@lalady and blah blah
There are two Psych majors at UCI
One is PSB - Psychology and Social Behavior - and the other one is just Psychology. This is the one we call Cog Sci. On your degree the major will be listed as psychology, but there people call it cog sci because it is cognitive science based.
I know for sure that you can switch from cogsci to PSB, and I am pretty sure you can switch the other way around as well since PSB requires a higher gpa to be admitted. They try to push the majority of people interested in counseling into PSB.

Here is the link for cog sci

Any non-TAGers get in after the first batch?

Any UC-to-UC transfers get in?

@tilly thanks!! I had no idea and was actually completely uninterested in UCI because they didn’t have a cogs or neuroscience major. Just applied as psych cause I had few waiver and all pre-reqs complete. Cool! Now I’m a little more excited for my decision to be posted. Thanks again :)

Tillyzinha: what if I want to do counseling, but I need grad school also. I want to do clinical psych and I know i can do that with psb but would it affect me when applying for grad school?

Does anyone know if its hard to change majors after being accepted?

@idizzle: It really depends. For instance you can’t go in as a philosophy major and then decide that you really wanna switch to business or one of the science majors at UCI. But, lets say you wanna switch to something in Social Ecology or Social Sciences that would only require you to take an additional class or two, might be do-able. Long gone are the days when students would tell me that it’s as easy as going to the college you want to change your major to within the university and you just needed to fill out the form declaring a switch in major. What’s your major and what are you trying to switch to?

Also, I heard that you could talk to a counselor at the Transfer Orientation about switching your major nd that they could help you do it at that time.

^^^ Ok thanks. Well I applied as an anthro major at UCI. And I would like to switch(if possible) to a business econ major because I see that it is still in the college of letters&science.

Yeah you’re right, its a lot harder to change majors now a days. This year my bro actually changed from a japanese major at UCLA to business econ which is basically impossible. But he does work study at the Anderson business school and got to know all the people there I guess. lucky ■■■■■■■

I actually applied as a History Major b/c they had an average admit rate of 60%+ over the last 5 years nd was planning to switch to anthro once I got to UCI…I haven’t completed the Java req. nd I’m currently enrolled in Elementary stats, which means that I cant finish the 1 year of stats req and I wouldnt recieve credit if I took stats for business. My current stats professor said that business stats taught at my CC is basically our class except we dont cover the last few chapters of the book.

@ blah blah
I also want to get a PhD in clinical psych. I could spend hours telling you about all the things that I found out since I got into UCI. In essence you could go to graduate school with either one (PSB or cogsci). However they say that the cogsci major is better, not only because it is ranked number 13th in the nation but because it is more neuroscience/cognitive science based. One thing you will figure out once you start researching PhD programs is: 1. Clinical psych PhDs are ridiculously competitive. 2. The majority of the faculty at those schools has an interest in neuroscience. 3. The way they pick graduate students is based on how their research interests match. 4. You will have way more exposure to neuroscientific research being a cogsci major.
Hope it helps!

@earell92: Ooh I see. Cool. I’m actually taking the Java requirement right now. I took the prereq for the Java class over the winter. I only have 1 semester of stats so i won’t have the stats/calc requirement done by transfer.

btw, am I the only one who thinks that its ridiculous that UCI requires calc and java for an anthro major? None of the other UCs do. lol

wow @ dizzle.

ha maybe they just want to prove how complex the HUMAN mind is to be able to process advanced logarithms and stuff.

@idizzle
What do you learn in Java anyways? like I know how to use a computer nd all, but I’ve always thought of Java as being coding and programming, could you clarify? nd btw does anthro also require 6qtrs of a foreign language? b/c history does =/

Nd your right, I applied to UCLA nd you would think that you would need those kinds of ridiculous classes being that UCLA is so competative, but you only need a handful of classes to apply to the history nd anthro majors. When I transfer I think Imma just take a year worth of stats since Im doing really well with it right now.

@earell92: Yeah java is exactly what you say it is. It’s just java programming, designing, writing and coding applications and applets. The prereq class teaches C(which was a paint in the ass IMO). Maybe some comp science majors can explain a little more =]. No UCI doesn’t require any special foreign language requirements. I took 2 semesters of German for the hell of it.

@dizzle
Is the pre-req like an intro to computers or what? nd For someone with no knowledge of coding, how difficult would you say learing Java is? (I swear, Java is gonna become my new stats class…grrr! >,<) once at UCI, I’d just be taking upper div. anthro classes tho, right? well those plus electives to get the degree…I haven’t really looked into what classes to take once I transfer and that worries me a lil 8O

^^ Yeah its an intro class and you learn the C language. Well Java is much easier once you’ve taken the prereq class. It’s still pretty tough for someone like me who has absolutely no background or experience with the stuff. But you’ll catch on. It sucks because my class is full of CS majors so everyone in there already knows Java or had previous experience with it. Oh well, I just have to tough it out for this semester and I’m done.

whats the link to uci’s facebook?

@earell92 do history majors have an average admit rate at only UCI with 60%+? Or at all UC’s? just curious I’m a history major too :)
