Official UVA 2017 RD Discussion Thread

My understanding is that you have no obligation to accept an offer of admission if you accept a place on the waitlist. (Even if another college said that, they would have no way to enforce it).

As will probably be described by Dean J on her admissions blog, UVa has multilple wait lists. There is an-state and an OOS list for each college - such as engineering, nursing, etc. In most years, the total wait list was large. They do accept people from the wait list, but the numbers vary from year to year, and from college to college, depending upon how many people accept admission.

Some years large numbers of people are selected from the wait list, and other years few. One year the yield of students who accept admission may be an unusually high percentage, so admissions admits fewer students the next year, but then use the wait list more than the year before. In other words, you can’t rely exactly on what happened last year, because they adjust from year to year.

If someone definitely decides they want to attend another college, they should let UVa know ASAP so that people can be notified from the wait list.

College waiting lists are not binding. I guess this isn’t explained because it’d be a horrible policy! A waiting list student gets an offer and a couple days to think about it. If they need aid, the aid office packages them and then they have a couple days to think about it.

The waiting list page has specific numbers of offers going back about five or six years.

BTW, the link to SIS is on the top of the main UVA homepage. :)

Thanks so much to Dean J for being part of this board. My son has applied to a number of schools and this is the only one where someone from admissions takes the time to post and clarify things.

I agree, @charlieschm, when someone definitely decides they want to attend another college, they should let UVa (and all others universities too) know ASAP so that people can be notified from the wait list. With students applying to so many schools now - seems so unfair that they hold an acceptance spot at so many schools.

Accepted, OOS

Thanks a lot, charlieschm and Dean J.

D was deferred EA and now Waitlisted. Ugh, so much indecision…it would have been a tough call for her but she has good choices so its time to move on. It was nice getting to know more about UVA…good luck to all who will be attending.
