General Comments: I'm lookin at scores from people who were accepted.. starting to look like I got in by the skin of my teeth (what an odd expression). anyways, YAY!!</p>
<p>hi stranger, you didn't get in by the 'skin of your teeth.' you were an easy admit. you have very high sat scores, top 10% good AP's and most importantly, you are hispanic. hispanics, especially puerto ricans and afican americans with those credentials are very hard to find. you may have been desirable geographically also, but that plays less than your hispanic heritage. with those numbers and the urm hook, you may have been in the ed rounds and still may be in the rd rounds, able to get into way more selective schools such as dartmouth, brown, aws. however the deadlines for them may be gone. since you answered "dunno" for hook, i can say that your hs gc sucked. good luck to you.</p>
<p>BlacknBlue is right- I'm not at all surprised that you were accepted. But I want to stress that although having an urm hook never hurts, you didn't need it. You probably would have been accepted without it. Anyone with 1400+ SATs, A- UW GPA in difficult courses, top 10% rank, good essays and recommendations, and artistic talent would probably be accepted. Your 5 on the AP Art is especially impressive.</p>
<p>And, yeah, "skin of your teeth" is a really bizarre expression. It kind of grosses me out.</p>
<p>How do your teeth have skin? I don't understand how that idiom came into being, it makes no sense at all...but then, most idioms aren't supposed to make sense...</p>
<p>I think that's the point or something....that your teeth have no skin, so its even more of a close call....perhaps?</p>
<p>In any case, it's not nearly as sexy as 'the stealing candy from a baby' axiom.</p>
<p>touche </p>
<p>But isn't is supposed to be easy to steal candy from at least that will onyl hurt your conscience, the other one sounds just downright painful.</p>
<p>This is starting to sound like the beginnings of an essay prompt for next year.</p>
<p>BTW, stranger didn't need the URM bump. She can write.</p>
<p>thanks ohio_mom :)</p>
<p>and BlacknBlue, thanks for those encouraging words. i actually applied to brown RD but I'm not expecting much from it.</p>
<p>"skin of your teeth" makes me think a little of the teeth enamel stuff.. i think that wears off when you whiten your teeth. but mostly i just get this image of a slimy kind of film over teeth.. gross.</p>
<p>good luck with brown. uchi and brown are two totally different cultures. i think you'll do well there, i am just surprised that you didn't go ed with brown.</p>
<p>From E. Cobham Brewer 18101897. Dictionary of Phrase and Fable. 1898.</p>
<p>"I am escaped with the skin of my teeth (Job xix. 20). Just escaped, and that is allhaving lost everything."</p>
<p>The origin seems to be biblical.</p>
<p>Congrats stranger, hope to see u there next year</p>
<p>Decision: ACCEPTED </p>
<p>Stats:
SAT: 700 CR 720 M 650 W
SAT IIs: 690 Bio 710 Chem 690 IIC
GPA: 3.82 unweighted, yet sweetened. Taking out all those pathetic band A's and A+'s which everybody gets, it's probably more like a 3.7
Rank: don't know for sure... weighted, ~15%, unweighted, ~25%
Other stats: AP US History, 5 (Note: school distinctly limits number of APs, so even though I have only taken one AP, I am in five AP classes this year, and the classes are far more challenging than the exam.)</p>
<p>Subjective:
Essays: The best I've ever written.
Teacher Recs: I asked two teachers with whom I was particularly close and had known for a long time... I assume they're good.
Counselor Rec: We had a close relationship too... he nearly kissed me when I told him in one of those dean meetings that I wasn't going to make myself crazy over grades... he was the one who really pushed for chicago, too :-)
Hook (if any): I probably fit the "chicago type" well.
Location/Person:
State or Country: New York
School Type: elite public
Ethnicity: White
Gender: female.
Other Factors: EC's-- editor of newspaper, worked a lot in journalism-related fields. Also involved in creative writing.
General Comments: I debated filling this out, considering how little is won by comparing GPA's and SAT scores and the like, but I just wanted to let Chicago hopefuls know that you don't have to have amazing grades or incredible SAT scores for a college to realize that you're worthy of attending.</p>
<p>Do we have to be amazing in general though, because i'd say im pretty sub-par....</p>
<p>I do have great self-esteem though</p>
<p>Decision: ACCEPTED </p>
<p>Stats:
SAT: 740V 670M 710W, ACT: 32
SAT IIs: 740 Lit 730US 680 IIC
GPA: 3.7UW, 4.1W
Rank: 5%
Other stats: AP English Language 5, AP USHistory 5, AP Calculus AB 5, AP US Gov't US 4, AP European History
Subjective:
Essays: "Mind That Does Not Stick" Essay involving Plato's Cave and the way my mind was stuck by not thinking for myself (special note: Ayn Rand). Oh, yeah. And my "Why Chicago?" essay based on the film "Pirates of the Caribbean" -- probably the best thing I've written in a while.
Teacher Recs: good recs from both english and math, so ... balanced.
Counselor Rec: Very Personal, probably because I was in his office every day trying to figure out how I could get into UChicago.
Hook (if any): Probably the fact that I moved my senior year to rural Western Mass. where my stats stood out. In addition, my essays and all my recs (well, the two I was allowed to read) all commented on my love of learning.
Location/Person:
State or Country: Massachusetts, recently from New Albany, Ohio.
School Type: public, small, not highly academic.
Ethnicity: White/Caucasian
Gender: female.
Other Factors: The regional thing, probably important. Most likely would have be deferred/rejected if I had applyed from New Albany along with the other applicants. I dont think that anyone has applied to UChicago from my current school.
General Comments: um ... YAY! Just waiting for my financial aid package -- ahhh.</p>
<p>Please note this statement in KilgoreTrout's post</p>
<p>"Counselor Rec: Very Personal, probably because I was in his office every day trying to figure out how I could get into UChicago."</p>
<p>Getting your GC on your side can be another piece of the admissions puzzle. If you GC is not familiar with UChicago - or the other colleges on your list - start talking with him or her about them this spring. Most public school GC's are very knowledge about the local schools to which the majority of their students apply. Discussing your more exotic schools will give them a chance to get excited about them also. If you do a spring college tour - make an appointment to talk with your GC afterwards ... bring literature and enthusiasm.</p>
<p>Congrats, Kilgore and Amykins!</p>

<p>Counselor Rec: good. very personal
Hook (if any): Letter of Recommendation from my boss - US Senator
State or Country: Maryland
School Type: public, 1900
Ethnicity: Hispanic

Other Factors: Brazilian citiezenship, capitol hill internship, did well at Harvard Summer School - also a lot of involvement in speech and debate competition</p>
