Official Rice Class of 2013 General Discussion Thread

Didn’t she make her own thread already? race64, your chance post would probably be more appropriate as its own thread. I think you’ve already made one, but you should definitely apply. If you love a school apply and see what happens, chance threads are basically useless.

describe yourself in 1 one word and post 3 of favorite hobby:
example: racer64- shy, swim, shopping, and basketball

I heard from RD people received something in the mail about bed sheets… did anyone from ED receive these mails? Cause I haven’t…

And your point is? Amazingly enough, thousands of applicants when writing their college essays use the same cliche topics (community service, how the death of a loved one affected them, going abroad, etc.) but the thing is HOW you write it makes all the difference. And especially on supplements that have a required topic (that is, you cannot choose your own topic), applicants must make themselves stand out in their writing through style and creativity and so forth.

I’ve heard of this table topic too–but please don’t think you are automatically discounted because of using a very common (or not so common) topic. It’s all about how you write it and how it affected you as conveyed to the admissions officer that makes all the difference. ;)

^ i think he was just saying that this particular person had already posted a chance thread somewhere.

:) Does anyone know what the dorm comes with besides desk and beds? Are there cupboards? Do we need to bring our own printer and lamps?
Thanks all!

hotasice, I totally agree with you. I wrote about my mission trip to Africa and apparently I did it in a way that pleased the adcoms because I got in.

I’ve actually read an essay about a table that sounded very similar to the topic that race64 is planning on writing. I just find that odd. Personally, I dont care what he (or she) writes.

Ahh, it still makes me so happy to see you post on the Rice forum. =]

If I remember correctly, my hosts had their own desk lamps. I think they lit their room with the light on the ceiling and various Christmas lights, which was really cool BTW. You don’t NEED a printer (you can go elsewhere at Rice to print but it would cost money), however I personally would buy one for convenience.

they don’t have free printers? :(

No but there’s free laundry. (That’s still true, right?)

Haha there are printers you can use but it’s really cheap, like 10 or 30 cents per page? Imagine if you could print paper for free… yeah, that is hugely expensive given the thousands of students.

It’s just a lot more convenient to use library or college printers because you don’t have to constantly worry about restocking your paper or printer cartridges. They have an online tracking system that lets you know how much paper you’ve printed and how much you will be charged.

Yes, laundry is free.

But we buy our own detergent right?

This page should help. It describes the furnishings.

After I send in my deposit, is there anything else I need to do? Or do materials come in the mail?

That’s good to hear… though the $ does add up once you have to start writing reports that are like 20 pages long.

This is sort of off-topic, but I think everyone should know that Modulation is really awesome and gave me really helpful advice that convinced my parents to let mem become an Owl! Thank you again! :] See you around next year!
Actually lol all of you current/future Owls are really helpful; thank you! I don’t know how I will be able to repay you all XP

I agree Modulation is really awesome! Though Modulation stopped replying to my emails (grr) lol

Some colleges have free printers that they bought. Im pretty sure i saw a few free printers in the basement at Sid. Just depends what each college spends their money on.

And I’m sure it’s not 30 cents a page! Even with all the printing my Dd did, it did not cost very much!

Thanks, christinewong!! You give me too much credit… =]

Hahaha, sorry, I got lazy…
