[/ul]

Other Factors:

General Comments & Advice:
I didn’t know what to expect. I hadn’t thought that much about UVA since I wasn’t expecting a response until later in the month. It took me by surprise when a friend posted his acceptance. I’m just happy to be into somewhere as great as UVA

Decision: Accepted to SEAS

** Objective: **
SAT I (breakdown): 710 CR + 800 M + 800 W = 2310 composite (superscored, two sittings, 2090 first sitting, 2300 second sitting)
ACT: N/A
SAT II (if submitted): 760 Math, 740 → 790 Physics (didn’t study for math/wish I had AP physics, qq)
Unweighted GPA (out of 4.0): 3.90 (3.99 excluding HS credit middle school classes), 4.43 weighted (4.53 excluding HS credit middle school classes).
Rank (percentile if rank is unavailable): N/A (but ~2/380… not first because of, again, middle school).
AP (place score in parenthesis): AP US Government - 4
IB (place score in parenthesis): IB Math SL - 7, IB Chemistry SL - 4 (don’t think these were sent).
Senior Year Course Load: Multivariable Calculus, Linear Algebra, AP Statistics, IB Physics SL II, IB Biology HL II, Computer Science, IB English HL II, IB History HL II
Major Awards (USAMO, Intel etc.): Nothing all that special. AMC School Winner, Science Olympiad Medal, NMSC, Jefferson Scholarship Nomination

** Subjective: **
Extracurriculars (place leadership in parenthesis): Science Olympiad (VP, 3 years), Puzzle Club (VP/Founder, 1 year), Math Honor Society (3 years), National Honor Society (2 years), Student Government (1 year), FBLA (2 years), Varsity Math Team (3 years), Science National Honor Society (1 year), Table Tennis (4 years, recreational).
Job/Work Experience: SEAP Internship (8 weeks, liquid crystal research, $3k stipend awarded)
Volunteer/Community service: Math Honor Society tutoring, 2 weeks volunteer at a laboratory (basically an unpaid internship/shadowing).
Essays: Sort of trivial what I talked about… common app essay about diversity (Indian food on an American holiday), cell phone batteries for project essay, parents/roots → that I use their stories for determination in working hard for world I come from essay.
Teacher Recommendation: Should have been at least decent. One from math teacher of calculus/other advanced topics for three years, another from English teacher that gave an A to two people last year (I was one of them).
Counselor Rec: No idea, but says he writes good recommendations for all of his students.
Additional Rec: N/A
Interview: N/A

** Other **
Applied for Financial Aid?: No
Intended Major: Electrical Engineering (also now considering a double major in economics, but that wasn’t part of my app…)
State (if domestic applicant): Virginia
Country (if international applicant): N/A
School Type: Public
Ethnicity: White/Asian (Indian)
Gender: Male
Income Bracket: 250k+
Hooks (URM, first generation college, research, etc.): Nothing really.

** Reflection **
Strengths: General grades, test scores, research internship
Weaknesses: Perhaps seemingly lacking any real involvement in extracurriculars (probably should have done a sport), essays probably could have been better (I’m terrible at choosing topics, don’t know what’s appealing, don’t know what to talk about exactly).
Why you think you were accepted/waitlisted/rejected: relatively good test scores, relatively good grades, research internship, in-state, OK essays, OK extracurricular involvement.
Where else you were accepted/waitlisted/rejected: Rejected - Stanford (REA); Have yet to hear from - MIT, Princeton, Harvard, Columbia, Carnegie Mellon, Cornell, Dartmouth, UC Berkeley, UCLA, Virginia Tech, Georgia Tech, Penn State, RPI, W&M.

**General Comments: **I was sort of expecting an acceptance considering my grades/scores/jefferson scholar nomination; I almost considered UVA a safety, but thought that not applying elsewhere would be a bit cocky of me. Although I’m not a huge fan of this state, UVA seems like a good place for me to study, especially considering that it is close by and cheaper than similar schools. I have a couple of friends who will probably attend too, and feel as though it will be a better/more fun atmosphere for me than a grind-it-out, hardcore engineering school like MIT (which I applied to, but don’t really want to attend and probably won’t get in anyway). If I end up getting the Rodman scholar distinction, there is a high probability of me attending UVA because then I wouldn’t have to fulfill area requirements which is a big plus for me. I still have to hear back from a lot of schools, so I’ll see if I get in anywhere else too.

**Decision: Accepted **

[] Counselor Rec: Barely knew counselor til this year because counselor assignments were moved around last year, but became relatively close this year, and was prob a great rec. She even wrote a separate rec for Princeton to emphasize my desire to go there.
[] Teacher Recs: One from Calc teacher, directed plays I was on stage crew for, almost certainly a great rec. Second from Econ/Euro teacher, sponsors like 1/3 of the clubs I’m in, definitely a stellar rec.

[]Summer Activities: Experimental Economics Research; (Irish dance and speech and debate carry into the Summer as well)
[]Essays: Common Application (8/10)–Not “pass around the office” good, but generally engaging and honest, about a leadership experience when testifying in front of the legislature; UVA CAS Supplement (9.5/10)–Really good I thought! []Weaknesses: Common app essay wasn’t great, and I’m unhooked.
[]Why you think you were accepted/waitlisted/rejected: If I had to venture a guess, it was the Irish dance… It’s a lot rarer as an activity than most of the activities you stumble across. And I’m towards the top end of the application pool academically.

[] Where else were you accepted/waitlisted/rejected: Deferred Brown

[/ul]General Comments:
With my low-ish SAT scores, I was pretty surprised. I guess they actually do look at you as a whole and not just your stats. To those reading this, I guess you should just make sure that you’re pretty well rounded in all your ECs and Sports and whatever, theyre looking for someone who’d fit into their campus and not be a student who’d sit in their room and study all day and not participate in the school community.

For those posting ACT scores, are those your highest composite or a superscore? (I know that UVA doesn’t officially superscore the ACT, but they kind of do by looking at the highest sub score)

To all of you underclassmen out there, all I can give you advice on is just do your best and take the hardest classes you can at your school. Take at least 3 subject tests and do WELL on them. Do well on your SAT/ACT. Do well in school. Get that 4.0+. Don’t just participate in extracurricular activities, but take leadership positions. Be well-rounded. Good luck :)

I thought I had about a 75% shot from our Naviance, but I know it’s getting tougher and tougher to get in OOS. It’s nice to have such a wonderful school on my list before RD results come out.
