Good luck to all who are interviewing on Feb 20th and Feb 21st weekend at UG & NEOMED.
Ditto!
Good luck everyone & safe travels this weekend! The weather looks good for this - no snow! Yay!
@jumbletumbles - Thank you. Good luck to your son!!
Good Luck to all. Also a friendly reminder to those who ARE interviewing at YSU, make sure to take your supplemental forms with you !
To all who interviewed in Jan / Feb, what are your thoughts about each of the UG campus, the interviews, the program in general, the curriculum? Did anything stuck out ? Are your kids still thinking the 6 year route or the 7 year ?
Everything was more or less as expected
I posted more ^ but it got cut off. Again. I’m giving up for now… Lol. Will try to post more another time. Going to go rest now after the exhausting weekend…
To those who interviewed, @ NEOMED - They did talk about Mercy hospital option for FINAID. Any thoughts on that ?
@Pras2016 @VaishS @dvrvarma123 @dreamed and anyone else lurking that has yet to brave posting here…
How did interviews go for you all? As expected, better, worse?
Were your opinions of the program changed with any of the info presented?
Did your thoughts on ranking the UGs change unexpectedly?
Completely understand we’re all still in the process! But now that it’s just a waiting game, I thought a little chatter & discussion might help pass the time.
@dreamed it seems there are several full ride options that NEOMED helps med student match up with, mercy being just 1 of them. Very tempting offer if one is truly thinking of going into primary care.
@jumbletumbles - Great idea and Great questions !! I will take the 1st stab at your questions.
How did interviews go for you all? As expected, better, worse? - Better as expected, I was not as nerve wrecked, they went by too fast. It was a wonderful exposure.
Were your opinions of the program changed with any of the info presented? - Not really.
Did your thoughts on ranking the UGs change unexpectedly? - Yes, I had visited Akron 2 yrs ago (with BS/MD program in mind in the future) and I thought I was going to rank Akron as my top pick, but after visiting other campuses, the ranking changed.
Now it’s turn for others’ to respond.
I am keeping in mind that future applicants will benefit from our discussion. I know I have learnt a few things from CC (prior year posts) so just adding to the knowledge bank…
How did interviews go for you all? As expected, better, worse?
Youngstown was not good- the interviewers seemed really rude to me (some other friends had this opinion too), NEOMED was so much fun (think I did well too), Akron was ok, and Kent was really really good (loved the questions and interviewers)
Were your opinions of the program changed with any of the info presented?
Yes. I didn’t have very much information on the program beforehand so I learned a lot. I actually like it more than I thought I would. The thing that really caught my attention was Akron’s 6-year B.S./M.D./M.B.A. program. I am very interesting in an MBA and I didn’t know you could do all three things in 6 years! I also liked the BS/MD environment at the schools
Did your thoughts on ranking the UGs change unexpectedly?
I had no idea on how to rank them going in (no info) so the info really helped me rank them. I put Akron first bc of the MBA program I mentioned and because of the balance between science and humanities, then Kent bc with the academic freedom I could look into some of my other interests as well, and I put Youngstown last bc of the campus, very competitive environment, and the interview experience
Only today bumped in to this thread. My D attended in Jan. In her group there were 12 students (believe 10 OOS and 2 IS) and heard there were total of 4 batches that day (So guess around 45-50 students). Heard mostly OOS in Jan. Got invite only from Akron.
Welcome @GoldenRock! I wonder if a majority of the OOS were interviewed in January. Seems almost cruel considering the weather is rather unpredictable & can be harsh especially in January! Lol. Are you IS or OOS? I’ve seen you around the boards, but don’t recall.
@dreamed Sounds like you did a lot of good groundwork well ahead of time. Good for you! I’m sure you made the right choices for yourself.
@VaishS My son said similar things about YSU. It was his least favorite of all the interviews. He said it was difficult to engage his interviewers or to even get much of a response from them. Reading past years’ threads, he’d expected this of Akron. Instead, he found Akron & the MMIs the most fun.
As for the BS/MD/MBA at Akron, my son had been told in late summer that a 3rd year in UG was needed to fulfill the requirements for that. Did that change or was he given misinformation?
My son’s ranking & opinions of the program didn’t change. Mostly it just solidified what he already had in his head. Oddly, the order that he put of best to worst interviews doesn’t actually correlate to how he ended up ranking the UGs. So many of his interviewers were from fields outside of medicine that he didn’t feel it would be a good reference stick to use interview experiences in his ranking considerations. Anyone else find it odd that so many non-medicine people were interviewers?
@jumbletumbles OOS. In Jan mostly OOS. Probably 40 out of 45 were OOS in that day alone. Luckily that day in Jan was unusually warm since we brought the heat from CA. I post and follow the 2016 BS/MD thread. Just noticed this thread today. If I am not mistaken, Akron mentioned it will be 3 years if some one wants to do BA/MD/MBA.
I asked specifically and they said it is possible to do all three in 6 years!
@VaishS - The professor explaining the MBA route also mentioned that those who choose to do the BS and MBA within 6 years will have some MBA courses that will carry over while they are in Medical school and there will be some evenings they will have to come and attend MBA classes or have MBA classwork. The # of those who do actually attempt to do so, is very low.
Maybe I totally missed to listen carefully, but at Kent, do boys and girls share the same wing of the Honors dorms? Or are they situated as YSU ? or separated by floors ? I had to catch up with the tour…so maybe I missed this info.
Could someone give me an overview on their Akron tour, I could not take the tour because after Akron I had to keep moving to the next one. The timing for next tour at Akron was too close to my MMIs. Wonder what all has changed ?
Just a general question to all @VaishS, @jumbletumbles @Pras2016, @GoldenRock @dvrvarma123 - What would keep you from committing into the program (assuming when you got an offer) ?
I like how Akron has Intro to Public Speaking course.
@jumbletumbles - At every interview I ran into an interviewer who was from non-medicine background. I was surprised that they did not have any Psychology / Humanities interviewers in the panel (considering how MCAT has tweaked their required courses).
Pretty much whoever I spoke to during Feb interview weekends, had interviews invite from all 3 UGs and were IS. Did anyone notice the same pattern ?
