Do you guys thinking getting into an impacted major like EECS as a transfer from another UC is near impossible? I’ve finished all my required prereqs and all but one recommended prereq, but I’m still feeling extremely doubtful of my chances.
No, it is done frequently. Berkeley is the least likely to do UC-UC in general, but that doesn’t mean it doesn’t happen, because I’ve seen it time and again, even in impacted majors. You didn’t mention your GPA. So I guess that is the missing key.
I think my GPA is close to 4 although I’m not sure exactly, I’d need to calculate it myself. I received an A- in a film class I took in high school and in a writing class my freshmen year, but apart from those two I’ve been doing well in all my other classes.
I was just reviewing my application to see if I could view my GPA, and I realized I made two minor mistakes. The first one is that I said my film class was 4 units (which it was, but my school is on the semester system, so I forgot to convert it to 2.66), and the second was I wrote one of the 3 unit classes I’m currently taking this semester as a 4 unit class. Should I make this a priority and try to call them to fix it or just leave it as it is?
I just calculated my GPA and I realize that keeping the intro to film as a 4 unit class results in a cumulate GPA of 3.96, whereas correcting it to 2.66 units bumps it up to 3.97.
OMG, that line made my day.
Anyway, it’s not going to make a difference, but I guess you should send a heads up to show good faith. Doesn’t the latter class just auto-populate the units (assuming its from a CCC)?
Hi everybody! I am a freshman majoring in Computer Science in UIUC. Berkeley has always been my dream school.I nearly finish the prerequisites for my major, most of courses i got A.I want to transfer in Computer Science in college of Letters&Science. Is it very hard? I am so worried now, I will apply next year.
@lindyk8 Thank you!!
@yaoxiaosui1995 UC Berkeley admits by divisions, and L&S CS is under Mathematical & Physical Sciences, which had an admit rate of 30.3% last year. I have suspicions that the admit rate for CS itself is not quite so high, considering how impacted and popular it is. I can’t see them admitting a large amount of CS transfers if there aren’t even that many slots to fill. I remember CS having an admit rate of 13% when it was an independent major, and on last year’s thread there were a few 3.8+ GPAs that were rejected.
I can’t stress enough that this is almost entirely speculation. Admissions for individual majors fluctuate drastically, and the high GPAs might have been missing something important, so there’s a significant chance that I’m completely wrong. I’m pessimistic by nature, so take that as you will haha (I’m applying for CS as well).
And since you have good grades and your pre-reqs done, you’ll have a good chance of getting in!
I went on a campus tour during my Spring break. They admission office said that they admit more community college students. Since they have most 3.8 plus GPA, I also need 3.8?
Has anyone gotten a regents invitation yet?
Berkeley doesn’t do a regents invite for transfers. They simply notify you if you got it about two weeks after acceptance.
I will agree that Berkeley is well known for its grade deflation, so it’s okay if you don’t have the same high GPA you had when you were in CC.
Besides, a high GPA only matters if you’re applying to professional/grad schools. Other than that, no one cares about your GPA after graduating.
How to be a competitive applicant as an out state transfer to Berkeley. I was so worried because some people told me it is very hard to get in since I am from illinois.
Posting on behalf of my boyfriend (he doesn’t use this site).
Major: Mechanical Engineering
GPA: 4.0 in M.E. (caveat: he did the transfer work for a humanities degree many years ago, but did not pursue it; his GPA from that is a 3.6, and if you average all of his grades, he has a 3.8).
School: California-based community college
IGETC: N/A
In Progress: He has one math and one engineering class required by Berkeley in progress
Extra Curriculars: Math, Physics and Chemistry tutor, Chemistry Club
Volunteering: Rebuilt homes after Katrina, helped migrants for 3 years
He’s a 30 year old first time college student. His sister attended UCB, as did I, and we’re both rooting for him and anxiously awaiting decisions!
I’m curious if UCB ever admits transfers who dont have all of their major pre requisites finished? I am a stats major with a relatively low gpa 3.5, I am from Sacramento so I have been completing the pre reqs for UCD because I figure I had a much better chance there than at UCB. The prereqs are different. UC Davis requires 2 computer science courses and UCB requires Calc 3 and differential equations. The courseload is pretty intense because I was also completing the IGETC so I just couldn’t figure a way to complete both sets of pre reqs for both universities.
However, I still applied for UCB because a transfer representative told me that because Statistics is not a very popular major even with a 3.5 I had a good shot at getting in. At that time I thought the pre reqs would be the same as UCD. But they are not, so I havent taken differential equations and it will not be completed before Fall 2015, I am also taking calc 3 this Summer- so that is 2 pre reqs that will not be completed by the end of this semester. I have pretty much decided that Im not getting in, but curious if anyone knows of situations where they have taken transfers who were missing 1 or 2 major pre reqs.
Berkeley does not consider transfers who are missing any prereqs ever unless they are not offered at your CCC or a CCC a few miles away.
@reygun good luck to your boyfriend! Sounds like he is a great candidate.
I am also 30 and in college, the struggle is real lol-- especially if you have kids!
That is what I thought
@statrans Good luck to you as well! I’ve watched him flip his life on its head and live on the poverty line for almost 2 years to get this done (I can’t begin to imagine how much harder it is with kids, which I’m sure will factor into how your GPA is viewed).
Regarding missing pre-requisites: you should call the transfer center at UCB to confirm, but pre-requisites are non-negotiable unless you have an extreme circumstance that prevented you from doing it (such as the course being cancelled during your last semester due to low enrollment, etc).
Did anyone else who applied for the Leadership Award @ Berkeley get an email just now about their application status?
What is the Leadership Award? Did you have to apply to it or was it something the school gave out to select applicants? Also, does not applying to it hurt or improve your chances of admission?
