****Official University of Chicago Fall 2016 Transfer Thread

I’m also CS. If I stay at my current school I’m double majoring in CS and physics, but if I transfer I might drop physics. I actually only applied to UChicago–I’m pretty happy at my current school, but I think I might like being there even better. Do you have an order of preference for the ones on your list? Why are you wanting to transfer?

Did you guys see this
"Attention Transfer Applicants!
Thank you once again for choosing to apply to UChicago. As of today, April 22nd, 2016, the application checklist has been removed from your UChicago Account. Someone from the admissions office will contact you directly if more information is needed during the transfer cycle. If you have any questions about your application materials after this date, please email us at collegeadmissions@uchicago.edu. "
I feel like the decisions are going to be up soon! I am so nervous

I just got off the phone with UChicago admissions.
The man I spoke to said to Br look too much into it (how they took down the check list that is). He said they pretty much know who’s in and who’s not, and to expect decisions in early-mid May.

I’d still be surprised if they come out this week, but hopefully early next week. @PrincessMorales, if you do get a chance to call them let us know what they say.

@PrincessMorales Thanks for the update!

It did seem a little early for them to release the results. Although since they already decided who’s in and who’s not at this point, they’re probably just waiting for all the RD kids to accept or reject.

Good luck to everyone. Hopefully Chicago release its decisions before most of the other private schools

Just out of curiosity…if you guys were to be admitted who would say yes and who wouldn’t and under what circumstances? I imagine most if not all of us applied to other schools…so who would say yes to UChicago no matter what and who wouldn’t?

I guess I’ll go first since I asked…I applied to Brown, Stanford, and Columbia but if Chicago said yes I would accept in a heartbeat because it’s my dream school.

@PrincessMorales I definitely pick UChicago if it accepts me!!!

I only applied to UChicago. I can’t 100% say I’d go if I got accepted. It’s probably 60%-40% in favor of going, at the moment. Depends on a lot of things.

Does anyone know approximate how many transfers are accepted each year and out of approximately how many applicants?

They don’t tend to post those numbers often, but there are a few things that I’ve seen. A year ago, an answered question on the official admissions tumblr mentioned that they tend to offer places to 20-30 transfer students per year. In 2012, apparently 991 applied and 22 were accepted, for a rate of 2.22 percent. It’s likely similar now or perhaps even lower, as the first year acceptance rate is also dropping.

For folks who are applying for transfer, what is the rationale for transferring? In my mind it would be such a hassle, so I am wondering what motivates people specially because some schools seem to actively discourage it based on this note on their website.

It used to be that you just had to be a good motivated student to get into a top school. Now you have to walk on water, save an endangered species, and solve world hunger to get into the top schools. And still people try. Sometimes I feel my kids are so much more stronger and persistent than I ever was!!

^^VLP: There has to be a clear and compelling reason, in my opinion. It can certainly happen. But you are right, as one who went through it, it is not easy to do.

Yeah around 20-40 spots are given usually…
I’ll call admissions tomorrow and try to find out what’s going on.

@VeryLuckyParent, I think the answer for that question is likely different for each person. For some, it’s a matter of wanting to leave their current school–for academic reasons (too hard, not challenging enough), social, campus atmosphere, size of school, etc. And the schools they’re trying to transfer into are ones that have whatever their current school lacks. For others, it’s not about getting /out/ of their current school, but rather /into/ a specific school for whatever reason. Could be that they didn’t get into their dream school as a freshman, or they’ve realized over the year at their current school that they’d rather be somewhere else, or they want something specific (location, program, etc.) that another school has to offer.

There’s plenty of reasons that a student might want to switch to another school after one year. And while it may be a hassle, for some people it might be worth the extra work to transfer, if the alternative is to be stuck for three more years in a place they don’t want to be. As a transfer applicant, it definitely helps to have a clear picture of what you’re missing in your current institution and what you’d hope to gain somewhere else–and it helps if you can make those reasons specific for each school you apply to.

It is certainly harder, and rather discouraging given acceptance ratings and the attention given to transfer students. It’s also harder for other reasons–trying to hide that you’re applying to transfer from people at your current school, making plans for the next year at your school knowing that you might have to change all of them, feeling like you’re the only one who’s still not completely settled at a college. For me, the application for UChicago was due during my midterm week, and if we get the decisions next week, that’ll be during my finals. Which is pretty stressful. But again, if it’s what you want, then it’s worth the hassle.

I don’t know, just my thoughts on it.

@PrincessMorales, what are you planning to ask them?

@Vesperan I completely agree with you!! Sometimes I just don’t know what I want to do anymore because for me
like I have a lot of best friends at my current school already, I don’t really want to go. But in terms of academics and competitiveness of my school, I may not get to where I want to go so bad for my graduate study. And thinking about having to make new friends or going to class at a new school with awkwardness just freaks me out!

I just got of the phone with admissions again…So most freshman actually replied already so they have a rough idea of how many transfer spots they can offer but won’t specify how many. But based on last year and previous years they accepted roughly 20-30 spots so it’s pretty competitive either way.
Admissions will be releasing most decisions all at once, but some may take a while to process so you may or may not receive your decision a little late. There is a very small amount of people who are waitlisted but spots will be made available to them based on a rolling basis.
He also said that if you are waitlisted, and if you really want to attend, you can talk to your admission officer. Although there is no appeal process for transfers, if you really want to attend you could definetly try negotiating with your regional officer.
However if you are denied, there is no such thing as “negotiating” with admissions, so once your denied it is a final decision.
