They posted my undergrad decision but i applied for BSMD.Undergrad needs to be approved before bsmd decisions?
@honors1 When did you interview with Drexel Med?
@honors1 That is true, drexel updates portal when they announce UG decision. But UG admission update came long time back. Call to college of medicine goes to VM. But UG admission folk told, only college of medicine will decide and will notify both accept, reject on or before March 31st. There should be a email from college of medicine.
Since Miami results are not out yet and many students have already been selected to higher rated programs such as NW, BU and REMS this post is a request to anyone who is no longer interested in Miami to notify the program so that it can free up a spot for others. Your gesture will be much appreciated by someone further down the queue and it will make someone else’s dream come true. Thanks
@GoldenRock Last year Drexel/Drexel could see it on their portal. The words congratulating you changed from welcome to undergraduate … to welcome to the program you applied to (something like that)
Not sure how it will be this year
@BSMDApplFather I think it goes for other programs like AMC related ones too as they actually wait to get an answer from people who will not accept so that they can bump some others up
I would like to second the comment @BSMDApplFather made. Thank you!
Probably a question that’s been asked before, but do you think that for someone who definitely wants to be a doctor and prestige is a factor, is it better to go through a BS/MD program or an ivy undergrad plus top 10 med school?
@randomsguy One thing to consider is that getting into a top 10 medical school is extremely difficult. If the choice was as simple as BS/MD vs Ivy/Top 10 Medical school, it would be an easy choice.
@randomsguy Certainly “ivy undergrad plus top 10 med school”. But first can you tell what is your probability to get in to Ivy and then a top 10 med school? Then decide!
Random factual example. A top notch student who completed BS in UPenn and published papers in international conference and got MCAT 39 and have very good GPA and applied to few medical top 20 schools and got nothing. Waitlisted in UPenn and another top medical school. Hind sight student felt, should have applied to variety of schools outside of top 20, than applied only to selective top 20 schools. Also that student felt bad for not knowing lot about BS/MD when went for the normal route. Sure that student will eventually get, but now have to go thru the test of will and still be calm, collective until the job is done.
If the BS/MD program is decent and meets most of your wish list, go for it than hoping for ever. Agree it is going to differ from each individual. GL.
@Joobycooby Yes, I was just saying that to make a point. A lot of the bs/md med schools are not super top tier, and people who can get into these programs can probably get into a med school as prestigious, if not more. Add in the fact that someone accepted into bs/md program will spend their first four years in an UG that is not a top choice, and the line becomes more blurred. Plus a safety net is great for some people, and not for others. When I went on an interview to one of these programs, one of the students in the program told me how he coasted through the first three years, spending all his free time playing video games and sleeping. That is the opposite of what I am looking for in an undergrad experience
@randomsguy I agree with you that it ultimately comes down to personal preference. While getting into a top med school is hard, it’s not impossible and if you have second thoughts about being locked into an undergrad and med school, BS/MD may not be right for you. You say that you’re not looking to slack off and this motivation will bring you far. Go where you’ll be happiest!
Anyone get Penn State’s financial aid package? Any idea why it shows summer 2017 in the estimated costs?
is there a facebook page for penn state bs/md ?
If I got accepted to Stony Brooks University Scholars Program, does that mean I won’t get the medical scholars program interview invite?
@randomsguy it’s important to understand when prestige would matter, and that is if you see yourself in a research-oriented role once you finish your training. If you are interested in that path and it’s low tier med school vs. traditional route, there’s certainly a debate to be had. For anything else (primary care, community practice), prestige might give you more flexibility but any US MD gets the job done.
Your concerns are generally valid, though I would like to add that experiencing undergrad w/o the pressures of medical school can potentially lead to a more fulfilling experience, since you can devote time to activities that you truly enjoy vs. activities that look good for medical school. You do need to have the right mindset though (unlike the BS/MD student you talked to).
@J2H239 Yeah! I understand interview is crucial! By stats I meant how many applied in total and how many accepted
@ihasit I put 2019
My son received Miami UG email today. We are still waiting for BSMD result.
