@FlyingCrepes! Thank you so much! Ah. I really hope our stories will turn out like yours.

and @Spamford, yep I’m a double legacy. Sigh.

and @Spamford, yep I’m a double legacy. Sigh.

I got deferred last year and was accepted in the RD round. At this point, you maximize your chances by achieving stellar grades through mid year and even into February and March. Also, update Stanford of any new accomplishments and affirm your extreme interest in attending. Last year, I sent an update in like March that highlighted how my grades actually improved after the 1st semester, some new EC achievements, and that Stanford remained my #1 Choice.

May the odds be ever in your favor.

Thank you thank you thank you. Giving us hope. I still <3 you, Stanford.

Deferred here, passed over by a legacy admit. My school rarely has unhooked (not URM/legacy/Athletes) students going to Stanford. Not expecting much from Stanford in April.

Thanks so much to you formerly-deferred Stanfordites for sharing your experiences, and congratulations on your eventual acceptances!

Did you feel you had an obvious gap in your application you had to demonstrate filling prior to March, or that they just needed to see how you stacked up to the RD competition? Since S can’t improve his stats (unless improving your SAT a bit can still help you even with a 35 ACT?), and he can’t get any more hooked or any less white-middle-class-male before March, his opportunities to dazzle them seem a bit limited.

The fact that 15% of the deferred folks from previous years have been admitted seems to reinforce the idea that the REA pool is very competitive relative to the RD pool, so that should give you all even more to feel proud of. Hopefully this year that percentage will be even higher due to your collective awesomeness!

I Got deferred too!
Can’t wait to find out my result!

Shoot… what happens if your senior grades are worse than any of your high school grades …

I figured I would post this just to have it on record for all posterity… We’ve already seen it, but maybe it’ll ease next year’s deferrees’ pain if they’ve read the deferral letter before it comes.

Dear [first name],

After careful consideration and a thorough review of your candidacy, we have deferred your application to our Regular Decision review period. Our philosophy is to defer only a small percentage of Restrictive Early Action applicants, and thus you are part of a highly select group of students whose applications will be reviewed again.

The reasons for deferring a Restrictive Early Action application vary, but in most cases we want to reassess your candidacy in the broader context of our entire applicant pool, or we want to see your first term senior year grades. Although we cannot predict the likelihood of gaining admission, in each of the past four years approximately fifteen percent of deferred candidates have been admitted.

Between now and the end of February, we invite you to submit online an Optional Update Form. Let us know about any new honors, awards or significant personal accomplishments. Do not submit additional letters of recommendation. When first term grades are available, ask your school to submit an updated transcript with the Common Application Midyear Report Form. Include your Stanford ID number, located at the top of this letter, in all correspondence with the admission office.

We appreciate the thoughtfulness and hard work you put into your application and acknowledge your strong interest in Stanford as a Restrictive Early Action applicant. You will receive a final decision at the end of March, 2013.

Sincerely,

smh the stanford optional update form is so vague and pretty ghetto like how much should you really elaborate…

I got deferred, too. I think I’ve figured it out–with each result you get a variation of the exclamation “aw/augh”

Acceptance: “AAAAAAWWWWW YEEEEEAH”
Rejection: “awwwwww…”
Deferral: “AAAAAAAUGH!”

@smoneysoreal, I’m elaborating the **** out of that optional update form. Though, I’m going to talk to my regional admissions officer just to figure out how much is too much.

thanks for advice FlyingCrepes & ThousandMiles.

@AeryGold - Are you going to email your regional admissions officer? Do they really respond?

@Avocet, truthfully, I have no idea if they’ll respond. Though, my regional officer responded to me earlier in the fall. And yes, I emailed mine.

Here’s the page with the contact information:

ah, I see. thanks

@smoneysoreal - sent you a pm.

Feels like a lot more were deferred this year.
More than 15 applied REA from my school (public, large, very good in area. Usually for Stanford we have ~1-2 recruited for sports, and ~2-5 from REA and RD).

So far I know of 3 deferrals (including me), 1 acceptance, and 2 rejections…

Hey guys - would Stanford even accept revised act or sat 1 scores(jan/feb) from deferred candidates? Their rd testing requirement states that all testing should have been completed by the rd app deadline. TIA

@ iman123194, I got the same message about pending sponsorship. My guess is that since we aren’t accepted, we won’t get a sponsor, so our accounts will be deleted. Would we be able to make a new SUNet ID if we get accepted in March?

@spamford, @aerygold- I’m also a legacy (only one generation, though, and no donations so I don’t think it makes much of a difference) and also applied to pomona! Thank you Flyingcrepes and Thousandmiles! 15% is higher than the EA rate and far higher than the RD rate so this should actually be the less scary round (plus if we do get rejected we’ll get some acceptances around the same time, so it won’t be quite as rough). @avocet, @aerygold have you heard back from your regional officer? Did he/she say anything useful about the update form? I’m worried that extensive answers would seem irrelevant and hurt admission chances because not much has changed between last fall and now (same extracurriculars, course schedule etc)

I can’t locate the 2016 scea deferred thread on cc. If someone has that, could you please send the link. TIA

thm - If it does get deleted, we will definitely be able to make a new one. Then again, why would they give us an SUID if they were just going to delete the account?

Anyways, doesn’t it feel like we’ve all been stuck in purgatory? I feel pretty bad about all this…
