@kgsnow I was admitted to Weinberg, and I’m just waiting for them to email me saying “oops that wasn’t meant for you, you actually got rejected.”
@lievee123 Can you post your acceptance letter? Would love to know what it looks like lol congrats!!!
@ivyleaguedreamen here’s the acceptance letter i received:
"Dear XXXXX:
Congratulations and welcome to the Class of 2021 at Northwestern University! On behalf of Northwestern’s faculty, students, and alumni, it gives me great pleasure to inform you that you have been admitted to the Judd A. and Marjorie Weinberg College of Arts and Sciences.
The admission committee evaluates tens of thousands of applications each year, and your considerable academic achievements, extracurricular accomplishments, and impressive character stood out as truly exceptional. You will be joining a vibrant community of engaged faculty, students with diverse talents and backgrounds, and spirited alumni.
Northwestern will immerse you in an environment with limitless possibilities to learn, make a difference, and define your path for future success. We are confident that you will make a significant contribution to the life of the University, both in and out of the classroom.
I hope you have the opportunity to visit campus over the coming weeks. Our admitted student program, Wildcat Days, will give you the chance to meet faculty, advisors, current students, and your future classmates. You will also be welcome to attend classes and tour campus facilities. Details about Wildcat Days, as well as other important information for admitted students, can be found online at admit.northwestern.edu.
In the next few days via mail, you will receive an official copy of your decision letter and materials that outline steps toward enrolling in the Class of 2021. If you plan to accept your place in the incoming class, we need to know by May 1. Please note, our offer of admission is contingent upon the successful completion of your senior year and a review of your final transcript.
It is our good fortune that you chose to apply to Northwestern, and I look forward to welcoming you to campus next fall. The years you spend here will be among the most memorable of your life.
Sincerely,
Christopher Watson
Dean of Undergraduate Admission"
Waitlisted. I’ve been talking to a lot of kids who’ve been either accepted or were on track to being accepted to (receiving likely letters and such) VERY good schools who were waitlisted or rejected at Northwestern. I believe a large part of this is they’re playing the yield game, but there are some other things that are going on too that are just beyond the control of any applicant, no matter how strong his/her application.
^^Not saying I’m on track to get into these schools, but just to comfort and give hope to some of you
Edit: Never mind. Sorry. You really GOT me, so I’ll shut up now
@nostalgicwisdom makes sense … hey, I don’t know where I found the 53% yield, but I swear it was for RD applicants … but, you’re absolutely right if not. Are you sure 53% yield is total? Either way … 8% is a sobering statistic and probably still qualifies as a crapshoot. Assuming an applicant clears all the hurdles of being an uber-competitive candidate, odds are still really, really low RD. No guarantees ED, but odds are so much better.
@nostalgicwisdom I just looked at Northwestern’s common data set from a couple years ago & you’re right … the RD yield is around 30%. Not sure where I got the idea the 53% yield was for RD. Nice catch. 8% odds are still pretty crap-shooty … but not quite as bad as I thought. Wish I applied ED … but happy with my other choices.
@kgsnow I was accepted to Bienen for flute performance and Weinberg for environmental studies!
I’m an international students who was accepted into the school of arts and sciences. I would love to connect with other accepted students as well. Congratulations to you all!
Decision result can only see@ portal? Did they send any accept/reject letter thru email?
@GreaserGyal I hope you attend so we can meet!!
@denydenzig I think that’s very rude and nasty of you to demean her accomplishments and tell her “You were just lucky” , clearly she has some characteristic, some trait, and some huge accomplishments that shined through her essays, ec’s , etc. She DESERVED it, and was more than “just lucky”. Humble yourself.
@blackgirlmagic I was not having this conversation with you, but since you choose to insert yourself into it, the poster I was conversing with showed a complete lack of empathy towards a parent of a rejected child going as far as mocking that posters anguish about why that well deserving child did not get in. There are many many many “deserving students” who equally deserved to be in that class who did not get in. This idea that somebody who got in deserved it but somebody who didn’t get in somehow did not deserve it as much or somehow wrote essays in which their love for NU did not shine through is just plain silly and insulting to all the people who got rejected. So please humble yourself too and get rid of this notion that you get into an elite school based on “your merits and accomplishments”. Given another reader on another day any students acceptance could turn into denial.
The ultimate humility is to recognize that the ones that made it in were just lucky in the application game
@soulpup yes, the yield is 53% total. On the applying tab of https://bigfuture.collegeboard.org/college-university-search/northwestern-university, you can see Total applicants, total admitted, and total enrolled. The yield is 53%. The regular applicants doesn’t mean “RD” it means all first year applicants, in contrast to transfer applicants.
You can see NU’s historical yield here: http://www.adminplan.northwestern.edu/ir/data-book/v48/2.01-undergraduate-admissions-statistics.pdf Last year it was 48.3%.
To determine the RD yield for this year’s freshman class (Class of 2020):
https://dailynorthwestern.com/2015/12/15/campus/northwestern-fills-more-than-50-percent-of-the-class-of-2020-through-early-decision/ (3022 ED applicants, 1061 admitted, let’s say all 1061 accept since ED is binding)
RD applications = 35100-3022 ED applications = 32078 RD applications
RD admits = 3743-1061 ED admits = 2682 RD admits
RD acceptance rate = 8.36%
RD number enrolling= 1985 total enrollees - 1061 ED enrollees = 924 RD enrolled students
RD yield = 924/2682 RD admits = 34.4%
The RD yield may seem low, but it’s actually one of the highest in the country and comparable to U’Penn, Dartmouth, Brown, etc.
But your point still holds that the ED acceptance rate is considerably higher than RD.
Let me say something after observing RD results for the last couple of years (obviously just a sample that gets posted here).
With 8% acceptance rate, it is extremely hard for everyone. But if I feel that Northwestern RD is particularly hard for anyone without hook and who does not increase diversity of the class along some dimension. Unlike some other schools, Northwestern does consider legacy in RD. Then, it is trying to get more minority students, Pell grant awardees, first generation students, and so on. On top of that, certain applicants increase geographical diversity (underrepresented countries/states). Some applicants are in majors where they have very few applicants.
If you do not belong to any of these classes, I feel that it is almost impossible to get in Northwestern RD. Going back to one of the parent here, I feel that an Asian from Chicago suburbs applying for pre-med is facing an impossible battle for RD slots. With the same stats, they would have walked in easily in ED.
@nostalgicwisdom Hi. Thank you so much for the information. Do you happen to know the amount of students who were admitted from the waitlist in the past years? Thanks in advance.
@denydenzig I already have realized that you completely misunderstand my point of view, which is just reinforced by you claiming that I have a complete lack of empathy.
I realize that my initial post was somewhat in error, and I have come to the conclusion that not only should people not complain because they “deserved” to get in, but I should also realize that “deserving” was not a factor for me either. Of course I came to this realization on my own, thank you very much, due to…well. I appreciate @blackgirlmagic’s response, but I would just like to drop the topic at this point.
I finally realized that the 2016 acceptance rate of 10.7% for NU was regular and ed combined!
I used to think that was the regular acceptance rate.
