Decision: Accepted to ArtSci!!

Objective:
- ACT: 35-11
- SAT II: 800 Chem/Math II, 790 US History
- Unweighted GPA (out of 4.0): 4.00
- Rank (percentile if rank is unavailable): N/A
- AP (place score in parenthesis): 5s on World History, US History, Eng Lang, Chem, Calc BC, US Gov
- Senior Year Course Load: AP Lit/Physics B/Stat/Euro/Econ, Honors Japanese and Newspaper
- Major Awards (USAMO, Intel etc.): Idk where to put this but State Champion Impromptu Speaker (Michigan Forensics), won a Japan America Friendship Scholars (JAFS) scholarship to do a foreign exchange in Japan

Subjective:
- Extracurriculars/Volunteer/Community service (place leadership in parenthesis):
-Forensics (Captain), State Champ in Impromptu speaking
-Summer Scholar at Wash U last summer, got A’s in Intro to Climate Change and Music History (This was probably a big factor)
-Exchange Student to Japan (Summer between Sophomore and Junior years), done some volunteer work with the exchange organization afterwards
-FIRST FRC, Team ranked #88 at 2012 Worlds
-Temple Youth Board President
-Internship with an Actuary, continuing since summer before senior year
-Newspaper Editoralist
-Quizbowl Captain/NHS/other minor stuff - Job/Work Experience: See above internship
- Essays: Common App 9/10- About my exchange to Japan, but I focused it more on what I learned upon coming back home, so I thought I took a unique spin on a common-ish story
- Teacher Recommendations: Accidentally sent three, my Chem teacher’s was terrible (quoted my resume verbatim), other two were unread but probably very powerful
- Counselor Rec: no idea, probably a 7-8/10

Other
- Applied for Financial Aid?: Yes
- Intended Major: Applied Math iirc
- State (if domestic applicant): MI
- School Type: Competitive Public, usually gets 5-8 Wash U acceptance yearly
- Ethnicity: White
- Gender: Male
- Income Bracket: No thanks, but in the ballpark for money
- Hooks (URM, first generation college, etc.): Spent last summer there as a Summer Scholar and got As in two courses, I’m sure that was a big stand out on my app

Reflection
- Strengths: Pretty impeccable stats, solid everything else, and dropping seven grand on a summer program there shot my demonstrated interest up to the moon
- Weaknesses:
- Why you think you were accepted/waitlisted/rejected: Numbers and activities were well above average, and the summer program put me over the edge
Where else you are applying or have already applied: Rejected Stanford EA, Accepted University of Michigan, Likely Letter at Emory, waiting on Princeton/Harvard/Wharton/Duke/Northwestern

A few pieces of advice:
-Keep your expectations realistic, but still hope for the best and work your ass off to try and get there
-Paying a few thousand bucks for a summer program worked for me at Wash U, if you’re super interested in an equivalent place (Vandy, Northwestern, Duke, etc.) and have the money, I think summer programs can tip the odds in your favor
-For better or worse, college applications are one giant game, so play it to the best of your ability. Hedge your odds, throw in a few random places, and always make sure you have your backups. Once you’ve done all that you can, try to remain humble and positive, and know that things typically tend to work out for the best.
-Not that you can generalize from one example, but there are a few upper middle class white boys who still can get accepted for being well rounded. Sure, being hyperfocusd seems to be an advantage nowadays, but there are still spots for traditional “smart” kids lacking mind-blowing credentials

Hope I didn’t come across as too much of an ass (lol at anyone who knows me irl and is reading this because you know its me), congrats to all who were accepted and best of luck to those still waiting! Hope my app provided a little insight into a truly messed up process.
