Official USC 2013 Transfer Thread

hey guys i have a 2.7 GPA and a junior in CCC with 65+ units and i was wondering if I should try to apply this year or maybe wait another year to raise my GPA?
any advice??

@uscacceptme

Marshall is pretty tough to get into nowadays. Don’t let that discourage you at all. I’m gonna pass some advice along that my Econ professor told me “you’ll never know until you apply.” You’re best would be to apply and accept that the worst possible answer would be “no thank you.” So fight on and show them why USC needs you at their school. You can only be yourself. So apply and if they don’t accept you raise your gpa and get involved in programs that would benefit you in the long run. Hope this helps

@Lilyyyyy

Seriously thank you so much! you just made my day. :slight_smile: i am actually in the process of writing my personal statement as we speak!
are you in Annenberg as well?
how was your personal statement?

@demidly thank you so much! awesome advice :slight_smile: i just hope that USC is able to look past my GPA and read onto my essay because i think my essays are pretty solid. Do you by any chance know if USC doesn’t look at applications below a certain GPA?

I was wondering how important is the ACT/SAT for sophomore transfers?

uscacceptme- I would apply! I believe they look at all essays and they play a huge role in who gets selected. Im sure thats why a lot of people who have 4.0’s get rejected. If your essay is dry and they cant get a feel of who you really are then more than likely you will not be accepted.

Maybe you can even go in undecided and then transfer into Marshall? Im dont know how that really works but im sure someone knows the answer.

Btw is it just me or does this thread seem a little dead? Its already almost December!

@rocio94 it depends on how many units you have. if you have 30+ units they typically dont look at your H.S. transcript or SAT/ACT score but if you have less than 30 units they would look at it. and how important is it, i don’t really know the answer but i’m guess it’s pretty important? hahahahah since everything together is what determines your acceptance or not.

@ngarcia3 hahah thank you! and yeah i think i am going to apply from all the advice i’ve gotten from other people :slight_smile: but if you have more than 60 units then its required that you decided on a major and i’ve got 65+ :confused:
and yeah it is really dead… i’m hoping it picks up soon because this thread can provide a great deal of information, advice and in my case hope :)

By having more than 60 units & having to decide on a major, does that mean 60 transferable units?

@SatinderChhokar
I think it would make sense for them to be 60 transferable units since you can have more than say 40 units, but only half of them be transferable. The other 20 wouldn’t count once you’re at USC.
You might want to ask admissions about that

Since ACT/SAT is relatively important for sophomore transfers(with <30units completed), does anyone know the average score of a usc sophomore transfer? I’m guessing 29-33? like freshman right?

Hi can anyone chance me. I want to transfer into USC Marshall next fall (Junior Transfer). Im currently attending a decent SUNY school and will have a 3.6 after this semester. I did poorly my first semester of college due to family problems (passing away/separation of parents), but I have received a 3.8 and soon to be 4.0 in the proceeding semesters. I also received direct admission into my current university’s b-school. Many of the courses I have taken match up with USCs program, including accounting (which I am doing extremely well in-highest grade out of all accounting classes). I have had multiple internships, my most recent was in NYC/trading industry (High-Frequency Trading). This summer I will be taking an internship in Japan with a well known networking company. I also have legacy at the Marshall School of Business - dad went to grad school there, now at a top IB. Does anyone know if legacy has any pull with transfers? Please let me know what you guys think.

ronaldot- Your chances seem very good. I got into Marshall with a 3.5/3.6. Still not quite sure which one it was. lol

Just make sure you write a good essay that can give them insight about who you are as a person. They used an example of a student writing about how an event with their grandfather impacted them. They said it was beautifully written but they knew more about the grandfather than the actual student.

Do you guys think completing 3/4 of the GE requirements along with the Diversity requirement is as good as or looks better than completing 4/4 of the GE requirements & not the diversity? Due to scheduling conflicts next semester I might not be able to complete all 4 GE’s so I was thinking about competing 3 & the Diversity.

Hey Guys! So excited to apply to USC this year! Good luck to everyone!

Just one question. Do you guys know where we list our winter classes on the common app? Do we just place them along with our fall classes?

Hey everybody!
USC is my dream school and I went and toured it for transfer day and it was even better than I had hoped. Everyone was a lot nicer than I had originally thought.
I am applying to Anneberg for a journalism degree from a CA junior college.

I am a little nervous because my GPA is a little low but I have pretty good extra curriculars. It is just hard because for the Journalism program the maximum units allowed to transfer is 36 (3 semesters) and I will probably have a 3.2 if I can’t get my math grade up. I have been following the core requirements and have all of them done.

I’ve spent 4 months living in south america, doing a program that is exactly like the peace core but for high school students, I wrote and gave my high school graduation speech, I’ve spoken at a symposium, had 2 social media internships, I was a disabled student assitant and I work for the city. I did absolutely horrible in high school and I have 2 C’s on my college transcript that make me nervous.

Do you think those will over ride my bad grades?

It is just so up in the air and I have to write a really good essay. I’m going to be nervous for a whole year.

@beachpony i actually had the same question as you. couldn’t really find a place to put my winter classes

So any sophomore transfer tips?

How does a 3.45-3.51 gpa fare for a psychology major (dornsife)?
