***Official UIUC Class of 2019 Applicant Thread***

These UIUC Mails are killing me

@JANSAT2400 80%

@JANSAT2400‌ same Stats (Y) applied for electrical :stuck_out_tongue:

Is Math + CS at LAS just as competitive as CS in ENG? If not, how much easier is Math+ CS?

PS-UIUC is my top choice, I’ll commit within minutes if i get in. I’m really freaking out :frowning:

I had sent in SAT, Subject SAT, and AP scores to UIUC. I talked with admissions and they said they don’t have Subject SAT on file. Since they don’t require Subject SAT, even if you send it, they will not file it with application. Has anyone know about this?

I read somewhere last year that if you send in Subject Scores and Recommendations they shred them, and they very clearly tell you not to send them. One place to put them is in the extracurricular/awards section. I think my son did that. The fact that they don’t even want transcripts (until you accept your offer) tells us that they want to deal with as little paperwork as possible. Unfortunately, that makes it like a factory.

Does anyone know if they will send an acceptance letter if you get in? ahhh I’m so nervous. good luck everyone :slight_smile:

@srparent15‌ Thanks. But somehow they keep the AP score on file, though it is not required for admission. That is what surprises me.

Lots of students self-study and take AP exams, particularly if a subject they are interested in is not offered at their high school. I wonder if they look at the AP scores to see if that is the case.

@meriks Oh really? :smile: Thats a good chance :open_mouth:
@iliveinmumbai : All the best :stuck_out_tongue:

Apparently, last year, the top 100 rejected applicants for CS@UIUC had an average of 34 on the ACT.

^ Given that the average ACT was 32 (all CS) or 34 (CS Eng), even if half the admitted students had perfect ACT, many had lower than the average. How does one define ‘top’?

@nagintapls‌ source ?

And I wanted to ask, except the whole ‘holistic admissions thing’ how much do scores matter for UIUC ?
I have heard both sides of the story.

  • large state school, more emphasis on scores
  • another friend of mine who was admitted last year to CS, told me - make your Essays top.

So I’m a little confused.Also I have a 32 on ACT with a 36-M and I’m applying for CS too.
What do you guys think ?

I read about the 34 ACT on reddit. The thread is called “CS Acceptance Rate?” from about nine months ago.

@takanuva‌ Not really sure how they define “top” but someone last year heard this from an admissions officer at a visit.

@PCMguy‌ Yeah, I don’t have an official source. Someone heard from an admissions officer last year. I saw it last year on CC and also on Reddit recently.

Scores definitely matter, but you won’t get in on the strength of them alone. ECs, essays, and GPA are still important.

@takanuva‌

The average ACT for all CS was 32.3 for freshman entering in 2013, from the CS website. It went up a lot for 2014 entering freshman, supposedly >34. I doubt there is a 2 point ACT gap between CS ENG and CS LAS students.

The quote is from last year’s CS Town Hall meeting. Someone relayed it on Reddit and frankly it was ambiguous. “Top” was in reference to some way they rank applicants.

ACT is not the only way they rank students. Many students with lower ACT scores will be offered admission over student with higher scores but weaker academic records. According to a student rep at last week’s SITE event, they rejected some with 36 ACT scores last year.

@nat97xo‌ I understand, but this shows the great amount of people with high test scores + incredible ECs, essays , etc…

@nagintapls‌ I would say that a great GPA OR test scores + relevant ECs would help a lot. Obviously, having all three is best. But if you’re showing interest in your future area of study and have proven yourself academically, I don’t think they would disregard you due to “weak” test scores.

One of the higher-ups at UIUC Admissions visited my school last year and really emphasized that this is a holistic process. I don’t think she was lying. Obviously, your numbers have to be decently up to par. But if everything is great and then you have a “low” GPA or “low” test scores, I don’t think you’re automatically out of the running.
