Reflection
Strengths: APs and GPA.
Weaknesses: SATs
Why you think you were accepted/waitlisted/rejected: GPA and course rigor
Where else were you accepted/waitlisted/rejected: Accepted into UGA, Emory, NYU. Denied at Washington Uni. in St. Louis
General Comments:
UVA is pretty cool, I guess. The only real reason I applied is because I heard of its prestige. I have plans on visiting and it I like what I see, I’ll probably end up attending. If I don’t, my other two options are UGA and Emory University. I can see myself at any of the three schools (although I must admit that I have a predilection for UGA).

Very, very sad student in my house. Looking at these stats, I honestly can’t figure out why she was declined. Her GPA, test scores, ECs, LRs, essays, etc were all top notch; more than competitive with what I’ve seen here. I guess we’ll never know and that’s so frustrating. It’s going to be hard to move on but I’m sure she’ll eventually commit to someplace wonderful. This is an awful time of year.

Seeing some of these stats makes me punch my wall. It’s ridiculous. I would love to know how this process works…

Decision: Accepted

Objective:[ul]
[] SAT I: 2400 (one sitting)
[] ACT: 36 (one sitting)
[] SAT II: Math Level 2 – 800, Chemistry - 800
[] Unweighted GPA (out of 4.0): 4.0
[] Rank: 1/425
[] AP: 5’s on Chemistry, Biology, Calculus AB, and Psychology (logistically impossible to take AP course until junior year)
[] Senior Year Course Load: AP Physics, Calculus II (took at community college), AP Statistics (online), AP Human Geography, AP US Government and Politics, AP English Language, AP English Literature, Spanish IV (administrative regulations precluded my taking AP Spanish), and PE (required)
[] Awards: USNCO, NMSF, NHRP, state awards in English and Chemistry
[/ul]Subjective:[ul]
[] Extracurriculars: Piano improvisation and performance (both paid and unpaid; significant time commitment); Mock Trial; Scholastic Bowl; Peer Tutoring; Peer Leadership; WYSE Academic Team; JETS Engineering Team; Social Studies Club; Various volunteering engagements; Various leadership positions and awards in the previous activities
[] Summer Activities: Vanderbilt twice, music composition program, community college
[] Essays: Difficult to self-evaluate; they were written hastily, though
[] Teacher Recommendations: Haven’t seen them
[] Counselor Rec: Haven’t seen it
[/ul]Other[ul]
[] Applied for Financial Aid?: Yes
[] Intended Major: Undecided
[] State: Illinois
[] Country: US (domestic applicant)
[] School Type: Semi-competitive public (A few NMSF’s each year; about a dozen students with ACT scores 33+)
[] Ethnicity: 3/4 White non-Hispanic; 1/4 Hispanic
[] Gender: Male
[/ul]Reflection[ul]
[] Strengths: Perfect test scores, rigorous curriculum (under the circumstances), GPA, rank, well-roundedness
[] Weaknesses: Dearth of major awards, don’t attend feeder high school, no unusually compelling extracurricular activities, should have self-studied some AP tests
[/ul]General Comments: Best wishes to all.

Received a likely letter.

Everyone, you have to remember that they have a hollisitic approach to admissions! It’s not just about your SAT scores!

VAMom11, I’m sorry about your situation. I’m sure your daughter will end up in a great place. As I mentioned earlier, I was speaking to a dad 2 weeks ago who mentioned that his son didn’t get into UVa but ended up going to Yale. Admissions is a strange science.

theman44, I know this is frustrating. The only thing that I can say is that UVA’s process (which is the same with many other schools) is holistic. Yes, SATs are important, but they’re not the end all, be all for UVa, because frankly, there are brilliant students who aren’t necessarily the best test-takers. (For example, take one of my best friends, who is now an award-winning poetry professor here in NYC. She went to UVa undergrad and got her MFA from Brown. Brilliant woman, horrible in math.) That’s why your grades, essays, recommendations, and the courses you take are soooo important. Here in CC, we don’t see the essays people have written. We don’t know what their recommendations have mentioned about each applicant, their trials and tribulations, as well as any information about their character and school work, which might have been the tipping point for that student to get in.

BTW, I have to say that it is EXTREMELY important that you make sure your recommendations are from people who really know you and like you. I had a friend who was applying to college and asked another friend to write her recommendation. She didn’t get into any of her top choices even though she did very well in school. Well, I found out later after we had all graduated that her “friend” wrote her a nasty recommendation saying everything horrible about her. Jeez, some friend.

To all those waitlisted, there’s still a chance. For those who didn’t get in, you’ll most likely end up somewhere great and will laugh at this moment in 20 years.

Decision: Accepted

Objective:[ul]

[] Summer Activities: volunteering, went to France last summer for an art study abroad program, used to do volleyball camp all the time so I had minimal time. 8|
[] Essays: flippin sweet. I wrote about getting lost in random neighborhoods for the getting lost essay. I don’t remember writing the others. Common app essay was modeled after a facebook page and discussed how very little facebook pages really tell you about a person. I used myself as an example of what it doesn’t reveal about character, values, upbringing, personality, interests, etc.
[] Teacher Recommendation: Didn’t read it (school policy). I imagine it was flippin sweet.
[] Counselor Rec: See above.
[] Additional Rec: See above.
[] Interview: n/a
[/ul]Other[ul]

[] Weaknesses: So many. Beginning with my whiteness ending with my lack of ECs.
[] Why you think you were accepted/waitlisted/rejected: I’m not sure.

Waitlisted: Northwestern, Boston College, Notre Dame… :c

[/ul]General Comments:
I’m happy but still very disappointed with my overall college decisions list. Oh well. C’est la vie.

Decision: Accepted

Objective:[ul]
[] SAT I (breakdown): 2210: CR-700; W-710; M-800
[] ACT: don’t know
[] SAT II: Math II: 800; Chem: 750
[] Unweighted GPA (out of 4.0): 3.60

[] Major Awards (USAMO, Intel etc.): Came close to qualifying AIME, but then again, I didn’t practise enough at all
[/ul]Subjective:[ul]
[] Extracurriculars (place leadership in parenthesis): Piano, statewide recognition on many occasions
[] Volunteer/Community service: Organised 2 benefit concerts and taught for 2 weeks in a rural area
[] Summer Activities: Constructive and not academic? Piano
[] Essays: Core of my CommonApp was the work from last year, and the UVA-specific essay may have been slightly shabby…
[] Teacher Recommendation: One from Chem, who may have been overloaded with recommendations but nevertheless likely wrote a good letter. One from my Gov teacher who I have had before; I had been active in his classes
[] Counselor Rec: Better than average, because of close relationship
[] Interview: NO
[/ul]Other[ul]
[] State (if domestic applicant): US-VA (that means in-state)
[] School Type: Medium Public (~1800)
[] Ethnicity: Chinese
[] Gender: M

[] Hooks (URM, first generation college, etc.): None
[/ul]Reflection[ul]
[] Strengths: Devotion to ExC’s, and not having weak test scores
[] Weaknesses: GPA
[] Why you think you were accepted/waitlisted/rejected: Since UVA uses objective data as the primary basis to judge in-state applicants, most likely it would have been this. The exC’s and CommonApp essays would certainly have cemented it
[li] Where else were you accepted/waitlisted/rejected: Accepted Carnegie Mellon and VTech[/li][/ul]General Comments: Was surprised, as my GPA is quite mediocre…
