Does anyone have any feedbacks to share on NEOMED 2016 interviews ?
Just texted my friend, I’ll let y’all know soon
Just realized that I can’t find an official date or timeframe that final decisions are made. Anyone happen to know?
Sorry, forgot to update you guys!!!
So my friend said that the interviews for the undergrad schools were “really chill” but that the actual NEOMED one was different
She said that for the NEOMED one there were about 7 different mini interviews where in each you are given a scenario and you have 2 minutes to read it and plan your answer. Then you go into a room and you have 8 minutes to converse with the interviewer on the topic/scenario. She couldn’t tell me the topics bc apparently we have the same ones as them but she said that the topics are about healthcare, social/economic status effects in relation to health, and basic things about helping underprivileged communities in general
Thank you @VaishS ! Helpful to know the format at least!
@VaishS - Did they tell your friend when they will release the final decisions after the interviews and how they will be released (email / snail mail) ?
@dreamed Just texted her, ill let you know what she says
@VaishS - Thank you.
She said that they will mail letters on March 11th but they will also try to send out an email by that Friday since its around spring break and people may be on vacation.
@VaishS - Awesome, I am glad they are not waiting till end of March and using only Snail Mail. Thank you for sharing !
Np! @dreamed
Out of curiosity, do any of you feel there’s an edge in doing interviews in Jan vs Feb?
I have no idea how they go about making decisions after interviews, so I started wondering. Do they A) wait until everyone is interviewed to make final decisions or B) if they figure about 1/2 from Jan & 1/2 from Feb so they’ve already chosen their candidates from the first set.
Don’t know that it does any good to know this! Lol. But the mind wanders when there’s so much wait time.
@jumbletumbles - Last night I was thinking about the same question…same frequency …lol …
I was thinking about their strategy paths because they will only have 18 calendar days left from when the Feb interviews are over (Feb 21st), assuming the final decisions come out on March 11th ( as stated by one of the candidates).
My guess is they shortlist some candidates from Jan round. Then they short list some more candidates from Feb round. And finally compare them some more before pairing them up with a college.
Your option A would be tough to do in last 18 days. Just speculating !! :-S
@dreamed - Glad we’re not the only ones wondering! Feeling less crazy now
Or maybe every question or each interviewer rates answers on a scale so all that needs done is to tally up the scores after the last set of interviews?
If that’s the case, then basically, they would be doing more of an option A.
I highly doubt we’ll ever know, but it’s interesting to think about.
@jumbletumbles - Tally could be another way.
Which brings me to another question, does anyone know, if NEOMED asks the candidates to rank (out of the 3 colleges) which undergraduate college the applicant wants to attend ? Does this ranking survey happen after the interviews are over via snail mail / electronically or while you are there for interview?
@dreamed At the visit day we attended, we were told that after all the interviews were finished, he would be given a form/sheet to fill out & would need to rank our undergrad preferences 1, 2, 3. Obviously, if only interviewing for 1 or 2 undergrads, then 1 or 1, 2.
Then the school ranks all the candidates they interviewed 1, 2, 3… all the way to the last one they want. They don’t have to rank everyone. So if one undergrad interviews 200 students but decides there are only 50 they’d consider, their list would be 1-50.
Then basically it’s all thrown into a match. So your highest ranked school to their highest ranked candidate matches to each other. It’s the same match system used for residency matching.
I hope that helps!
@jumbletumbles Interviews are scheduled next weekend for my son.
Looking for the information to compare these colleges from BS/MD program point of view.
Could anyone share the information so that will help to rank the colleges based on the priorities?
@Pras2016 I’m not sure I understand your question. “Help rank the colleges based on the priorities” part is specifically the confusing point because everyone’s priorities will be different thus difficult to rank.
And I’m not aware of any published ranking list that specifically ranks BSMD programs against each other.
Could you clarify exactly what you’re wanting to compare & are you asking about just the 3 undergrads associated with NEOMED or all BSMD programs?
@jumbletumbles sorry it was not worded correctly.
In order to decide on preferences (for Akron,Kent,Youngstown), why a NEOMED applicant would prefer one college over the others?
Like one thing I came to know while talking to someone is
- Kent is better for arts, Akron is for engineering and Youngstown is for science
For my son he has a chance of getting more college credits (AP and other college credits) at Youngstown than other two. But it would not be the only reason to give it first preference.
I just wanted to know all the factors the NEOMED applicant needs to consider before giving preferences for these colleges ?
@Pras2016 As far as the actual courses undergrads take during that portion of the curriculum, I believe the link posted before is this http://www.neomed.edu/admissions/medicine/bsmd/curr-ug.
Another resource we used was the AAMC’s Medical School Admission Requirements for U.S. and Canadian. It’s $25 for the subscription to access the current data online.
Other than those 2 resources, our best insights came from just talking with the individual UGs themselves, students, alumni, visiting the campuses, & searching their websites. So basic grunt work you do for any college. We just asked about the specifics that were important to my son, which are very likely different than the important factors to your son. He is not concerned whatsoever with transfer of AP or college credits & was interested more in the ‘softer’ aspects. How much room in the schedule to take other (non-NEOMED required courses that may be interesting), campus life, etc. Basically, he trusts the system to be in place for him to learn everything he needs to in UG in order to be successful once at NEOMED because the program would not have lasted as long nor as successfully as it has if it didn’t.
So other than verifying data that NEOMED provides on their website, we aren’t much help for the info you’re looking for. Sorry. He’s basically go with his gut based off of everything he’s read & experienced.
