Decision: Deferred
http://talk.collegeconfidential.com/stanford-university/108812-deferred-stanford-more-meangingful.html</a> (I agree with this person’s statement towards deferrals)

Objective:[ul]

Subjective:[ul]
[] Extracurriculars (place leadership in parentheses): (not filling out, I apologize)
[] Job/Work Experience: (not filling out, I apologize)
[] Volunteer/Community service: (not filling out, I apologize)
[] Summer Activities: (not filling out, I apologize) and it’s not like they even have any room on the Common App for you to list ALL of your credentials…[/ul]

Writing (Rate Quality on 1-10 Scale; 10 as Best):[ul]
[] Essays (Include Subjects):
Interesting. They were interesting, or at least fun to read. Almost every essay ties in with another essay (or all of them tie together), so that was pleasant.
[] Common App Main: 9 (My life, basically)
[] EC Short Answer: Don’t remember… What was the topic? Elaborate on extra currics? If so, then maybe a 7 (YLL)
[] Intellectual Vitality: 8 (NHD)
[] Roommate: 9 (I talked about my books, if any of you read manga, I mentioned Tokyo Mew Mew in it, IT’S RIDICULOUS! hahaha)
[] Why Stanford: 8 (ties in with the rest of my essays…)
[] Other: 9 (Zoo School :] )[/ul]
[li] Teacher Recommendation #1: (not filling out, I apologize)[/li][] Teacher Recommendation #2: (not filling out, I apologize)
[] Counselor Rec: (not filling out, I apologize)
[] Additional Rec: (not filling out, I apologize)
[] Interview:-----------
[] Art Supplement:-------- (I chickened out as well… plus the due date was WAY too early)
Other[ul]
[] Date Submitted App: Halloween (a.k.a. LAST), at like 10:30 pm, I like living on the edge :]
[] State (if domestic applicant): Neb-to-the-raska
[] Country (if international applicant):
[] School Type: Public
[] Ethnicity: Chinese
[] Gender: Female
[] Income Bracket: Middle class for where I live, poor for where you live
[] Hooks (URM, first generation college, etc.): Damnit! None! [/ul]

Reflection[ul]
[] Strengths: Essays :] They really brought out my personality, I worked on them SO MUCH. ACT. I go to a Science Focus Program. I could go on, but too many people here would not consider them strengths…
[] Weaknesses: Everything. Subject tests, bad quarter grade report (too many B’s… sigh), no national FINALIST awards (tried to do intel, college professors here are so stingy; doing NHD again this year, but it will be June once it’s time for nationals). I’m not valedictorian, and started high school off with really shotty grades (started out freshman year ranked in the 60s, but steadily improved).
[li] Why you think you were accepted/deferred/rejected: I think they want to see my semester grades, rather than my bad quarter grades. Will this seal the deal? Who knows?
[/li]

But let me just say one thing, those of you who get perfect SAT scores and are looking at my scores and are having your eyeballs pop out of their sockets, or have been valedictorian all throughout high school, I guess from this stand point, none of that really matters as long as you’re in the ball park, and have a passion (serious passion) about life. I hope those of you who have trouble with this find it someday :] I’m rooting for you.
[li] What would you have done differently?: I don’t know. I feel proud of what I’ve done thus far. I was by no means a shoe in, that’s for sure, and I did my best with what I had at the time. I’m working hard, and love this burst of motivation. [/ul]
[/li]

General Comments:
[GOOD LUCK TO EVERYBODY ELSE WHO WAS DEFERRED, WE ARE IN THE SAME BOAT. I feel really lucky to be deferred from Stanford I truly see it as a silver lining because barely anybody gets deferred from Stanford (unlike MIT and Yale)! Please wish us all luck! Keep optimistic!

Congratulations sooooooooooo much to those who’ve already made it in!! Don’t let us down. I feel so happy seeing the credentials of those who were accepted, you guys make me proud!

Others who were rejected, my good friend who is valedictorian at my same school was rejected, goodness sake he is so smart! Don’t cry for too long, pick yourself back up. You know you’re intelligent, just don’t be cocky (there are so many people on here who for the “why do you think you were rejected” part put, “I don’t know”. Some of you have the right to say that, but honestly, that’s just your opinion man (oh my gosh! lebowski quote!) and you should learn to be a bit more humble.) Perhaps we’ll meet again someday :]](<a href="http://talk.collegeconfidential.com/stanford-university/824165-official-stanford-rea-admissions-2014-discussion-thread.html"“>http://talk.collegeconfidential.com/stanford-university/824165-official-stanford-rea-admissions-2014-discussion-thread.html”</a>)

I’m sending positive karma waves to all of you! Good luck with life!

[] Why you think you were accepted/deferred/rejected:
[] What would you have done differently?:[/ul]

General Comments:
Wow. I still cannot believe I got in. I’m not exactly sure how, but I’m super excited!!! Thank you Stanford! I see some amazing people who got rejected, and it’s a bittersweet feeling. Good luck to everyone with their remaining colleges!

Okay, I calculated the rates for us so far

Acceptance Rate: 36.6% (26/71)
Deferral: 15.5% (11/71)
Rejection: 47.9% (34/71)

This seems pretty optimistic, but I’m pretty sure this is biased because of us all being CCers. There may be some slight inaccuracy (not sure if I counted everyone EXACTLY correctly), but that’s what I have so far.

Whether you were accepted, deferred, or rejected, I commend all of you for putting up your stats, helping all of us get a bigger picture of the REA Decisions this year and to help the class of 2015.

Decision: Rejected

Objective:[ul]

[] ACT: 30
[] Unweighted GPA (out of 4.0): 4.0

June '09 - Present: Resort Clerk
[] Volunteer/Community service: Yeah. A lot.
[li] Summer Activities:[/ul] Working, Baseball League, 5Ks, Freshman Orientation, BBS 09, Other Misc.
[/li]

Writing (Rate Quality on 1-10 Scale; 10 as Best):[ul]
[] Essays (Include Subjects):
[li] Common App Main:I thought it was a 10, but I’m not sure anymore. About my experience as an exchange student in Japan.[/li][] EC Short Answer: Wrote about how Student Council has expanded under my leadership. Like an 8.
[] Intellectual Vitality: Talked about being on the school board’s strategic planning committee which involved developing guidelines for the school district. A 9.
[] Roommate: My worst easily. I just talked about what an average day would be for me. My quirks, etc. Probably a 6.
[] Why Stanford: Explained what I liked about my visit. My desire to work with the Haas Center for Public Service and also the Bing overseas program. I explained why I liked the quarter system… I don’t know…
[] Other:[/ul]
[] Teacher Recommendation #1: Really good. My physics/chem teacher/student council adviser. She explained how I asked for AP Physics work since all that’s available at our school is intro to physics, which I thought was a nice touch. She really went into great detail about my community service efforts (organizing blood drives, dances for the food pantry, etc.) and about my leadership in student council.
[] Teacher Recommendation #2: This one was different. The teacher I asked worked in admissions at a nearby college (which I actually didn’t know until after he wrote the rec) several years ago. He wrote it from kind of an odd perspective of how he would examine my application as an admissions person and… I don’t know… It was weird. May have backfired, but I didn’t really expect what he gave me.
[] Counselor Rec: Haven’t read it, but she really likes me.
[] Additional Rec: Track coach. Again, didn’t read it, but I know he talked about my athletic transformation between my Sophomore and Jr. year. I was one of the slowest people on the track team, but I worked at it all summer, dropped forty pounds, and became one of the best mid-/distance runners we have.
[] Interview: None
[] Art Supplement:
None

Other[ul]
[] Date Submitted App: 10/30
[] State (if domestic applicant): WI
[] Country (if international applicant):
[] School Type: Small, Small, Small Public with about 350 kids.
[] Ethnicity: White
[] Gender: M
[] Income Bracket: $150,000+ (barely)
[] Hooks (URM, first generation college, etc.):[/ul]
First-Gen
My dad was an immigrant but I don’t know if that really even matters.

Reflection
[] Strengths: ECs, Recs, Grades
[] Weaknesses: Test Score (Retook ACT today, a little too late. Would’ve been done in October, but I had Cross Country Sectionals that morning)

General Comments:
I don’t know. When I read the e-mail it just kind of knocked the wind out of me. I just don’t understand what else I could’ve done.

If anyone sees anything wrong with mine, I would appreciate a PM.

the stats posted by rolandic are skewed. the numbers may be correct for posters on CC, but skewed nonetheless.

number of deferrals is larger than it should be…as is the number of acceptances.

the most skewed is probably deferrals. they didnt get a definitive reply and want more information/answers. they are poking around CC looking for an idea of what their chances may be come april.

the accepted kids just are super energetic about telling the world they got in. they just want to vent their happiness somewhere.

the denied kids don’t wanna talk about it (usually). they are sad and want to view some profiles of those accepted so they can see what they weren’t. but they dont wanna post their own profiles or any of that. they want to move on to the rest of their college list. they dont post as much as those deferred or accepted.

don’t get me wrong. the profiles/stats of those accpeted/deffered/denied are very helpful. but don’t read too much into the numbers or percentages (i.e. accepted rate)

+1

As we’d say in Statistics, the sample suffers from voluntary response bias.

Yes, they’re obviously skewed because it is based on Voluntary response, but they’re accurate in the sense that based on this forum (which is skewed) it’s accurate.

Decision: Deferred

[] Intellectual Vitality: Direct Conversation–Specifically an instance in France about History (Slightly above average? Wasn’t too confident.)

[] Weaknesses: Typos!; SAT II Scores; Not super rigorous classes Freshman/Sophomore year.
[] Why you think you were accepted/deferred/rejected: I am still really, incredibly surprised that I was accepted. I sincerely hoped for at least a deferral upon submitting. Though, perhaps my passion towards studying abroad was a main draw. Just being startlingly sincere and upfront maybe?
[] What would you have done differently?: Re-read over my essays more carefully to prevent typos!! Goodness…and studied harder for SAT IIs.[/ul]

Best of luck to all of those reading this wanting to weigh their chances. While I hope my profile is helpful, please don’t take much stock in it, as there are so many uncontrollable variables when it comes to admissions. Just, please be upfront and completely sincere in all aspects of your application! Display your passion (whatever it may be) as glaringly obvious as possible.

To those who have had to swallow the bitter pill of disappointment from being denied or get crushed by uncertainty from deferral, it is really upsetting to read all of your profiles because you all seem as equally likely–or more so in many cases—to be Stanford students, and I probably can’t even come close to imagining how you are feeling right now. But, alas, you are still all assuredly bright people, and I earnestly wish you the best of luck in your other applications!

[li] Major Awards (USAMO, Intel etc.):[/ul] nothing major, some small state/regional awards
[/li]

Subjective:[ul]
[] Extracurriculars (place leadership in parenthesis): yearbook (editor in chief), debate (extemp speaking captain), model un (secretary), young democrats (publicity director), varisty cross country, varsity track, kung fu, french symposium, national honor society (chairperson), french national honor society
[] Job/Work Experience: none
[] Volunteer/Community service: weekly volunteer at a cancer center, coach the middle school debate team every summer
[] Summer Activities: basically, absolutely nothing. i had to stretch it to fill up all the characters.
[] Essays: i think they were pretty solid. my common app essay was about my debate teacher in middle school who unsuccessfully ran for congress. i talked about learning the difference between speaking and communicating, and included a humorous anecdote about confusing hamas (the palestinian organization) and hummus (the mediterranean appetizer). my intellectual vitality was my best-written essay but wildly off-topic. it was about volunteering at the cancer center by giving out hats to different patients, and revolved around a metaphor of putting on a different hat and seeing things a different way. my roommate really pushed the fact that i’m comprised of a lot of different ethnicities by comparing quiet, reserved, white-people christmases at my dad’s with the loud rambunctious cuban parties at my mom’s. why stanford was a bit weird - it compared my accomplishments in high school to inertia, and painted stanford as a place with opportunities to continue things i had started accidentally.
[] Teacher Recommendation: one GREAT teacher rec, but she had been an academic teacher in the 10th grade (french). one that was probably solid from an english teacher in 11th and 12th. no science or math.
[] Counselor Rec: meh. generic.
[] Additional Rec: a good one from my volunteer coordinator.
[li] Interview: n/a[/ul]
[/li]

[li] Hooks (URM, first generation college, etc.): legacy from dad, uncle, and aunt[/ul]
[/li]

Reflection[ul]
[] Strengths: essays, the french teacher rec, well rounded extracurriculars, good sat score
[] Weaknesses: no sat 2s, not much science/math represented in my courses, not a great rank
[li] Why you think you were accepted: being a solid, okay candidate, + minority, + legacy. honestly i dont think i would have gotten in without those two things. i come from a really large public school thats top 100 in the nation. our valedictorian and our saludatorian, both of which had really good extracurrics too, didn’t get in.[/ul]
[/li]

General Comments: for all of you who didn’t get in, know that it’s absolutely arbitrary. my two best friends also didn’t get in, and everyone thought they were for sure.
