...when do we know about dorms, residential colleges, email addresses, and all such good stuff? When does the fun begin? :)

I think on the freshman website (the link is posted on another one of the threads on this page) it has this page where it shows important dates in the summer, or something along those lines and it mentions stuff like that. Hope that's helpful.

July!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

They're making us wait far too long...I want to know NOW :)

prays:
Please let me be sorted into a Gothic one...

LOL, I feel your pain Vivaldi. It just wouldn't be Yale for me if I wasn't in one of the Gothic style residential houses...well, okay, maybe it would be just because it's Yale, but I still want a Gothic one!!! crosses fingers

I think I'd even be fine with Davenport, since it's at least half Gothic...:)

(and it's being renovated right now)

Anything but Siliman..

Wouldn't Mind:

Branford
Johnathan Edwards
Calhoun
Berkeley
Trumbull
Saybrook
Pierson
Davenport

Blah:

Silliman (though I could deal)
Timothy Dwight

Um...at least they have A/C:

Morse
Stiles

what's wrong with silliman? or TD?

well, TD frosh don't live on old campus, so maybe it feels a bit isolating? I am not sure. :P

Silliman is the largest college, and architecturally, it's a bit of a hodgepodge. The contrast between the old Vanderbilt Sheffield dormitories and the additions that made it Silliman College are somewhat amusing.

I would not like to live in Silliman, TD, Morse, or Stiles. The rest, I would be fine with. Happy, even, if they are Gothic. ;)

Honestly, Old Campus is highly overrated. You shouldn't prejudge what college you want to be in based on if they're on old campus. i lived in silliman my freshmen year and I loved it. If i could do it all over again, I would have chosen silliman. You get so close with the silliman community and it is indeed a wonderful place to spend 4 years. You also get close to your class as well from the start. I have friends that lived on old campus who didnt meet some people in their college class until junior year.

Plus, Silliman is the largest (we take up an entire city block), meaning that you also have the most resources (and the best courtyard). Silliman is already considered by most to be one of the nicest in terms of the amount of space and variety of facilities (we have a freakin' indoor rock climbing wall to name an example) that the rest of the colleges don't have. And trust me, after renovations, it is going to be the best college on campus. Here's a list of just some of the things that Silliman offers:

the largest dining hall on campus

the largest college common room on campus

INDOOR ROCK CLIMBING WALL

Squash Court

Basketball Court

Dance Studio

one of the largest college libraries

Professional sound recording studio

3 music rehearsal rooms

Kitchen

Buttery

Dark Room
13 Art Room

MOVIE THEATER (when they renovate, they're adding stadium seating)

Art Gallery (the only undergrad art gallery on campus)

The LARGEST college weightroom on campus

game room

I know i'm missing a few...

I have friends who lived on Old Campus, who, after living there, wished they could have lived in their college from the start. You get to know so many upperclassmen from the start, which is a definite plus.

i lived in silliman my freshmen year and I loved it. Trust me on this one, Old Campus is highly overrated. Plus, because silliman is so freakin' big, we offer the most variety of activity spaces than any other college (we have an indoor rock climbing facility). Silliman is already considered by most to be one of the best colleges in terms of the courtyard size and activity spaces. And come renovations in 2006-2007, we are going to be the best.

I even have friends who wanted to switch into silliman from old campus because they liked our dining hall and people so much...so trust me, silliman ain't all that bad.

facility wise, JE, stiles and morse are in the worst shape of all the colleges.

honestly, all the colleges are pretty...well...maybe except for morse and stiles. Both the gothic and the georgian ones are gorgeous, though.

What's wrong with Morse and Stiles? Are they just in bad shape? Uglier? Poorer living conditions? Have they murderers hiding in the shadows? Bad feng shui?

there's nothing wrong with morse and stiles...it's just a little ongoing joke we Yalies have with those two colleges because they kinda of stand out from the rest physically speaking. I have friends in morse and stiles that love it. Every yalie loves their college. To put it simply, you're going to love whatever college ur assigned to. So dont worry about being put in any particular one, whether gothic or georgian, whether on old campus or not, they're all great places to live, work, and play.

honestly, it'll be yale even if it weren't gothic. I lived in silliman, and it was still beautiful. You'll learn that living in a gothic one isn't necessarily great. For example, JE may be gothic but is in poor shape physically. Calhoun is also gothic and won't be getting a full renovation. Both Saybrook and Trumbull are on the busiest street through the campus and I have friends who live on the side facing the street that it is so freakin' loud all day. Of course, the georgian ones have their issues too. EVERY college has their ups and downs and you'll love wherever ur put.

Also, don't forget that only 6 of the 12 colleges are actually "gothic"...so i don't know where you get this idea that Yale = gothic.

Don't forget that only 6 of the 12 colleges are actually "gothic"...so don't think that just because it isn't gothic, that means that it really isn't the real Yale experience.
