well, even when I submitted my app, I knew I didn’t have an amazing chance. I’ve heard that alot of this is luck since everyone that applies is so amazing. I was disappointed, but i realize that God is telling me this school was obviously not for me. Going to such an elite school might have made me miserable really.

Good job for everyone that got accepted, good luck for everyone deferred, and let’s party for everyone that got rejected! now we don’t have to worry about it! woohoo!

Writing (Rate Quality on 1-10 Scale; 10 as Best):[ul]
[] Essays (Include Subjects):[list]
[li] Common App Main: 10 - everyone I showed it to said it was a “dynamite essay” - about how working at my internship making computer applications to save American lives changed my view from wanting money to wanting to help. Had a great leadoff which involved a wounded soldier crying on my shoulder.[/li][] EC Short Answer: 6 - About FCA, focused on a specific event which I organized.
[] Intellectual Vitality: 8/9 - Also from my internship, about how I solved a math / CS problem that the college kids (kids from UVA, CMU, Georgetown and even MIT) couldn’t solve, thanks to my advanced courseload in school.
[] Roommate: 8/9 - Went into depth (SPECIFICS) about the 5 adjectives that describe me.
[] Why Stanford: 7 - Because it is my home (grew up ON Stanford), I love the learning atmosphere (included an example of an interaction with a Stanford student that I had), and is where I had my first kiss =P
[] Other:[/ul]
[] Teacher Recommendation #1: 10 - A math teacher (he’s a PhD) who I had for Precalc and Multivar / other very advanced math course. We talk all the time outside of class and often give eachother math problems to solve. Took a very advanced math course from him that is unique to my school (I didn’t understand a single thing in that course, but it didn’t matter =P ). He loves me, I love him.
[] Teacher Recommendation #2: 6 - My Chinese teacher of four years. She told me “You are the most wonderful student in my class,” but also said that I suck at Chinese. I suppose it’s a redeeming factor that I’m the only white guy taking AP Chinese in the whole school…
[] Counselor Rec: No idea how to rate this. But I think that my counselor likes me. I give her chocolates and send her happy emails and talk to her a lot.
[] Additional Rec: 7/8 - Next door neighbor, my mom’s best friend. We both serve at the same nonprofit every week. She goes to my church. We know eachother very well.

[] State (if domestic applicant): VA
[] Country (if international applicant): USA
[] School Type: Public, basically a magnet, ranked #1 in the country by US News
[] Ethnicity: White
[] Gender: Male
[] Income Bracket: The highest there is…
[] Hooks (URM, first generation college, etc.): Double legacy, have a patent pending on one of my computer applications.[/ul]

Reflection[ul]
[] Strengths: Passion (in computer science), service, familiarity with the school (included references to personal friends who are on the Stanford staff in my essays), personality (I made sure that my essays reflected my voice), great friends with my rec writers, perfect GPA doesn’t hurt, and of course legacy.
[] Weaknesses: Numbers (relatively low SATs), no major awards, only one real club involvement, rich white male, grammatical errors in my Activity sheet…
[] Why you think you were accepted/deferred/rejected: I thought my essays were really good. The key is these three words: VOICE, VOICE, and VOICE. You also have to go into SPECIFICS on your essays! Also, good recs, demonstrated passion, and legacy…
[] What would you have done differently?: Revised my activity sheet one more time. Gotten friends to read my essays and application, and read essays of friends (it really helps your own writing to critique the writing of others). Sent it in even earlier.
[/ul]

**General Comments:
I’m still in shock that I made it. I’ve wanted to go to Stanford my whole life. Obviously I’m very fortunate (i.e. lucky) on several categories, such as my school opportunities, legacy, Stanford connections / experience, etc. But I know several friends who got in without any of that stuff. They just showed their personality and passion by making sure everything reflected their VOICE and delved into SPECIFICS.
Overall, I’m really blessed that I got in, but I’ve been trusting in God to lead me to the right college, and it seems like Stanford is it!

Writing (Rate Quality on 1-10 Scale; 10 as Best):[ul]

[] Why Stanford: (9)

[] Income Bracket: $29,000
[] Hooks (URM, first generation college, etc.): none?[/ul]

Reflection[ul]
[] Strengths: My school’s curriculum is freakin’ intense, and every major college knows it (we’ve already got multiple acceptances for Duke, Cornell, UPenn, and Columbia). Just going there says a lot about your academic standards. I think my unique-ness (concerning DDR) helped a lot, along with my course rigor, leadership experience with my club, and working 20 hours/week. My counselors probably said a lot of nice things about me too.
[] Weaknesses: I’m not a great writer, so I didn’t feel totally confident with any of my essays. And, now seeing who I was up against, my standardized test scores weren’t all that great. I certainly didn’t have any insider help or the money to push myself over the edge.
[] Why you think you were accepted/deferred/rejected: Maybe they flipped a coin. I don’t know. I’d like to think my strengths made me unique enough to be accepted.
[] What would you have done differently?: I guess nothing, since I got in haha.[/ul]

Came early last night, not rejected or accepted, actually kinda surprised since I know Stanford tries not to have folks left in limbo. Is there really anything special you can do to increase the odds of getting accpeted in the RD process…other than making sure your GPA stays solid

peruviangirl, make sure to make something of the next few months i.e. volunteer, work, etc, and write Stanford a letter of all the things you have done since the time you have submitted your original app.
