General Comments:

Where else were you accepted/denied?

I have been waiting 2 months

I was accepted I applied Nov 27th and was accepted a week ago

Can you post your stats, if you don’t mind?

Applied in early October. Just submitted most recent SAT scores. OASIS just keeps saying “We have not reached our final decision.”

Is this normal?

SAT: CR 580/ Math 500/ Writing 610
GPA: 3.75 (unweighted)

They said they don’t want essays/letters of recommendation unless I am deferred. When does that usually happen? According to the Initial Eligibility Grid, I am in the color code for “Admit for Summer 2013”.

Thoughts?

^ Be patient…phone them after holiday to make sure they have everything and ask for timeframe on decision. They’re looking for a way to admit you if they haven’t rejected you! Good luck.

Accepted on December 8th. Received the usf directors award and paying in state tuition because I am from Barbados. Berryman, I think you should relax a little, check again on January 2nd. When the office of admission opens (: sure you’ll get in.

@Berryman: I’ve been waiting the same time with similar Stats. I guess the are looking for a way to get us in. I think they look more at SAT/ACT scores because everyone I know with like unweighted 3.5 or weighted 4.2 got in with their 1800 SAT. I have a 4.7 gpa so idk what’s up

Oh and the timeframe they told me was 6-8 weeks. Its wayy past that for me

Patience has never been my strength! Thanks for the replies–it’s encouraging to know I’m not alone. I look forward to reading and sharing the good news of our acceptances! I just hope it’s SOON.

Decision: Accepted

Reflection

Strengths: SAT
Weaknesses: GPA, bad in math
Why you think you were accepted/denied: According to their table, she was in the accept with college readiness factors. Hers were having taken 8 science classes (because of her magnet which was agriscience), extra foreign language years, high writing SAT, and 4 AP classes.

General Comments:

Where else were you accepted/denied? FIU, FGCU, UCF, Eckerd (scholarship), FIT (scholarship), U of Arizona (scholarship), still waiting on UF, Clemson, Miami.

Congrats to all who got accepted!
I’m starting to think USF puts ALOT of weight on standardized scores

They are the only school I’ve seen that puts online EXACTLY how they consider applications. This grid (the second page is for fall). http://usfweb2.usf.edu/Admissions/pdf/counselor-grid.pdf</a> It’s a combination of SAT + GPA + strength of schedule. For example, my daughter’s SAT + GPA (1350 + 3.5 weighted) put her in the mint green “accept with 2 or more academic success factors” area. That’s where strength of schedule came in, the fact that she’d taken the extra science, foreign language and AP classes. Had she had slightly higher grades, she’d have gotten in without those.

But yeah, I think ALL the Florida State schools are in love with standardized test scores. DD has a friend who has a higher GPA, APs, great activities but an SAT (CR and M) under 1000. She was rejected from FSU on the basis of test score alone (She was basically told that you can’t get in there with less than 1,000) and got accepted to UCF only for summer and after a long wait, while DD got accepted there almost instantaneously. It’s really not fair, but I guess they think it makes them look good if they have high SATs.

This grid gives me the impression they don’t care at all about extracurriculars.

Good luck to you. I bet you get in soon. I’ve heard they take a lot of people after UF decisions come out.

Thank you! Oh wow February seems far away.
Yeah so basically taking all these AP classes/ college classes, having leadership roles, plus many long term EC, 4.8 GPA is for nothing if you have low SAT’s. it’s really not fair because your GPA shows how hard one worked throughout high school. Not many people are good test takers or have test anxiety and it really sucks USF look more into SAT scores

I don’t think the table shows that they look MORE at SAT. Taking AP classes affects both your USF weighted GPA (because they give extra weight to AP classes) and the “academic success factors” (because they award one for AP classes, also for taking extra maths, sciences, and foreign languages over 2). College classes with good grades are also an ASF.

Fwiw, I don’t think my DD got in solely because of her SAT score. She took a rigorous course load. The chorus class this year was her only nonacademic class (required to take a fine art) other than PE. I mentioned the 8 science classes (Earth/Space in 8th grade, Bio, chem, AP Environmental Science, plus honors agriscience or honors biotechnology every year from 9-12 grade). She took 3 years of German but took a summer immersion program in order to skip a year of German to get to AP this year (She didn’t have time to take 4 years of German due to her magnet classes). All her classes have been honors, gifted/honors or AP except this year’s math class. And, as I said, her school is one of the most rigorous in the state. The state universities do seem to know about that school. So, while I understand that you’re upset that you haven’t gotten your letter, I don’t think anyone was accepted JUST on their SAT score.

If the 4.8 is the USF weighted, rather than your school’s weighted (which is usually higher – DD has a 4.3 the way her school calculates it), I’m sure you’ll get in. DD’s friend with the 960 did get in to UCF, and I get the impression UCF and USF are relatively equal. BUt yeah, I don’t think either school gives a darn about activities (and my daughter has the Girl Scout Gold Award, so it is hard for me to admit that too). Of the state schools, only UF seems to – but mostly to distinguish between kids who already have perfect grades and SAT scores, not to bump up students who are deficient in either area. I know a kid with an 800 math SAT who didn’t get in to UF last year!
