Other Factors:
General Comments/Congratulations/Venting/Commiserations, etc: Sad. I really want to do econ at chicago. It looks like deferral is mostly just a soft rejection this year, though. i will update them in a month or so with what I’ve been up to and my community college grades (which, hopefully, should be all A’s, to make up for my 3.5 UW)

Decision: Accepted

Objective:[ul]
[] SAT I (breakdown): 2290; 2 800s and a 690 math

[] Essays: My Common App essay was excellent. My Why Chicago essay was also pretty good, but the find x one was just okay. I didn’t do the optional essay.
[] Teacher Recommendation: I had 2, both from teachers I knew well. I read one, and it was just astounding.
[] Counselor Rec: Really good. My counselor and I have spent a lot of time together, just talking about life in general in addition to college.
[] Additional Rec: I haven’t read it, but I assume it was good. I know the teacher well, got an A in her class, and I want to major in her subject area.
[] Interview: Didn’t do one
[/ul]
Other[ul]
[] State (if domestic applicant): IL
[] Country (if international applicant):
[] School Type: public, magnet
[] Ethnicity: white
[] Gender: female
[] Income Bracket: I’m middle class, not wealthy, but not impoverished either.
[] Hooks (URM, first generation college, etc.):[/ul] none…
Reflection[ul]
[] Strengths: essay, recommendations, test scores
[] Weaknesses: GPA (perhaps) and ECs
[] Why you think you were accepted/deferred: They supposedly put a lot of weight on the essays, and I spent a lot of time crafting mine so that they sounded just right. My teachers also put a lot of effort into their letters of recommendation, so I know they painted me in a positive light.
[li] Where else were you accepted/deferred:[/ul] Loyola Chicago (accepted), all my others are RD[/li]General Comments: Congrats to everyone else who got in!

[li] Volunteer/Community service:[/ul] Suicide prevention, Teen court
[/li]

Writing (Write a brief description and Rate Quality on 1-10 Scale; 10 as Best):[ul]
[] Essays (Include Subjects):
[li] Common App Main: About tough family situation and heart surgery, with an overarching theme of my refusal to let others’ screw ups dictate my life (8.5)[/li][] EC Short Answer: teen court…meeting people from different backgrounds takes me out of my element and teaches me to expect the unexpected (7)
[] Extended essay(which topic): Two types of people- Chinese philosophy and oreos. It’s a long story but it was really cool. If anyone wants to see please message me (9)
[] Optional Essay: Just listed books I’ve read in the last year, plays I’ve gone to, stuff like that (not really a rate type of thing)
[li] Why Chicago: About Chicago being a “sanctuary for thinkers” and my personal struggle and acceptance with coming to terms with being one (7)
[/li]

[] Other:[/ul]

[] Interview: Didn’t interview

Other[ul]
[] Date Submitted App: Around October 20?
[] State (if domestic applicant):FL

[] Ethnicity: Listed as Native American but since not enrolled I am generally counted as being white
[] Gender: Female
[] Income Bracket: High
[] Hooks (URM, first generation college, etc.):[/ul] First generation and writing

Reflection[ul]
[] Strengths: Writing, Test scores (generally), first generation
[] Weaknesses: Grades, counted as white
[] Why you think you were accepted/deferred/rejected: I really don’t know and don’t care too much. Ask the admissions officer if you’re curious
[] What would you have done differently?:[/ul] Nothing. This is me. If they don’t like it, that’s their mistake, not my problem. And somewhere better for me will (does) really want me for exactly who I am.
Other Factors:
General Comments/Congratulations/Venting/Commiserations, etc: Not as upset as I imagined I’d be. But I view the process more holistically than most, and in truth I’m grateful that I’m not likely to end up somewhere that won’t really be a fit.

I wish everyone the best of luck and although I doubt I’ll be seeing you at Chicago, I wish you all TONS of luck with anything and everything in your college process. And if anyone’s having trouble dealing with rejection/deferral, please message me. I feel like an expert by now, from counseling myself and all my friends. lol

Decision: Accepted

Objective:[ul]
[] SAT I superscore (breakdown): 2220 (730 CR, 710 M, 780 W)
[] ACT (breakdown): N/A
[] ACT superscore (breakdown): N/A
[] SAT II: 770 Literature, 680 U.S. History (Took it before taking the second half of my US history class, DERP.)
[] Weighted GPA: 4.806 (out of 4.0…still not sure how that works! I believe my unweighted is 3.806. My school’s grading system is very odd.)
[] Rank (percentile if rank is unavailable): Top 10%, possibly top 5% (class size: 100)
[] AP (place score in parentheses): N/A (school offers only one AP prior to senior year)
[] IB (place score in parentheses): N/A
[] Senior Year Course Load: AP English, AP Spanish, AP Calculus, AP US History, AP Physics, Religion
[] Major Awards (USAMO, Intel etc.): National Hispanic Scholar, National Merit (Commended) And I doubt this counts, but I won 1st place at a statewide Latin poetry recital competition at the advanced level. Metamorphoses WOOO \m/[/ul]

Subjective:[ul]
[] Extracurriculars: Not awful, but nowhere near up to par. President of Italian Club (2 years), Student mentor (2 years), physics league (1 year), math league (4 years), academic challenge team (1 year), school play (1 year) literary publication member (1 year)…one or two other tiny things.
[] Job/Work Experience: N/A…I mean, I worked as a grocery cashier for four days once. :stuck_out_tongue:
[li] Volunteer/Community service: 100+ hours between a local animal shelter and ushering at a theater.[/ul]
[/li]

Writing (Write a brief description and Rate Quality on 1-10 Scale; 10 as Best):[ul]
[] Common App Main: About the Iranian revolution of ’09, why it affected me on a personal level and what I did to assist the protestors. The topic itself could be more interesting, but I guess the writing is good, so…8/10?
[] EC Short Answer: About volunteering at the shelter…not my best. 5-6/10.
[] Extended essay (which topic): Find X – very creative, in my opinion (although maybe someone else had the same idea, haha!) I wrote as if I was x, chronicling my struggle towards finding an identity in life. It was risky, and always could’ve been better, but I was pleased with it. 9/10.
[] Optional Essay: Didn’t stick to any one thing, wrote about all my different unusual favorites – favorite monarch, favorite architectural style, odd things like that. I had fun with it. 8/10.
[] Why Chicago: SO GENERIC. SO. GENERIC. AHHHH. 2/10. At least there weren’t any typos.
[] Teacher Recommendation #1: Very sweet, pretty personal – we have a nice little bond. Nothing amazing, but definitely worked to my advantage. Also mentioned the research paper I wrote on jazz in Nazi Germany.
[] Teacher Recommendation #2: Didn’t get to read it.
[] Counselor Rec: Didn’t get to read it, but she really likes me and seems to have a feel for what makes me tick.
[li] Interview: Pretty awful. I’m awkward enough on my own, but it was by a straight-faced guy who made up questions as we went along, didn’t have anything written down…nada. I tried my best, but it just didn’t go anywhere good. To be perfectly honest, I left that Starbucks convinced I was going to be rejected based on the interview alone.[/ul]
[/li]

Other[ul]
[] Date Submitted App: early October
[] State (if domestic applicant): NJ
[] School Type: Private; Catholic all-girl high school. Sends about one student to the Ivy League per year.
[] Ethnicity: Hispanic (Cuban)
[] Gender: F
[] Income Bracket: $100-120k
[] Hooks (URM, first generation college, etc.): URM, first generation. [/ul]
**Reflection **[ul]
[] Strengths: When I can find my pace, my writing is pretty good, and I have two decent hooks. Even if it didn’t show in my app, I felt like I was the type of student U of C’s looking for.
[] Weaknesses: My short answer and “Why Chicago” were bland. My extracurriculars lack leadership and purpose.
[] Why you think you were accepted/deferred/rejected: I honestly have no idea; admissions is a mystery to me. I feel immensely blessed on a level I can’t even describe.
[li] What would you have done differently?: Picked one or two ECs freshman year and STUCK TO THEM, seeking out leadership roles. Also, taken the time to make my “Why Chicago” essay more personal…I still cringe when I read it. [/ul]
[/li]

General Comments/Congratulations/Venting/Commiserations, etc:
CONGRATULATIONS, GUYS!!! Whether you got in or not, at least that agonizing wait is over. Breathe a sigh of relief! What happens, happens…although not always for a reason. Be proud of who you are, make no apologies, and don’t ever make the mistake of thinking a rejection means you’re not good enough.

I’m off to fret about my RD decisions now. :)

(Note: I filled out nearly all this info before I learned of my decision so that my opinions of my essays, etc. wouldn’t be colored either way. That’s partially why I was so wordy – I was trying to distract myself from the anticipation, hahaha. Hope you’ll forgive me.)

Decision: Accepted

[] Why you think you were accepted/deferred: Who cares? I’m in!
[li] Where else were you accepted/deferred:As of right now, nowhere  [/ul]
[/li]

General Comments:
Future applicants - in your essays, really focus on conveying your passion for a particular thing and emphasize it throughout your application. I think its a huge boost. Also, don’t hugely stress over scores.

To everyone who has been accepted, congrats. To everyone who wasn’t, just remember this: one of my teachers once told me, that in his experience, it was the reaction of a kid that determined the future success of that kid more than what school he / she got into. And you will all get into great schools ;).

Accepted! I will edit this post with my stats later.

Decision: Deferred

Objective:[ul]

[] Teacher Recommendation: probably good
[] Counselor Rec: she didn’t really know me, so I don’t know…
[] Additional Rec:
[] Interview: was, eh, okay. The interviewer himself didn’t really seem to like Chicago and almost seemed like he was convincing me not to go. According to him, souls go there to be crushed. I was unconvinced, but I guess now I won’t find out…
[/ul]
Other[ul]
[] State (if domestic applicant): Maryland
[] Country (if international applicant): USA
[] School Type: extremely competitive public high school

[] Strengths: essays, GPA
[] Weaknesses: SATs, lack of hooks
[] Why you think you were accepted/deferred: probably my SATs
[] Where else were you accepted/deferred: nowhere, yet [/ul]
General Comments: I knew that my SATs were lower than average, but I thought I had everything else…I thought that my GPA reflected that I work hard, even if I’m not brilliant enough for a perfect SAT, and that my essays would reflect that as well, but I guess not. Ah well. Good luck to everyone!
