Official USC 2013 Transfer Thread

hello all. trying again this year! nearly got in last year, had a nice talk with the chair of the program and feeling pretty good about my chances and how i’ve improved since last year’s application filing period.

anyone else going for animation?

Hi everyone, im kinda new to this site and have found great information about transfer tips and all from here and wanted to post something of my own and get some feedback. I currently go a community college (third year) in CA and my GPA is 2.7 (very terrible i know :() and trying to apply to USC Marshall for Fall 2013. I dont really have any EC’s but i do work a lot and me and brother have started up something online recently too (if that helps). PLEASE i need some help or tips to finding out what my very slim chances are!!! :(

Congrats on everyone who got accepted and goodluck to everyone applying! :)

@satinderchhokar it depends on how many “W” you get. having 1 or 2 you probably shouldn’t stress to much about it but if it goes beyond that it may start to look back on your application.

Hey Guys!

I’m a student at a CSU. I’m applying to transfer to the Communications major in Fall 2013. I currently have a 3.0 gpa. But its not an upward trend, it fluctuated a lot. I know its not very good :frowning: However, I have a ton of great ECs and I know my teachers are going to write really good letters of recommendations (one is my communications teacher and I got an A in her class). I’m still debating on whether I should apply because of my gpa. How competitive is the communications major? Any help would be greatly appreciated!!

it seems as though this thread has died… so sad such great information on here too

@lalove06
dont get discouraged from a low GPA. if you’re able to bring it up by the time you apply and stuff you should have some chance, just like me. my GPA is 2.7 which is way worse than yours… but ive read a lot of the other posts and if you just have an upward trend on your GPA (i guess from now) you’ll have a chance plus a really well written essay hahahah. but if i dont get in i’ll probably just bring up my GPA more and reapply the next year.
Unfortunately, i don’t know anything about the communications major  but good luck! i really hope USC is willing to let in some low GPA student :(

Also I was wondering how helpful is called USC and their admissions department? because i had a friend who transferred there a year ago, and he told me that even the admissions department was kinda dumb at giving advice and what not.

Really need some input…

So I messed up this semester and right now I am getting a C in my Calc 2 honors course. If I get an A on the final, it seems that I can still get a B. I have a 4.0 GPA with 16 units done (taking another 16 now), so this C will really hurt. Worse so because its my first math course at a CC and I will be applying as Computer Engineering/Computer Science.

I really need to decide whether to drop now and take a W or try to get a B.

I feel that if I get a C, my GPA will plummet to ~3.67 and my chances of getting in will also plummet. I was going to take multivariable calc next semester, but maybe I should drop and re take?

@uscacceptme, I have contacted my admissions counselor and she has been very helpful. If you have any questions about your application, I would suggest contacting him or her :)

@yakooza well i think if you’re really confident that you’ll be able to pull through with an A on the final then by all means go for it. but if you’re a little skeptical, then it’d just be best to drop with a W. Because one W won’t hurt your application as much as a C especially since it’ll bring down your GPA heavily. the admission don’t mind 1 or maybe even 2 W’s but anymore after that it’ll start looking bad.

@uscco2016 oh awesome! did you contact her through e-mail or phone? and do you think you’d be willing to send me her contact as well? sorry i’m kind of new and searching for that stuff and kinda lost hahaha.

@uscco2016 oh sorry! i thought you were talking about the USC admission department hahahah scratched out what i previously said i didn’t read through your post carefully enough :(

Thanks for the suggestion.

I feel like even if I get a C, I can get away with it by saying in the application that it was mostly the result of a fluke on a midterm and that I had also been busy occupying myself with studying for JPL internship.

Its also an honors course so perhaps they will look at the C as more of being a B in a regular course.

I guess I can take the W but then I have to retake the course, which puts me behind one semester of math. It seems like a silly thing to do just for the sake of a letter grade.

@yakooza that is true too well the decision is primarily up to you. getting just one C isn’t too bad too but you i guess you gotta see how it reflects upon your GPA. but like you said you can always explain it in the application :)

@uscacceptme- Nope! You read that correctly. You can find and contact your USC admission counselor through this page: https://camel2.usc.edu/admceebsearch/ugappfindcounselor.aspx</a>
Just type in your school and city  And you can email or call him or her, I believe!

@uscco2016 ohhh thank you so much! i dont know how people find these kinds of stuff hahhah but HAPPY THANKSGIVING!!

Hi everyone!

So I am currently attending a CSU and am working under the Trojan Transfer Plan. I’m registering for spring semester and I have completed most of the GE categories, Diversity category, and math category. However, I am concerned about the writing requirement. At my school the writing equivalent to WRIT140 at USC is english 300 which is reserved as an upper level writing requirement mostly for juniors and seniors. I have passed both the AP Eng Lit and AP Eng Comp exams in high school which my school gave me credit for, but I’m not sure if I should take the english 300 class being I am technically a first year but have a sophomore status because of my AP credits. I know it is required for admission but should I take it?? Should I ask my counselor?

Any feedback???

I believe while USC may give you credit for the AP english tests, they do not fulfill the English requirement. So you still have to take them.

Check with your counselor though.

Hey guys.

I transferred to USC from another top-50 university this past year. If you have any specific questions you want to ask me personally, pm me any time. I want to help all of you through this process. Good Luck!

@allysunn1 Your chances are great! I’m a USC student, transferred in this fall with a 3.72 GPA and the same amount of extracurricular activities as you. I also wasn’t the greatest student in HS. Typically anyone with a 3.7+ GPA is considered competitive… I know Annenberg is a little bit more competitive. Just as long as your application is strong and mentions a specific reason why USC’s communications program interests you, you should be fine. Good luck!

GOOD LUCK EVERYONE!

@djpsu2015 awesome thanks so much i will pm you hopefully soon but i gotta have 15 posts first…LOL
