I also was accepted today, and I’m super excited about it! The only thing I’m worried about is the housing situation… I’m hesitant about starting at a new school and living off campus. does anyone know of a way to find roommates for off-campus housing? And will there be a Facebook group for the transfer class?

Hey @liquid colors and @rtad93 or anyone who received aid package

I was wondering if you submitted the ccs profile and idoc packet in addition to fafsa when you received your aid packet?

Or did you receive a packet solely based on the fafsa info?

ACCEPTED

I initially applied to Rice during high school, but I guess being an international asking for a lot of aid kind of is the best anti-hook ever. This year (my sophomore year), I had the fortune of receiving a Green Card, so I applied again!

So here are some of my basic stats for next year transfers who are lurking around this thread (hello 2014!)!

College/Major Applying to: Chemical Engineering
Entering as: Junior
HS GPA: 4.0
College GPA: 4.0
SAT II: Math II-800; BioM-770
Extracurriculars: President of an honor society, Webmaster for 3 organizations, Co-founded this clothing line (failed), Research with small grant, mentoring stuff, and volunteering.
Letters of Recommendation: 2 from college professors (ChemE and math)

Comment: I’m still speechless. During high school, I applied to 13 schools and got wait-listed at 9 of them (Harvard, Brown, not Rice… etc.) and rejected at rest. But hey, at least I got into my safety which is only 5 blocks away from my house! Anyway, I prepared a lot since my freshman year. 23, 21, 18, and 17 are the number of hours that I have taken each semester as a chemical engineering major, and including AP credits and concurrent college course credits from high school, I have accumulated over 120 credit hours here. I just tried to show that academic rigor is not an obstacle for me, and at the same time, I showed that I still had the capacity to find what I’m passionate about - like research. Rice was the first school to release the decisions from the ones that I applied to, so I’m still looking forward to finding out about other decisions as well. It’s been a surreal day.

Hey @transva12, sorry this reply is a bit late!

Personally, I submitted CSS and, I believe, IDOC along with my FASFA.

And congratulations to all those accepted!

Thanks @liquidcolors I was worried that something went wrong for for my financial aid but nope just need to submit those components.

@Iwilltransfer13 what university do you currently attend? Also what was your sat score?

@transva12 I only submitted an ACT score with 33 and I currently attend a state school not even in the 100th place in usnews. also, I had idoc, css, and fafsa all in when i received my aid package.

What are everyone’s majors here?

I’m a religion major, but it looks like I’m going to have a lot of friends studying engineering :p

No I’m actually interested in doing history but I’m not certain yet. Hey @liquidcolors what didn’t you like about Amherst college?

Ah, never an easy question @transva. At the most basic level, I can’t stand the social life. Not only do I not “fit” with the typical Amherst student (generally very WASPy), bu there aren’t a lot of sub cultures that exist on campus. On top of that, it’s nearly impossible to find weekend activities that don’t involve drinking. I don’t mind the drinking itself, just the lack of alternatives. The student body is, of course, intelligent, but I’ve found that most students are very apathetic about, well, almost everything.

Also, for such a small college, our student body is very dichotomous. Split between athletes and non-athletes, wealthy students and less well off students, etc.

Of course, the academics are great, I’ll miss them the most, and the student body is generally very nice. It just isn’t a good fit for me.

Yeah I actually applied to AC out of high school although I’d never seen it or for the fact any liberal arts school. But I had a chance to visit FMC in PA and get a taste of the liberal arts college and quite honestly I was pretty disappointed. The consensus among students that I spoke to was that the professors and all were terrific(very intimate relationships) by the social scene was too constricting. One person told me he basically knew everyone at the school, though not personally but by face, and it was reminiscent of high school.

Luckily rice will be small and quaint but there will always be new people to meet and awesome things to do on the weekends.

Just curious. Have you guys accepted the offer or are you guys waiting to hear back from other schools before accepting (or not)?

I’m waiting to hear from U Chicago. If they reject me, there’s a very good chance that I’ll accept Rice’s offer; if they accept me, there’s still a good chance that I’ll accept Rice’s offer.

And, yeah, @transva, I imagine the size of Rice is just about perfect. Large enough to continually meet new people but small enough to see friends and others you recognize fairly regularly.

Yes I’m waiting for a few others as well. What date do the other schools you all applied release decisions?

@LiquidColors haha, yeah I’ve been reading more in-depth about Rice now, and I’m thinking it’s just as good as other schools that I’m applying. I have visited both rice and uchicago before, and for me (as an engineering major) rice would definitely be a better choice haha.

@transva12 cornell is probably going to be my latest… i think for engineering, they release decisions from late may to early june, which is kind of strange. but other than that, all others will arrive on or before 15th (fingers crossed)

After snooping around the internet, I realized that rice’s transfer experience is not as good as some of the other universities in equal caliber, relatively speaking of course. I’m kind of worried that I won’t get housing first semester… im a junior transfer, but i’m thinking about just taking 3 year rather than 2 years for graduation to get more out of rice.

@IWill, I’ve actually read the opposite, that transfer students at Rice feel like they fit in as well as students that came in as Freshmen. Who knows, I’ll continue Googling.

And good luck with Cornell (and the rest)! Looking at your stats, I think you’re good.

Okay so I just found this thread so I’m a little late on the bandwagon…

I’ve been accepted as an incoming sophomore. Sorta typical application stats:
Race: Asian, 2240 SAT, Rank 1 senior class, 4.0 HS GPA, 3.62 college GPA
Thank god first year transfers are considered more based on their high school record…

I guess the thing that set me apart was being a fairly accomplished classical violinist. All my EC’s were basically music-oriented, aka nothing special. I did a live audition at the Shepherd School of Music, so I guess they were more focused on my musical potential than my academic prowess.

A note on transfer housing: I was told that many transfers are offered on-campus housing in late July, so if you’re willing to wait that long, you may be a very happy camper.

Accepted a while ago; anyone from Houston?

Hey Guys! I am also an admitted transfer student for the fall. Super excited! I’ve been following this blog but didn’t get involved.

I am an out of state, from MD, and was wondering if any male admits wanted to consider moving into an apartment together? I know we aren’t guaranteed housing but I’d still love to room with someone from Rice, even if its off campus.

Email me at this pseudo address (so future viewers of the blog dont spam) and we’ll correspond from there! biopeer @ email . com

Anyone got waitlist still waiting here?

Really? No one here got off waitlist of Rice?
