Official NYU 2012 Transfer Thread

@transfernewyork Supposedly it works on a “rolling basis”, so the earlier you applied, the earlier you find out. However, I feel it really depends what school you applied to. I’m assuming for the “tougher” schools such as CAS (getting the most transfer applicants), Stern, Gallatin, if you had very strong credentials you are already finding out. Then they wait to who responds to their acceptances, and then they decide on the rest of their applicants. Again I’m not sure lol, this is just my theory.

@hsclassof2011.

I was speaking to admissions and that is what they told me as well. From the people who have been given acceptances it seems like they have really impressive applications so it looks like thats the case. It also depends on how many freshman accept their offer. If lesser freshman (class of 2016) accept then more transfer applicants with accepted.

@ everyone else.

Any decisions today :p

Hmm, logic would lead me to assume it is because their applications were more impressive. It’s a little unnerving.

@hsclassof2011
oh thanks, yea that’s the similar conclusion I came to. I’ve read last years thread and this one and it seems some of the most impressive applicants didn’t get in and some of the more so-so ones did. It seems that their admissions process really does consider the entire student rather than just their stats.

@transfernewyork Yeah that is what I’m hoping for, not to jinx it or anything lol. I had really poor high school grades, but have improved since as a freshman in college. Then again I am applying for Steinhardt for MCC, got rejected last year for Political Science at CAS so I’m hoping for the best.

I had poor hs grades as well. Although, about half of them were ll honors courses until I switched schools. My college grades are much better and my essays was pretty well edited. What is the difference between CAS and Steinhardt, I didn’t look at any other school besides CAS?
This thread has made me more anxious than I was before when I hardly considered the outcome. What was you hs gpa? (if you don’t want to post np)

As for my stats, my HS GPA was 3.96 and my college GPA was 3.94, both unweighted. I took two AP classes in HS (Spanish and English, both 4’s). I finished 36 credits at my old college, many of which were 300 and 200 level classes. I’m sending in 4 excellent letters of recommendation (3 professors, and my boss), I’m employed full-time and have been for 8 months now, I’m fluent in 3 languages and I have a working knowledge in an additional 2, and I’m an underrepresented minority with an EFC of $0.

If I get in, financial aid will determine whether I attend since I can’t and I’m not willing to take too much in loans. I’m aiming for a total of $30k-40k max after graduating. Being able to afford NYU (like if I got a full scholarship) would be a dream come true … the idea of living in Manhattan is spectacular, and the breadth of their academic programs is amazing. :D

@transfernewyork Steinhardt offers programs for communications (what I’m going for), psychology, education, nutrition, and music. Supposedly Steinhardt is an “easier” school to get into, compared to the other schools NYU offers. But, I really was attracted to their Media, Culture, and Communication program lol!

There were my stats (copy and pasted):
Female, South Asian (Indian)
Financial Aid not needed
Attended a science, engineering track school in south texas (literally 10 mins away from Mexico), with a very competitive class
Poor rank, gpa (I actually don’t even know my final rank and gpa an don’t want to know lol)
First semester college GPA: 3.8
Second semester: hoping for a 4.0 if all pans out well
In high school I was President of Environmental Club, I was a Student Ambassador, Historian of Pan American Student Forum, I was also apart of a volunteer program called Teen Court where we provided restitution for minors who had minor felonies
I play the indian classical instrument the harmonium, and am a trained classical indian singer and perform at local hindu events
Before my freshman year of college I interned with a local hospital in the public relations department.
Currently I am a member of Alpha Lamda Delta, National Society of Collegiate Scholars, Pre-Law Society, Political Science Association
I also work at Barnes and Noble 20 hours a week
Excellent rec
I think I had pretty well-written essays, but I’m biased lol
Applied last year got rejected for political science at cas, reapplying this year at steinhardt for media, culture, and communication for a fall sophomore
Did not submit SAT scores.
Also speak two other languages besides english: telugu my mother tongue, and hindi

@Yuxuan You should really stick to 1 - 2 recommendation letters…

@hsclassof2011
You didnt submit your test scores? I spoke to an admissions officer and they said if you hadnt completed 30 hours (seen on final transcripts) by the time you send in your application you needed to send your scores. Did they say your application is complete?

I am also applying to MCC!

@Hopeful2121 By now if they needed my test scores they would have e-mailed me. That being said, I called several times to verify whether they needed my test scores, and they said it was not needed since by the time my application was complete I would have finished the year with 32 hours. One, student ambassador (I believe) told me that Steinhardt didn’t even look at test scores, and if they were sent it they would be disregarded.

Awesome! What do your stats look like?

@everyone else, it would be helpful if anyone would be willing to chance me, please!

tranafer credits show up for anyone?

No transfer credits yet.

Wow, everyone that just posted their stats are really impressive. The college application process has changed so much in the matter of a couple years. People should be elected with these kind of stats but now it barely lets one feel secure about getting into college.

Well done!

@hsclassof2011
Oh, your chances of getting in seem very likely from everything I’ve read. However, there was a person from last year’s thread that had an impressive resume and got rejected. It seems like NYU really looks at backgrounds so if you are well rounded (which it seem like you are) with impressive stats, you have a good chance.

@hsclassof2011
Thanks for your imformation! I hope you are right and the decisions won’t be that late like last year! Hope stern could give out decisions sooner, I think only one person in this forum has heard back from stern… The long wait is so annoying!lol~~~

@hsclassof2011

I don’t think it’s rolling admissions. Earlier someone posted that they sent the application in the night of April 1st and then were accepted on April 19th. :</p>

Good luck to everyone who is still waiting!

Some people have referred to someone with really impressive stats who was rejected last year. I know her. She applied for a super competitive major that NYU really does not accept transfers for, and she applied as a Sophomore and I’m pretty sure they only take Juniors and Seniors into the major. Don’t let her discourage you!

PS. She and I are both applying to NYU this year. I have significantly less impressive stats than her, but fingers crossed I’ll get in!

That was me and now I feel a lot better. What was the major? DO you know if economics is competitive?

@hsclass2011
Im transferring from fordham
I had mediocre grades in high school due to a sudden tragedy that made it extremely hard to keep up. But i have been improving and mentioned that in additional info.
I have an rec from an alumni
Ecs:
internship at cnn, internship at public relations firm, internship at magazine and contributing writer for newspaper. I also worked retail and at a restaurant. Good luck!!!

It seems that very few people received decisions this week. Probably most of us should expect to receive the decision throughout the May.
I remember that Stern offers waitlist to some applicants last year, I am not sure that is still offered this year. What do you guys think?
Also, AO says the standardized test is not an important factor if you are a rising junior.
