it comes to schools so selective.
@Georgia101 UCLA is still a fantastic school! You should be proud. However, I sense that it wasn’t your top choice, which is reason for your disappointment?
Keep your head up.
Accepted to Medill w/ 3.98 uw, 4.38 wi, 34 ACT, 8 APs total. Okay LOR & common app essay w/ avg ECs. Each activity means a lot to me though and I think I got that across well. Also was actually proud of my Northwestern-specific essays! I took screenshots… hours later, I’m still kind of in shock lol. Congrats to everyone else who got in!
Rejected but happy for all you admits out there! Had a good taste of all the different decisions today: waitlisted at UChicago and accepted at UCLA.
Has anyone been able to access their financial aid award letters yet? It’s saying “information unavailable” for me.
Waitlisted here. Does anyone know about financial aid decisions? Will Northwestern give me financial aid estimates before I ask for a spot on the waitlist?
@IsaacTheFuture Not true. I can’t see a better fit… I apologize for sounding cocky but I just want to prove a point. I have perfect grades, perfect ACT/SATI&II, research awards at Siemens, NMSC finalist, US presidential scholar candidate, multiple AIME qualifier, great essays/recommendations, international awards, etc. I was WL@MIT too… but have very slim chances of actually making it in since they already over admit students.
The schools you mention all practice affirmative action to a large extent while Caltech & UCB do not (I’m OOS ORM -asian male). Caltech is very well known among top tech/engineering schools and is comparable to MIT (they play friendly quirky pranks on each other
For some reason, part of my previous pst got truncated.
If you read previous years’ posts, most of the HPME interviewees have been WL @ NU. Also, UChicago has a pattern of WL students from my school which is a feeder to top schools/ivies. My point is it isn’t right for schools to play yield games since there might be students who are genuinely interested in NU & UChicagand not necessarily the ivies. Let the waiting games begin…
@gueybaby2 i was deferred and then accepted today!
@GeoffWii2
That’s because Northwestern is significantly better
Go enjoy Stanford and Caltech, those schools are amazing!
CONGRATS TO THE NEW CATS!!! SO EXCITED TO HAVE Y’ALL HERE!!!
CONGRATS TO EVERYONE WHO MADE IT, AND GOOD LUCK TO ALL OTHERS!! There are many fine institutions out there that will be lucky to have you.
@anonstem Oh, you’re Asian from a (I assume) top level school. Ok, that gives me a little more perspective. In that respect, yeah, schools do typically reject students who would have otherwise gotten accepted if they didn’t go to a top feeder school or are of a majority/overachieving ethnicity. It’s sad really. I have an Asian male friend in a very similar situation as you who got rejected from UChicago and NU, though he had better ECs and Awards, and just as good grades, as me; however, when editing his essays he often noted how I was a much better writer than him, which was probably the deciding factor. Also, you have to remember that this isn’t really anything special or exclusive to the two Chicago schools; many schools, including MIT, Berkeley, and the Ivies practice it also.
Nonetheless, Asians are overly represented at NU (18-20%, iirc), as they are at nearly every elite private school. Also, when I said that you may not be a good fit, I wasn’t talking academic and EC wise, I meant essays (and interviews if you did one). THOSE are how schools get a feel for you as a student and how’d you fit into their school, and are often the determining factor. And honestly, you can’t know if you’re a good fit UNLESS you are a part of the admissions. Anything else is just speculation.
For every 2400/1600, 4.3 gpa student with stellar ECs who got rejected, there’s one who got accepted (as you’d probably see in this thread). When you have so many fantastic applicants, it literally comes down to spitting hairs and who fits your school better.
Nonetheless, congrats on your other accpetances, and I’m sorry about not getting into NU or UChicago, especially if those were two of your top choices. If it makes you feel any better, I got rejected to 2 of my 3 top schools, including my first choice (NU was second), who I thought I was more than qualified for.
for those rejected, I can speak to the fact that fit matters A LOT at Northwestern: I’m pretty sure admissions wants to consider what an applicant could bring to our community. it’s really not just test scores and extracurriculars…schools really want to admit students who will both do well and contribute to the university environment. and, in personal qualities, it’s really subjective. an advantageous personality trait at Northwestern could be detrimental at, say, Brown or something. if today isn’t your day, don’t give up!!! lots of fish in the sea, lots out there I’m really excited for all of you to start your college journeys! congratulations!
Hey guys, does anyone know when HPME results will be released?
Does anyone know the acceptance rate for waitlisted people and how many people get waitlisted??
Guys, listen to @MMSS2020 !!! I got rejected so hard from Northwestern but I got accepted to Pomona!! Everything happens for a reason
Edit: idk how the faces work
Hi - How do you check the admission decision? We didn’t get any email with portal instructions or admission decision letter access instructions. Can someone give detailed instructions please.
Hey guys! If I’ve learned anything through this process, I encourage all of you to think of what you will offer to the school, and if that school is genuinely a good fit for you. Just because you have perfect stats, does not mean a school will accept you, but trust me, you will be accepted at the school that is a good fit for you. And to people who don’t think they are good enough to get into a school like Northwestern, – Yesterday I was ACCEPTED…and I had a 1230 SAT and 4.0/4.1 GPA … anything is possible!! keep reaching high + never give up.
