** Official Northwestern Class of 2021 Discussion Thread **

My daughter (Asian Indian) with ACT: 35 (M:36; S:36; E:35:R:34; Writing:32); unweighted GPA: 3.98/4.00 (weighted: 4.60); 11 AP Classes including high end courses even in her Senior year Multi Variable calculus (only 1 B+ in all her life from Grade 6 onwards, otherwise Perfect A student all the way through.) State AP Scholar with Distinction; All 5’ & 4’s in the AP Exams so far she has taken; NHS Executive board; Lot of volunteer hours; Indian classical dancer with graduation scheduled in July; Indian Classical music singer; various accolades was DENIED by Northwestern yesterday for the class of 2021. She is in the top 1% of 720+ graduating seniors in one of the very good and known schools in the Chicago suburbs. My heart broke when I saw the denial from Northwestern. She was refused interview for their HPME program which I knew it’s lot tougher to get interview being an Indian origin. That was not upsetting but to get denied for the regular admission with the above record is mind boggling and something wrong with the decision process. I am sure quite a few people in my daughter’s position.

@blackgirlmagic GIRL SAME! I’m literally in the same boat! My SAT scores are alright but DEFINITELY not the northwestern type. But I think they saw how I really wanted to go there. I literally feel like the exact representation of your username :(( ANYTHING IS POSSIBLE BRUH

To all high-achievers who are disappointed with their NU decision, I am so sorry that you did not receive good news yesterday. However, I think some of you are looking at the process wrong… NU is not some lower level school where someone with excellent stats DESERVES to get in. NU accepts people who yes, are academically qualified and will succeed at NU, but ALSO will thrive and contribute to their campus feel and culture. I think the admissions office looks very hard for these people who truly fit Northwestern personality-wise, and that is not something that you can or should want to change. If you were rejected, it is not because you were undeserving in terms of your merits, but rather because NU would not give you your best college experience. To be honest, I’m sorry and I know you’re hurting, but all this talk of “I had x scores and achievements so I SHOULD have been admitted-the system is wrong!” just sounds arrogant and ridiculous to me. If you humble yourself, I am sure you will realize that this decision is for the best and you will have an AMAZING college experience wherever you go! And maybe be glad you probably won’t have to pay $70,000+/yr for college. :wink:

Please don’t think I am being heartless just because I was admitted. I have a resume above and below some people who were accepted and rejected, but I think my love for NU shown through in my supplement essay, because that is the only thing I can see really separating me from other (better) applications (I’m still in awe of this miracle). From what I see, if you can humble yourself and stop thinking you were “robbed” of an admission you “deserve,” the rejection will be easier to deal with and you can quickly move on and get excited to do bigger, better things at the place you truly belong.

Anyone else having trouble with making the Northwestern accounts? I don’t know what username I use to check my FA.

@WGSK88 - I agree with you - that really stinks that your daughter didn’t even get a “waitlist” from NU. With her record of achievements she’s bound to get in somewhere excellent and perhaps more appreciative of her smarts. A 35 ACT female is tops in any book, particularly if she’s looking to pursue something in STEM. Where else did she apply?

@malvernvarna - It’s outrageous for you to state “arrogance” from my statement that something went wrong in the decision process. The reason I am upset as a parent is that my daughter desperately wants to be in Chicago. That’s her top choice school. It’s not that she doesn’t understand there are other options for her including some ivy leagues. But the reason is more frustrating now she has to get out Chicago. I understand Race/ethnicity plays a key role in any University decision especially private schools, not that I am questioning this. This is her luck that it looks like most likely she has to go elsewhere her to do her pre-med.

@JBStillFlying - Thank you. She is more interested in the direct medical program. She has yet to hear from UMKC (6 year program) and UIC GPPA yet where she was interviewed for the same. She is also waiting to hear from Upenn and Brown University. She got into Case Western with $29.5K/year merit award. Her top choice is to be in Chicago and hence it hurts more to miss out on NW. Yeah that’s another mystery why she was even waitlisted at NW. Last year from her school 9 were admitted and 5 of them chose to go to NW. But this year we don’t know how many from her school was accepted yesterday. But I think one boy was accepted as part of Early decision from her school to NW.

@blackgirlmagic same sista same. I got a C my senior year and thought my life was destroyed. NU said “you thought!” But congrats to you! We will kill it out here. (:

@latinvibes YO CONGRATULATIONS ON POMONA!!! have a wonderful time in California :slight_smile: what a beautiful place

@GreaserGyal @blackgirlmagic =D>

I just started a GroupMe for admits. Anyone who wants to join is welcome! Here’s the link: https://app.■■■■■■■■■■■/join_group/29763453/V3QyiM

Does anyone’s financial aid page say “Information unavailable. Contact your financial aid office?”

Has anyone else still not received their email?

What are the odds of getting off the waitlist? I really want NU.

@lanabanana99 Yes. I guess they’re still working on FA

@crisisofexisting I’m in the same boat… mildly freaking out

You don’t need an email to check your portal. Just click the link found somewhere in this thread and you’ll find a link where you set up a portal and check your decision. They’ve already posted all the decisions lol.

@malvernvarna

Most applications are read in fifteen minutes or less. I know you want to think that your display of love for NU got you in, but more than likely it was a sympathetic reader who connected with you for some unknown reason or an institutional need that pushed you through.

If your application had been picked up by a different reader and he/she had put a deny on your file, all your love for NU that shines forth now would have disappeared. For unhooked applicants, this process is riddled with uncertainties and unpleasant and unexplainable surprises. You were just lucky.

Have you tried to do the forgot your password thing and then put in your email? Also check the junk folders of your email because I found my portal link in my junk folder. But if all else fails then just call em up on Monday.

Anyone else accepted to Bienen School of Music? I’m blown away, almost afraid it was a mistake!
