Official USC 2014 Transfer Thread

Also another question, USC lists a core requirement as 3 years of strong grades in math or Intermediate Algebra in college. If you go over 30 credits, do they still look at these math grades? Are the math grades in high school really important to the admission decision?

I’m really happy to find out about this thread, lots of useful info on here ^__^

@hellonyan

“You are expected to have earned strong grades in
at least three years of
high school mathematics, including Advanced Algebra (Algebra II), or Intermediate Algebra at the college level with a grade of C or better.
Majors in the sciences,
social sciences, business, architecture and engineering programs at USC require specific mathematics courses and achievement beyond
this level.”

What I get from this right of the bat is you better have a good grade at least in int algebra/algebra 2.
To my understanding since intermediate algebra/algebra 2 was taken by some people in high school they will look in your high school record to check that the minimum math requirement was taken and passed with a good grade unless you take it in college again since intermediate algebra is a minimum requirement at least in my articulation agreement.

So to answer your question IMHO if you have not taken intermediate algebra in college or any other math class in college their immediate reaction would be to look at your high school records to check how you did overall including intermediate algebra/algebra 2 so make up for it in college if you didn’t do so well in high school cuz I believe it will be the same even if you have taken 30+ units and no math classes. As long as you have taken it and did good you should be alright. Keep in mind if you are in a major like biz, you will have to tale biz calc.

@fodominguez Thank you so much, that clarifies a lot. I will enroll in the Algebra II to make sure I fulfill the prerequisite.

Another question, I was reading the stats for USC Transfer Decisions thread of 2012. Many had core requirements in progress for their spring quarters. Does this mean that even though we submit our applications before Feb 1st, it is ok to still have core classes in progress for spring? Will USC request spring grades then make a decision?

If I apply for freshman admission out of high school and don’t get in, does it lower or in any way negatively affect my chances of getting in as a transfer?

I am only basing this answer with an answer I got from a UCBerkeley HAAS Business School counselor so it may not apply but it is what I go by.

He told me to make sure that my curriculum displayed the best out of me when applying but he also told me not to leave more than two requirements for the spring to play it safe or else I would be risking but you do what you gotta do. Its what I go by because that makes a lot of sense but then again this is not Berkeley, not even a UC.

Those are my .02 but anybody else is welcome to correct me

Since I am barely applying too I am not 100% sure about the spring grades and their decisions. What I have seen from the 2013 transfer decisions thread there are 3 scenarios. You get accepted earliest by may few days before spring semester is over, you get rejected or you get asked to submit spring grades and then you wait for the decision.

@uscmaybe

I think its the opposite, it shows how determined you are to get what you think you deserve, it may even give you an edge if you know how to express the desire and give the right reasons in your second personal statement.
But then again keep your hopes up!

The Calculus that I need to take for Marshall requires me to go through two courses of math first if I go to Alg II first. I think I’ll have to leave this one to spring. However I can complete all the other requirements in fall and winter. I’m just worried whether or not this will negatively affect my admission decision. I saw many in the stats group who had prerequisites still in progress in spring, and they received SGR’s. Would you say SGR’s are a bad sign?

@hellonyan your admission is Contingent upon completion of that math course. If its not done by fall or in progress and completed by the end of spring marshall will reject you. They specifically stats this on there site.

@stanx89 Got it. I was just wondering if it was alright to list it as planned for spring. Thank you for the confirmation!

How are we supposed to submit our HS transcripts? For freshman admissions they have a place to fill out your HS counselor’s info so he can submit it but nothing for transfers.

Is anyone on this thread applying for the second time?

Hi there! I am a first time USC transfer applicant with a 2.5 GPA I know that sounds terrible but my family and I ran into some issues this year and I had to take a lot of time to focus on working full time as well as trying to balance my full time school schedule. Needless to say that was not the most brilliant idea ever! I am looking to go into the Thornton School of Music as a pop music major and I was wondering if anyone had any extra curricular ideas to make me a little more well rounded and appealing during the application process!
Cheers!

Hello once more! Thanks for all those that responded to my question.

I have another question regarding the commonapp, for anyone that is currently attending a 4 year university or more specifically, a CSU, what are we supposed do for the “Invite Registrar” section, under “Assign Recommenders”?

if anyone has any questions please message me.

Hey, guys! I want to go to USC so badly, but I’m scared I wont get in! I have a few questions:

(1) Does USC frown upon withdrawals?
(2) How does USC feel about Cs and Ds?
(3) Please chance me:
-3.52 GPA from a local community college (out of state)
-About 300 hours in community service
-Upward trend (which they supposedly like)
-Three Cs, one D, two withdrawals (reason: I was dealing with depression and stress), but I am (there is no IF) going to make straight As this semester in six classes, which should bump my GPA to a 3.52.
-I will most likely apply to Dornsife-psychology and human biology/enviornmental studies
(5) Do they take into consideration spring semester grades?

(4) Any advice? PLEASE HELP! I want to attend this school so badly!

It really sucks being OOS and kinda wanting to go to usc

Why do you say that? Do USC favor or give priority to in-state applicants?

No they don’t give priority to instate students they’re a private school. More students from California CC’s get in because more apply not many oos apply for transfer admission to SC. They review all applicants the same. 23% of the admissions to SC for the fall 2012 semester were oos.

If you call an admissions counselor they will verify what I said for you.

Okay cool. Thanks. Well, we’re in the same boat. The next few months are going to be so nerve wrecking!

No. It’s just easier to transfer credits. Also, don’t you have to take the writing class before you transfer into USC?
