Major: Undeclared social sciences
UC GPA: 4.1
Act: 31
I felt my essays were really good and my counselor thought they were extremely compelling and well written. Good luck to everyone!

when do results come out

Hi all. Current UC Davis student that was on the waitlist 2 years ago. Feel free to ask me any questions you might have; I’ll try my best to answer.
Although the school says acceptances will start going out on May 1st, it is a rough estimate. During my year, the first acceptances were sent out on May 5th. They tend to be sent out in waves depending on your major with a week between waves. If my memory serves me correctly, it was the school of biological sciences first, and I think psychology majors were towards the end. I also remember no college confidential user that was CS was accepted.

The last acceptances from the wailist during my year were for some reason VERY LATE. As in, many transfers were getting accepted before the last high school seniors got their acceptances. I believe this was in mid to late June. However, at that point, most acceptances had already been sent out.
Keep in mind this isn’t guaranteed to happen. but it is a possibility. I wish you all good luck.

@Panduhr what major did you get waitlist under? And do you know any biochemistry majors that were waitlisted?

@Panduhr would you say a lot of people got accepted off the waitlist?

@davis262736 I was waitlisted under Undeclared Life Sciences which was in one of the first waves. Looking back in the 2020 waitlist thread, it looks like some people under the same major were also accepted in later waves, so if you see someone accepted with the same major and you don’t get an acceptance in that wave, I wouldn’t panic.

I do not personally know of any biochem majors who were on the waitlist in the first place, but keep in mind that not every student on the waitlist is going to be posting on College Confidential. I do personally know a lot of BioSci majors that were accepted, and all CS majors were declined.

@mapletree18 My year there was a pretty large number of students accepted off the waitlist, but unfortunately that is not necessarily an indication of what will occur this year.

You may have heard this before, but basically the university says, “We have 5,000 seats available for the new freshman class.” (I am making up numbers here as I don’t know the actual statistics.) They know not everyone who is sent the initial acceptance letter will SIR, so they have statistically come up with a number of acceptances to send out above the number of seats available, let’s say, 15,000. The university tries their best to match the number of students they BELIEVE will accept with the actual number of seats available.

Sometimes they overshoot it, sometimes they undershoot it, and sometimes they get it near perfect. That is why there are years where no one is accepted off the waitlist, lots of students are accepted, or only a few get off the waitlist. It all depends on how accurate they were in their prediction.
Unfortunately the admissions office will keep their lips sealed with this sort of information. You can call for more general questions, but otherwise they will probably say that they do not know. During my year they even gave out contradicting information.

My son was waitlisted and I have a question a bit off topic - Can you bring a car to Davis if you live in a freshman dorm?

This whole waitlist thing has me frustrated. My daughter has already gone to an event for those accepted in her major at another college to which she was accepted. She has received information about testing for math and science, orientation, etc., all for a school she is hoping not to attend because she wants to go to Davis.
Meanwhile, what information are the students on the waitlist at Davis missing out on? Housing registration? Events for those admitted into their major? Important information?

@2022Fall the website says residents of the dorms may not have a car on campus and aren’t eligible to receive a parking permit.

@momofNASAnerd I’ve been through what your daughter is experiencing, so I apologize for the anxiety that you and your daughter are experiencing. I can assure you that you aren’t missing the most crucial information while on the waitlist though. Here’s my own timeline of events in case you may want to reference it.
May 6th - Accepted off Waitlist
May 13th - SIR Deadline (one week given)
May 25th - Received Email with Information about Math Placement Exam/Orientation (where the bulk of information about the school year is given. Math placement exams are mandatory for all students, but I also took an optional chemistry placement exam.)
Late June (varies on college) - Online Math Placement Exam
Late June to Late July - Orientation Dates (vary depending on college, please let me know if you would like to know approximate dates for each college)

  • (Deadline for applying to an orientation date is 2 weeks before the date or until spaces are full.)

I don’t have an email to check for when housing choices were due, but I believe it was at least a week after being accepted off the waitlist. Probably the only thing your daughter will be missing out on is first picks for people trying to find roommates before the start of the year, but others will also probably get off the waitlist, and many students let the university choose as well.

Thank you, @Panduhr. We’re keeping our fingers crossed, but I know it’s a crapshoot. No way to even know if they have any space available in her major.

Panduhr, it’s nice that you took the time to help people who have been waitlisted.
People who have been waitlisted and get accepted will not miss out on anything important. The school factors that into the equation. The school has extended acceptances to a certain number of qualified applicants and is waiting for their decisions, due May 1st. After that, they will fill spots based on current need which includes class shaping. All of you who have been waitlisted meet the requirements for admission. Some people are admitted from the waitlist every year. Every year is different. Every major is different. Best advice is to treat being waitlisted as a rejection and move on to get ready to attend your favorite school that you have been accepted to. If you get accepted from the UC Davis waitlist and you accept, you will have time to do what is required. There are placement tests. There is an orientation session by college over the summer. There is a roommate match website that gets active over the summer. The Admissions Department is good at communicating with admitted students. You can also contact them directly. For questions about housing and transportation, look at the website. Freshmen are not allowed to have cars on campus.

Can a waitlisted student be accepted as undeclared if there isn’t room in their major?

im just rlly scared because so many people have been committing to uc davis, leaving less spots for us waitlist ppl

Late but did accept waitlist offer kind of lucky considering my stats.

I want to think good essays cuz with these stats im lucky to be on waitlist and prob will accept offer if admitted.

So has everyone submitted their intent to enroll somewhere (not Davis)? Signed up for orientation, filled out the housing request, bought the t-shirt?
My daughter has (except the t-shirt). Just getting use to the fact she might not be accepted to Davis.
