My D is the same, interviewed for HPME, but rejected for NW UG. Wondering how many like this…Now, she really doubts about her ability to get into any good schools. I am not sure if she is really not that qualified?
@texaspg you mean an update email? Hum I dont think my S received any
@WaitingtoKnow @college-j I am sorry to hear about rejections from Northwestern for HPME interviewees. I find it very disrespectful that they don’t merit atleast a waitlist anymore after spending so much time and money following the NU process.
I wouldn’t put too much credence on the abilities of one school or a few schools in discerning the inherent value of these kids who worked so hard to get where they are. I can guarantee that whereever they go to school, that school will be much better for having them.
FWIW, my older D withdrew her app from NU after not getting an interview, is completing her undergrad and has 4 top 10 medical school admissions on hand after interviewing at 6 of them. My advice is not to let them take it personally and use this as motivation rather than wallow in self-doubt.
@waitingtoknow - Brown and Columbia have issued likely letters to many applicants in the past month. However, they are bound by Ivy rules that they all need to issue admission results on a single day and it is currently listed as 3/31.
@texaspg i am just wondering since your daughter is a 4th year in college, are you just following this thread for fun, i mean, did your daughter apply to these programs 4 years ago? if so, would it be possible for you to disclose where she applied, interviewed, accepted, and how she made her final decisions? It would be really helpful and i would really appreciate it. you can PM me if you like
@smartalec - She was not a typical BS/MD applicant and applied only to 4 top programs back then based around top 20 medical schools, got into one which no longer exists but chose not to go.
@texaspg Thanks for the encouragement! May I know which college your daughter went to? We are still debating on if my D should just go to a good state college, get high GPA and then go to medical school or go to a hard Ivy school. Does it matter?
@nutella19 tysm!
@college-j Depends on the actual choices, financial status and your home state.
The golden rule on CC is that medical schools cost a lot of money and it is important to save money at the undergrad level. So if you can get a large amount of FA and attend an Ivy by all means one should do that.
Most medical school students ultimately end up in their home state for medical school since many state schools have a large percentage of seats blocked for residents. Most states are also lot cheaper for residents which is one of the main reasons for people going to HYPS from Texas but still ending up in UT Southwestern or Baylor. Texas is one of the best residencies to have since they have a lot of seats for their population while California is one of the worst since they have a lot fewer seats but also admit a large percentage of OOS students.
@texaspg Thanks for your advice. Do you have any related information for the state of Virginia?
From what I can see, Virginia, VCU, and Eastern Virginia are holding only 50% for in state.
@college-j : Your D should be assured that acceptance or rejection to any school pre or post interview does not mean much in the whole scheme of things. We all know that there are a lot of uncontrollable and unjustifiable variables in a school’s decision making process. I’ve have personally seen a student who was not even given an application to NU-HPME make it to Princeton and is very happy there getting ready to go to med school. Another student again denied an application to apply for HPME doing fabulous at MIT. So, NU rejection should not bear any weight on her academic morale.
I am not biased towards or against NU-HPME because I personally have one kid in the program already. I definitely know that it is a good program. But, not getting in there is not the end of the world. Just an FYI: my second D chose not to apply to NU-HPME despite having a sibling there. So, rejections to these programs should be taken with a grain of salt. Just help her maitain a positive approach and keep going. There are always better things to come that one rejection even if it were her top school.
Good luck to her on her decision making process.
When does PLME announce their decisions? I’d been under the assumption it would be released along with the UG decision on 3/31 but after reading @WaitingtoKnow 's comment, I checked the PLME website published info to see it actually states just early April.
So are PLME decisions released after UG decisions?
@texaspg Thanks for the info. Please confirm if I understood correctly. Say for example, my D is from CA from the birth till today. Let us say for discussion sake, she attends some school outside CA for UG and when she applies for MD in 4 years from now, will she be considered as in state from CA or since she did her UG outside CA, she will not be considered in CA in state pool for MD?
What % of students for in state in CA?
Agree based on all the research I have done, CA is the worst state for MD applicants and Texas is the best and few other states are also very good to get in to medicine like Ohio, Missouri, NY.
@texaspg Thanks! Is 50% holding for in state a big number as compare to other states?
People retain their residency status while they are undergrads and if they start working somewhere after graduation then they become residents of that state due to work. I think the preference is not the best when the instate is reserved at 50%. The best instate schools have 80% or more residents.
@narkor Thank you so much for your encouragement. I will pass your comments to my daughter.
@jumbletumbles PLME results will be included in the letter on the Brown portal with the UG letter on 3/31
@jamini Thanks!
Northwestern HPME decisions are out; got in… FREAKING OUT!!!
