General Comments:

Decision: Accepted, School of Communication

Objective:[ul]
[] SAT I (breakdown): N/A, did not submit
[] ACT: 33; English 35, Reading 35, Science 32, Math 31, Writing 10
[] SAT II: N/A, did not submit
[] Unweighted GPA (out of 4.0): 3.9ish

[] AP (place score in parenthesis): Macro (5), Micro (5), Psychology (5), English Language (5), English Literature (TBD), Calculus AB (TBD), World History (TBD), US Government (TBD)
[] IB (place score in parenthesis): N/A
[] Senior Year Course Load: AP Calc AB, AP US Government, World Affairs/Aquaculture (semester courses), AP English Literature, AP World History, Weight Training
[li] Major Awards (USAMO, Intel etc.): AP Scholar[/li][/ul]

Subjective:[ul]
[] Extracurriculars (place leadership in parenthesis): Model United Nations (no official leadership, but placed 1st in Harvard Conference & Outstanding in Brown conference, along with winning many others); Thespian Society (served as President this year, Secretary last year; honor bar thespian with over 600 cumulative hours; competed at District and State levels, earning Superiors; received various school-based awards for my work; been a crucial member in several One Act competition wins); Musicals (served as a lead in 3 out of 4 years including this year, major character for the other year); Founding member our school’s Film Club (written/directed/edited/acted in several short films; also serve as the club’s secretary); Bridges program (exchange system between our school and the Koc school of Istanbul, Turkey; I have both traveled there for a week and hosted two Turkish students for two weeks); Student Government (Upper School Treasurer this year, Junior Class Representative last year, helped stage successful prom); Mock Trial (served as the lead lawyer, placed 2nd overall in the district competition; did not participate this year due to conflicts, but did mentor the team’s new lead lawyer who went on to win the Best Defense Attorney award); National English Honor Society (serve as President, planned and executed for a school-wide Poetry Week)
[] Job/Work Experience: Acted as the titular character in a professional community production of Romeo & Juliet, which involved 4 months of rehearsals and then a 3 week run of the show. Also have recently been hired as the Lead Writer for a new theme park based website; both of the published articles I have thus far written have been featured and syndicated by Screamscape.com, the industry’s leading site. Other duties include administrating the forum and managing/creating video content. This is a paid position.
[] Volunteer/Community service: About 120 hours of community service, with work ranging from coastal cleanups to acting in a community haunt to restoring a Southwest Florida Historical Society facility.
[] Summer Activities: Not a lot of $$ for summer activities, but did attend a week-long course with the New York Film Academy in Orlando on directing.
[] Essays: Excellent. My common app essay focused on how Mark Twain’s The Mysterious Stranger impacted my religious views. My extracurricular essay involved the evolution of my theater work. My “Why Northwestern Essay” honed in on my love of filmmaking and why I feel Northwestern’s School of Communication would allow me to explore that passion.
[] Teacher Recommendation: Strong. One from my AP English teacher who also heads the NEHS (which I am president of) and thinks I am a brilliant writer. Another from my Social Sciences (both economics courses and one history) teacher who also heads the Bridges program. Final one from my drama teacher/director who has supervised my artistic endeavors since middle school.
[] Counselor Rec: Also excellent. We are very close and she thinks highly of me.
[] Additional Rec: N/A
[li] Interview: Did not interview[/li][/ul]

Other
[] State (if domestic applicant): Florida
[] Country (if international applicant): USA
[] School Type: Private, very rigorous
[] Ethnicity: White
[] Gender: Male
[]Income Bracket: Upper Middle Class
[] Hooks (URM, first generation college, etc.): None
Reflection

[ul]
[] Strengths: ACT, sheer amount & quality of extracurriculars, essays, and recommendations in addition to strong grades
[] Weaknesses: Being a white male, no interview/campus visit/college fair visit, already an accepted white male applicant from my school from the Early Decision round, several other top candidate applicants from my school
[] Why you think you were accepted/waitlisted/rejected: Most likely due to my strengths. The other factor to consider is the top contender applicants from my school all applied to the College of Arts & Sciences while I went for Communication… I think this might’ve saved me. Despite my lack of visitation, my passion/faith in Northwestern’s film major came off very well in my essay.
[li] Where else were you accepted/waitlisted/rejected: Northeastern Honors (accepted), Drexel Honors (accepted), Boston University (accepted), University of Miami Honors (accepted), University of Southern California Dornsife (accepted)/USC Film (rejected), American University Honors (accepted), Harvard (TBD), Emory (TBD), Columbia ED (deferred)[/li][/ul]

General Comments: Honestly very surprised I was accepted due to the amount of quality applicants from my school who have slightly higher stats than I do. As I noted before, I think going for Communication saved me - in addition to the ED acceptance, one other applicant from my school was accepted (a Russian female) to Arts & Sciences. Regardless of the reasoning, I’m very honored and excited, and if the money allows I’m going to try and make it out to a Wildcat day so I can actually visit the campus. I know they’re stingy with financial aid, but I’m hoping I can get something… while I am upper middle class, I have a sibling in private school with divorced parents. In other words, I have money to pay for a lot of it, but not enough money to pay for all of it.

Decision: Rejected

Objective:[ul]
[] SAT I (breakdown): 2190 (690 CR, 760 M, 740 W)
[] ACT: N/A
[] SAT II: 770 US History, 720 Math 2, 610 Lit (Not reported)
[] Unweighted GPA (out of 4.0): 3.9
[] Rank (percentile if rank is unavailable): My school doesn’t rank, but probably top 10 percent
[] AP (place score in parenthesis): US History (5)
[] IB (place score in parenthesis): N/A
[] Senior Year Course Load: AP Economics (Macro and Micro), AP Art History, AP Statistics, English 12 Honors, Film and American Culture, International and Creative Foods, Gym/Health
[] Major Awards (USAMO, Intel etc.): No major Awards
[/ul]Subjective:[ul]
[] Extracurriculars (place leadership in parenthesis): School District Steering Committee (Student Representative, one of four students in entire high school, 11-12); Teen intern at Radical Parenting (parenting blog from teenage perspective, 10-12); Principal’s Advisory Council (Student Representative, 11-12); REBEL (Reaching Everyone By Exposing Lies, anti-smoking advocacy group, 9); Gesher LeKesher (Jewish Peer Leaders Group, 12); PawPrint (school newspaper, 10-11)
[] Job/Work Experience: None (Unless Radical Parenting internship counts as work experience)
[] Volunteer/Community service: NHS (11-12), Interact Club (10-12); Jewish Community Youth Foundation (Jewish philanthropy organization for teens, 8-12; Youth Advisory Board member 10-12)
[] Summer Activities: Summer college programs at UMass Amherst (2009, not for credit), Michigan (2010, not for credit), and Cornell (2011, for credit)
[] Essays: Wrote about Principal’s Advisory Council for short essay. Long essay was about negative experience at a sleep away camp and how the summer programs I attended enabled me to shed away negative attributes; Why NU essay was well-written, but maybe generic (other concerns listed under “Why you were rejected”)
[] Teacher Recommendation: 11th grade English Honors teacher, and Calculus teacher (11th grade); Both were probably positive and well written, yet my English Honors teacher writes numerous recommendations
[] Counselor Rec: My guidance counselor and I are very close, so it was likely an exuberant letter
[] Additional Rec: Vice Principal of my school (he enabled me to get involved in many of my ECs), as well as the head of the charity that runs Jewish Community Youth Foundation; Both of them amazing, sentimental, and pretty well-written
[] Interview: None
[/ul]

Other[ul]
[] State (if domestic applicant):NJ
[] Country (if international applicant):
[] School Type: Public, very competitive
[] Ethnicity:White (Jewish)
[] Gender: Female
[]Income Bracket: $250K+
[li] Hooks (URM, first generation college, etc.): None, unless being from NJ is an anomaly[/li][/ul]

Reflection[ul]
[] Strengths: ECs, Quantitative stats were in range
[] Weaknesses: Essays, overall profile, and possibly the other schools I applied to
[] Why you think you were accepted/waitlisted/rejected: In my essay, I mentioned how much I loved small classes, and used the summer program at Cornell as an example. Problem is, I actually used the name “Cornell.” Even in a neutral manner, this may have hindered me exponentially
[] Where else were you accepted/waitlisted/rejected: Accepted: Pittsburgh, Minnesota (Twin-Cities), UMass Amherst (all honors, $40K from Pitt and UMass, $37K from Minnesota); Deferred (and still waiting): Cornell (ED), Michigan; Waiting on: Columbia, UPenn, Stanford, NYU
[/ul]

General Comments: This was my first rejection and it was quite sobering after my three acceptances. However, because NU did not correspond with me incessantly, I took the rejection much lighter than I was anticipating (out of sight, out of mind, perhaps?). Congrats to all who were accepted and best of luck in your future endeavors! =)

Decision: Accepted to the Robert R. McCormick School of Engineering and Applied Science

Objective:[ul]
[] SAT I: 2210 (740CR, 800M, 670W)
[] ACT: 34 (36E, 36M, 30R, 32S, 30E+W)
[] SAT II: 790MII, 770MI, 710Phys
[] Unweighted GPA: 3.923/4.000
[] Rank: 19/375
[] AP: 3 on World History as a freshman
[] IB: None yet, but testing in six subjects this year as an IB Diploma candidate
[] Senior Year Course Load: IB English HL, IB History HL, IB Physics SL, IB Mathematics SL, IB Spanish SL, IB Art HL, Orchestra

[] Volunteer/Community service: Math tutoring; lots of other volunteer work and community service through NHS, Youth Group, and Boy Scouts
[] Summer Activities: Mission trips to New Orleans, Appalachia, Detroit, and Green Bay; Camp counselor
[] Essays: Pretty strong and well written, albeit last minute
[] Teacher Recommendation: Never saw, but I had two teachers who really like me write them
[] Counselor Recommendation: Not sure either, but I think my counselor likes me a lot too
[] Additional Recommendation: None
[] Interview: None
[/ul]Other:[ul]
[] Location: South Bend, Indiana
[] School Type: Public magnet school
[] Ethnicity: White
[] Gender: Male
[] Income Bracket: $90,000-$120,000
[] Hooks: None
[/ul]Reflection:[ul]
[] Strengths: Test scores, extracurriculars, essays
[] Weaknesses: Freshman year grades, class rank, white male
[] Why I think I was accepted: Well-rounded application
[] Other places I applied: Accepted early at Notre Dame and the honors college at Indiana, waitlisted at Wash U, still waiting to hear back from Carnegie Mellon
[/ul]General Comments: I was down on my odds after being waitlisted at Wash U, so I was very happy to see I was accepted. I’m basically just deciding between Northwestern and Notre Dame now. I really like both, but I am leaning towards Northwestern because I kind of want to get away from home (my dad teaches at ND and I live within walking distance of campus).

[] Strengths:GPA, EC’s, Test scores
[] Weaknesses:Northwestern Essay, No major awards besides NM.
[] Why you think you were accepted/waitlisted/rejected:I think it was because my Why Northwestern essay was really generic and I didn’t spend very much time on it. I’m really not sure otherwise. Hooks: First generation and URM

Reflection
Strengths: Great Hooks, as well as EC’s and essays that were actually relevant to real life experiences
Weaknesses: Test scores
Why you think you were accepted/waitlisted/rejected: Honestly, I just applied for kicks. I had no idea that I could ever get into NU, especially since I thought my stuff was a little lacking! I’m so excited!!!
Where else were you accepted/waitlisted/rejected: Accepted to OSU, Case Western, Waitlisted from UChicago, still waiting on Duke and Cornell.

General Comments: If you put your mind to it, anything can happen, just look at me! The one thing I hope for is a lot of scholarship money. Even though we’re moderately wealthy, I still hope to qualify for some URM scholarships (does NU offer those? I actually haven’t done much research into the school).

[] Job/Work Experience: Work 25 hr/week at my parents’ business as receptionist during the school year, 60 hrs/week during the summer
[] Volunteer/Community service: volunteering with NHS, didn’t have a significant number of hours like many of you, free tutoring (all subjects, SAT/ACT prep for juniors)
[] Summer Activities: Working! And making my way through a list of 1000 books to read before you die.
[] Essays: My Common App essay was about skepticism and it is by far my favorite thing I’ve ever written. My NU supplement was a little iffy by my standard, I wrote it a couple of days before submitting. If you’d like to read it (future applicants), feel free to PM me!
[] Teacher Recommendation: Really good! I didn’t get to read them until after I submitted, but the one my Spanish teacher (and RAK Club advisor) wrote was beautiful. My APUSH teacher (and NHS advisor) wrote the other, basically said I was the best student he’s had (pshh yeah right), not quite as good as the other.
[] Counselor Rec: Didn’t get to see it, but I don’t really know her all too well. At my school there’s generally very little interaction between the guidance counselors and the students. I’m assuming it was rather typical and cliche.

[/ul]Reflection[ul]
[] Strengths: Essays, Recommendations, Grades
[] Weaknesses: “the Asian anti-hook” the fact that there is nothing exceptional in my application as one poster once told me
[] Why you think you were accepted/waitlisted/rejected: I have no clue… I thought that maybe my extracurriculars were a little too scattered (no specific passion/interest), but I guess they saw something in me that they thought would fit with their student body!
[] Where else were you accepted/waitlisted/rejected: Went 6/6 (SO HAPPY about that!), Stanford, Brown, URochester, University of San Diego, UNR (state school, safety)

[/ul]General Comments: I’m so grateful for the acceptance, but I’m pretty positive that I will be declining NU’s offer of admission and attending Stanford instead. I hope that my spot will be given to a deserving applicant on the waitlist. Good luck.
