As a Silliman freshman, since we're being renovated this year, you'll be living in Swing Space. Swing is located on Grove St. right next to Payne Whitney gym. It's newish, so think more like a hotel than your classic res college. You will be in a 4 person suite on either the 2nd or 3rd floor. You will have a kitchenette and a bathroom, both of which you'll be responsible for cleaning yourself (I know, I'm terrified). The bedrooms are a decent size but the common rooms are kind of small. We do have AIR CONDITIONING which is the greatest thing ever during the first month or so of school. Seriously.

Silliman, in my opinion (and that of many others... although they're mainly in Silliman too), is hands down the best college at Yale. Living in your college all 4 years is awesome. (Don't worry- you'll still meet plenty of people on Old Campus from everything else you're involved in). You will connect with a lot of upperclassmen, which is really helpful. Dean Flick is incredible, and Master K is very willing to help out with anything- we have a lot of funding available for different things (although our master doesn't like to pay for alcohol). We are the Tyng Cup CHAMPIONS.

You will get to spend three years in a newly renovated ($100+ million) Silliman College. Silliman is pretty much the perfect location. Close to Science Hill and places like WLH and SSS, where a lot of classes are held.

So... as much as it kind of sucks to not be in silliman this year, Swing Space is pretty decent, and the renovated college is going to be AMAZING."

This is great!

So describe a 4 person suite in Swing Space. Are they two rooms with two people each? Bunked beds? What do the common rooms have? Do the rooms have any amenities? Are the table, chairs, bureaus nice? Is there a nice view? How many bathrooms each suite?

Oh geez. Tell you the truth, I've never even been in Swing Space.

OH! rooms come furnished. so don't bother bringing furniture. all of the furniture is fairly new. which kind ofsucks for all of us '09, because we bought furniture and don't really have anytihng to do with it (i stored mine in my fraternity basement).

just one bathroom for the suite. bedrooms are two doubles, i think that there's room to debunk the beds if you want. we're thinking about lofting so that we can put desks underneath and have more room.

views... well, you'll either be overlooking the grove st cemetary, PWG, or the courtyard if you're on an inner room.

Yay - silliman!

can everybody loft beds at yale or do only swing space beds loft? ( i guess this is aimed a jimmypop)

The rooms are fairly nice given the typical Sillman Freshman year dorm. First, the bedrooms are big enough to debunk and loft (that was the setup for some of my Trumbull friends this year) which is a huge plus. The rooms (with the exception of a room ending in 02 or 39 which are bigger than a typical suite, but some of those rooms were blocked out for freshmen so you could get lucky) are all the same. You walk in and there is a little hallway leading to the small common room with the kitchenette on one side and a little closet on the other. The kitchenette area is small and if you want to do anything in it you will have to hope no one wants to get in and out because the door cramps your space (this is not a problem in the 02/39 rooms as their layout is slightly different) anyways there is a small common room with three doors leading off the side, one for the bathroom (which has a separate room for the toilet and shower/bathtub) and two for the bedrooms. The beds and desk furniture are great, better than the typical Yale furniture, but the couch and chairs provided aren't great (My own stuff was nicer but I couldn't keep them).

I'm in Silliman!

How are the normal rooms in the college? Is annexing a problem?

I don't think we have to annex anybody. Usually there are enough people who want to live off campus that there are beds for everyone who wants to be in Silliman.

We will never have to annex anyone in Silliman. At least before the renovation there were always more rooms than people in Silliman (my friend switched from her double to a single in 2nd semester because there were extra singles available). They are giving an entire entryway back to Yale (entryway D in case anyone cares) in the renovation but if I remember correctly there will still be as many rooms because they are making better use of the remaining space. Right now the normal rooms in Silliman besides the awful freshman housing (which doesn't matter for the Class of 2010) are generally some of the largest on campus with a lot of stand alone singles and doubles plus triples quads and quints. After the renovation, the room setups are going to be very different, more like those in Pierson or Davenport. Basically as far as I can remember from a meeting a year and a half ago there are going to more suites that house more people like sextets and octets but there are going to be more single bedrooms in the suites. Silliman was pretty good for upperclassmen housing before the renovation, but now the rooms aren't going to be falling apart and there is probably going to be more space.

First, I found a Yale Daily News article on Swing Space for any Sillimanders who are interested:

So is the biggest change going from stand alone rooms/quads to suites with singles?

Also, how are the Master and Dean? Nice? Easygoing? Strict? No kerfuffles like the Branford Master?

How do you know what college you're in already? I haven't heard anything yet.

These extra commodities make me happy :)

rhs06. Go to www.yale.edu/facebook, type in your netID and password. Then, look at the first college that comes up online in the top left corner.

Thanks. It's been saying that the website is down for maintenance the past few days...I hope it's up again soon!
