Can you transfer to USC as a senior? Or do they only allow you to transfer in junior year like UC schools.

Hi guys!
I’m a student at a community college and this is my second time applying to be a transfer! I went to a private art college last year and got rejected while trying to transfer so maybe ill have better luck this year. My major is International Studies.
I know its early, but has anyone else started their common app? Let me know!

Transferring in as a Sophomore can be just as difficult as transferring in as a Junior, or less. If you have only completed one year of college and/or are under 30 credit units the school will most likely go back and look at your high school records and test scores. So if you feel fairly comfortable in how High school went, you should have a decent shot. However, if that was not the case then the more college credits you have that transfer with high letter grades, the better your chances are.

You can transfer as a senior, but the school will only accept a max of 64 units. So this will virtually drop your class standing back Junior.

@sedulousAeris

So do you think it would be better to apply during the spring semester of junior year? Since you can’t exceed 64 credits anyway?

@laredja

Are you currently a Sophomore or Junior?

If you are applying as a Sophomore currently you should have around 58-64 units by the end of spring depending on how many courses you have taken. In this case you would be just fine applying now. If you are a Junior currently then you’ll be in a similar boat like me. I will have well over 64 units, not all of these will transfer due to articulation and credit limit though. At this point its better to have more credits so most core curriculum courses will be done with by the time you get to USC.

USC likes to see a good number of Core general education classes out of the way for incoming Juniors.

So if you are a Sophomore its the perfect time to apply now. If you are Junior its still a good time to apply, just keep in mind you could be wasting money on some of those classes.

no i didn’t apply in high school but i had a 3.98 weighted and 1970. don’t know if usc cares about that though

@SedulousAeris, my GPA in HS was incredibly low, probably around a 3.1 UW and 3.4 W so I didn’t apply to USC as a freshman applicant. However I did have class rigor (7 APs) and a solid SAT score (2160). If I have more than 30 units and a solid college GPA (3.8+), will my high school grades matter then?

Also, I see that USC requires a Writing class to be able to be considered for admission. At my school (Cal Poly SLO), I am not currently enrolled in the freshman english class (Writing and Rhetoric) because my school accepts 3s from AP tests and my 3 from AP Lang fulfills this requirement. However, I should take this class anyway, if I plan to transfer to USC, correct?

Hi I’m currently enrolled in CSUN as an Undergraduate. I just started my 3rd semester and currently have a ~3.6 GPA. I was planning on transferring to USC by junior year, that is be enrolled in USC Fall 2014. I was wondering if anyone could give me advice on what I should do. Also when I should apply (I was thinking Fall 2013 if i wanted to transfer by Fall 2014).

Start ur application right now its due feb 2, speak with your councilor if you have no clue go to the usc site and read trough the transfer brochure what’s your major?

Yes if you have more than the 30 units they will not really look at your High school records, that being said (For anyone) if you have 3.8 or higher GPA for this year it shows an improvement over you high school term. So start working on your application now. For USC its more than just grades, which for a lot of people is a good thing. Do a good job on your supplements and essays, show them who you truly are and why you deserve to go there, and they will take notice.

I am familiar with the English requirement, however I’m not sure if they accept 3’s on APs. For that I would check with a USC counselor. Shoot your District Advisor an email, they are really speedy in response.

I second what (fdominguez) is saying. Start working on your application now. You have a good GPA and if you do good this year in school it will raise your Cumulative GPA up even higher.

Hello! If anyone recognizes me, I’ve been on last year’s thread and the one before that. I’m a junior entering into CC. I’ve applied to USC for the past two years plus high school so I’d be happy to give anyone advice and I will most likely be needing advice. A bit about me:
- Went to CC first year of college
- Transferred to Davis second year
- Attending another CC

POOR GPA thanks to the lovely science classes at Davis. I first was gonna be a pharmacist but I had a HORRIBLE experience at Davis so I decided to do Business. I have completed all of USC’s GE’s, Math, Writing, and I am taking Accounting 2 in the Fall. I have around a 2.9 but I’ll be looking to boost that up.

Question: Since I’ll have over 64 units when I apply, can I still apply? And will they take only the first 64 or will they pick and choose? Because I want to show improvement in my classes that I’m taking since I’ve just been taking science courses which hurt my gpa a LOT. Please let me know!

@iloveasianguys: While I know they only let you transfer over a max of 64 units, I’m not sure how they determine which ones to take and which to leave behind. It could depend on the courses themselves. I would suggest contacting an academic counselor at USC to clear things up. Don’t forget to bump up that GPA!

By the way, I love giving constructive feedback on application essays, so anyone here on CC needs another proofreading eye, feel free to message it to me and I’ll give it a read!

If you don’t have a paper written yet and don’t know where to start, we can toss around ideas for your paper as well!

Believe me, I love helping prospective applicants with their essays, and I can’t wait to help you with yours. :)

Hello everyone! Since mostly all of you are very knowledgeable about USC and its transfer requirements can you please help me and answer my concerns and give me your advice? I would greatly appreciate it! Please search my thread: What are the requirements a CC student must meet in order to apply to USC for Soph.Yr

@Sleepy3192 Hello! I am interested in transferring to USC from CC. I wonder if you can look into my thread “What are the requirements a CC student must meet in order to apply to USC for Soph.Yr” since a lot of my questions and concerns are there. Please help me as much as you can i would really appreciate it! :)

SilverRex is awesome. He was a big help last year.

FYI, I had more than 64 units when I transferred into USC. They pretty much jettison anything from your transcript that they don’t think will be useful in meeting requirements. It’s not like they stop at the 64th unit and reject anything else afterwards.

Hey guys. I just started at a CC as a freshman this August and I was wondering, If I applied to USC for fall of 2014, would they look at my 1st semester grades and more than likely ask me for a SGR? Because I’m pretty sure that I wouldn’t get accepted with only one semester of grades, even if it was a 4.0, but I feel like if I have 2 semesters of grades under my belt that I stand a much better chance. I’m applying to Annenberg btw.

@RandonNewGuy: Thank you for the kind words!

@NCXfer: Since you would be trying to transfer very early, they would definitely ask for an SGR, especially if your high school grades weren’t great. If you’re fresh out of high school, remember that if you have more than 30 units before you transfer in, they don’t even consider your high school grades.

Go ahead and apply this semester anyway. Put forth your best efforts to write a great essay, build up your extracurricular activities and resume, make your grades stellar, and see what happens! The worst they can do is say no to your application, to which you would apply again the following year. If you are persistent, they will notice. I was rejected by USC out of high school before I was accepted as a junior transfer last year.

hey @silverrex just wanted to throw my situation out to you. I had a horribly GPA in high school and graduated with a 1.9 GPA. I will be applying with 51 credits (but transferring with 65ish) and will probably have about a 3.7 gpa when applying. Do you think my high school grades will hold me back from getting accepted?

@cccblues… I did not even graduate from high school and I still managed to get into USC (similar transfer GPA to yours). I think I said this elsewhere, but trends matter.

@fdominguez @SedulousAeris
Ok thanks, I’ll get started on the application. My major is Electrical Engineering.
