***Official Thread for 2017 BSMD applicants***

At a college fair. Just spoke to the Miami rep. In her words, “kids keep caLiking me and they are worried that the new requirements are going to be harder. They are not - we are making it better”. It will be posted around the 15th"

Just posted a new thread on general information related to BS/MD program and the process in a lighthearted manner. Readers of this thread, you may already know, but still I thought of letting you know.

Did any one apply to Union yet and did you get your login userid/password to check the app status?

@GoldenRock, thank you for the BS/MD process writeup.

Does anyone know how the recommendation letter for Penn State’s program should be submitted? Is there an online submission or is it sent through mail?

@chocolatina1001, it looks to be by snail mail: http://science.psu.edu/premed/accelerated-programs/premedmed

It’s common courtesy to give your letter writer a large manila envelope with the recipient mailing address that it’s going to typed/written in and postage applied so they can just slip the letter inside, seal it, and mail it off when they’re done. You can probably have the return address as the letter writer’s name with your high school school address.

@Roentgen Thank you so much!

Hi,
This is my first post so let me first thank everyone who has been providing the valuable and helpful insight into this challenging process.

I hope as I go through this experience, I can do so in the future.

Question: For SAT that is on October 1 and application that are due on November 1 - how to handle this?
Thanks

@BS_MD2017 Do u mean to say this is the first time you are going to take SAT coming Oct 1st, or you plan to retake? Have you taken ACT? If you have taken SAT or ACT before, mention that score. Once you get the new score (assume it is higher than your previous takes), send the new score again to the schools. They are not going to decide on Nov 1st.

@BS_MD2017, I’m not really understanding your question, but the test score from the October 1st SAT, will be available to students on October 27th and sent to colleges beginning on October 26th, well before the November 1st deadline: https://collegereadiness.collegeboard.org/sat/scores/getting-scores

Thanks for the responses - Apologize for not being clear.

It is the SAT II subject test that I am taking for the first time in Oct and is required for schools with Nov 1 deadline.

My Sat I scores are

1st Sitting (730 M 720CR 800 W)

2nd Sitting (800M 800 CR 770W)

  • Should i send just the second score to colleges (2370) or both scores (super score 2400) ?

Thanks.

I’m not sure if this completely pertains to BS/MD programs, but is applying as a pre-med major a good idea?
Case Western (PPSP 8-year medical program) has a “Pre-med” major, but I feel like part of the reason why an applicant would want to apply to a BS/MD program is to be able to explore other interests and not stress about the specific to “pre-med” classes, extracurriculars, etc.

@ccuser00 There is nothing called ‘pre-med’ major. Kind of tripped you in CWRU site. But once you click the ‘pre-med’ major, it will give more details. You can do any major if you are selected to PPSP and here is the snippet.

“Pre-Professional Scholars in Medicine are free to choose from among all of the degree and major programs offered in the university, but must complete the courses in biochemistry, biology, chemistry, physics, math/statistics, and behavioral sciences listed in the Conditions of Admission letter they received when accepted to the program. …”

@BS_MD2017,

The SAT Subject Exams have the same timeline as above: https://collegereadiness.collegeboard.org/sat-subject-tests/scores/getting-scores

I would send the second score. It beats your first score by about 120 points which is a lot, and your individual scores in M and CR completely beat your 1st set with the 800s. I don’t know how many schools or Bachelor/MDs really superscore, quite honestly vs. only looking at individual test dates. So just sent the 2nd score only.

@Roentgen , @GoldenRock . Do you guys have any idea about Hofstra’s BSMD program? We are not sure about the reputation of this program. I was not able to find in other previous threads. Thanks again for helping so many kids and their families during their application process.

@chesscrazy,

So the Hofstra School of Medicine received Preliminary Accreditation in 2010 and attained Provisional Accreditation in 2013. Their first graduating match class was in 2015. You can see their match lists here:

2015: http://news.hofstra.edu/2015/03/20/med-schools-match-day-100-placement-inaugural-class/
2016: http://medicine.hofstra.edu/students/new/students_matchday.html

At least for right now, they seem to have smaller med school class sizes. So far they seem to be doing pretty good: http://■■■■■■■■■■■■■■■■■■■■■■■■/threads/2015-2016-hofstra-university-application-thread.1134984/

Their main teaching hospital is North Shore-LIJ Health System what is now renamed Northwell Health (it’s a relatively posh community hospital although it’s now technically an academic hospital due to the Hofstra affiliation). It’s ranked #82 in Research: http://grad-schools.usnews.rankingsandreviews.com/best-graduate-schools/top-medical-schools/hofstra-university-04169, which isn’t bad for a medical school that just recently started, considering other much older US medical schools that have been running for decades are still “unranked” or “rank not published” in USWNR. Even if it didn’t have that - other NY medical schools are about an hour away from it (although this is in New York so it may take longer) so there would probably be other opportunities available in reasonable distance. That being said, I believe Hofstra has all the departments with residency training programs, including even those in competitive specialties: http://medicine.hofstra.edu/department/.

The biggest drawback that I can see is price, currently $42,160 annually at Hofstra undergrad, 49,779 annually at the med school: http://colleges.usnews.rankingsandreviews.com/best-colleges/hofstra-university-2732.

@chesscrazy Though it was in our list, my D did not apply (due to school constraints). But one of her schoolmate this year got selected and joined. Though the university is in existence from 1935 (ranked 133), the medical school (ranked 82) started only few years back in 2010 or so. Both medical school and the BS/MD program is so new. Number of seats for BS/MD is not known (so you need to call them and get it). But they gave decent merit scholarship ($20k+) for the boy who got selected. Compare to other new medical schools, this school may prosper since the backing of this school is business and political savoy (my personal opinion and hence 0% weight!). Also being in the big city of the world, will not have any constraints for patient availability. Have no idea on location and safety etc since never been there.
Another key point, how clear your child about doing medicine at this point (though understand it is hard to know and it may change). The reason for that is, if decided to pursue then nothing to worry. But if plans change, then very well s/he could have gone to a better school and better major in order to have a better career to make a living (which is critical, though it may be hard to drive these soft points). The point if got BS/MD in NU or CWRU or UR, later changes so be it. But changing decisions later from Hofstra or OU or Drexel or Howard, may put hurdles before they recover from the lost ground. GL.

@Roentgen - Thanks for Hofstra info. Hofstra popped on our radar after they emailed application fees waiver.

@srk2017, do you know how good their non-loan based financial aid is for students?

Based on the data from 1 student, it is pretty good. Think it was $20-25k merit aid.
