Hey everyone, had a doubt about AP credit. Say you take a test in a sub which isn’t required for your major. Do you still get credit towards the general requirements of your degree? Not so familiar with the AP system.
@UmaSridhar , I happen to have attended both UT Austin and UW Seattle many many moons ago. These two are very similar in rankings and prestige, very respected in all the STEM fields. Either one will be great for your daughter’s interested major. They are also similar in terms of huge student population and large classes and TA structure.
Weather-wise, Austin is hot and dry with occasional flooding (if it rains it floods) and tornado; Seattle is wet half a year but mild all year around, with slight chance of earthquake. Again, you win some and lose some, no clear winner.
Indian culture wise, Seattle is the clear winner. Because of presence of high tech companies, especially Amazon and Microsoft, there’s a large Indian/Asian population. You can find plenty of Indian restaurants and shops and dance groups etc.
You can’t really go wrong with either one, so in the end, may just flip a coin.
@Calima Congrats!!
I really like the new direct to college system where you land in a specific area of engineering after you take classes and see what you are skilled at and what you like. You can spend some time exploring more than just one type of engineering - how cool is that! Still you have the benefit of knowing that you are going to graduate in the well regarded UW School of Engineering. The doors are open for you learn for the sake of learning which is a huge plus.
I think the UW direct to Foster system has operated this way for quite some time. Students begin their coursework and discover if they have a knack for Accounting, Supply Chain, Information Systems, etc. Why peg yourself right from the start when you can give them all a try!
Medical schools seem to run on this model as well… learn in a variety of areas for experience and breadth of knowledge and hone in on a specialty as you learn and grow.
Thanks. I will have him keep checking email.
Anyone know when we’ll be hearing back about financial aid?
Daughter notified yesterday about honors via email. OOS applicant.
I emailed them a few days ago about this and they said this:
Incoming freshman awards from our office will be ready in the next 1-2 weeks. Your student will be notified via email to check their MyUW to view their award once they have been awarded.
Thanks a lot @bogeyorpar , really appreciate your inputs.
@Coffeek Hi my d also got the purple and gold for 4
5,500 a year for oos. She loved U of W but it’s just not affordable. She got into her instate schools, UCLA and the other UCs so she will be attending one of those.
Anyone know if Direct-to-major decisions (for nbio specifically) have been released?
did everyone find out about financial aid/scholarship packages already?
I posted a week or so ago (post #1881) about the dilemma my son is in: Accepted OOS but not direct into engineering. He got a full tuition Air Force scholarship (~$160K OOS) that is contingent on him obtaining an engineering degree.
Whether he goes to UW comes down to what his chances are for getting admitted to engineering after sophomore year. If he doesn’t get engineering after sophomore year, he’s on the hook for about $90K with all the stipends and everything else he’ll have to pay back to the Air Force, as well as having to swallow the bitter pill of not being able to obtain an engineering bachelor’s.
There’s a fair amount of info online as to the chances of later admission under the old system (about 40-60% depending on the engineering major) but there’s nothing about the chances under the new DA system which just began this year. The various UW webpages don’t provide any statistics, but the tone is very discouraging, basically saying that if you didn’t get DA and really want engineering, you should pick a different major or attend a different university.
Assuming about half the engineering spots are taken by DA admits, that leaves half the remaining spots to be competed over by whoever didn’t get DA, but the competition should be less since the “best” students were already DA and won’t be in the applicant pool come sophomore year. So does that mean about the same chances, 50% or so? Or better, or worse?
It’s just going to be terribly hard to have to turn down a full scholarship to UW. But to make that decision, my son needs more concrete information upon which to base his decision. If he’s got at least a 50/50 shot of making it into engineering, he’ll probably take the chance and work his butt off to make it happen.
With only about a month left to make the decision, it’s frustrating to be flying blind. Oh, and calls to the department have yielded the same vague and less-than-encouraging answer as on the webpage but no concrete statistics or even ballpark stats on eng admittance chances under the new system. Very nice people who have been very understanding, but not helpful as to actual numbers. Same with the AF cadre at the school. No one seems to know how the new system will impact non-DA students trying to get into engineering later on.
Anybody else heard anything or been able to get any better info on non-DA engineering chances?
Have you filed an admissions appeal with UW to try to get direct to college? There are no actual numbers because this is the first year of the new system. It sounds like he may need to look elsewhere.
@locogringo , if it were my kid and so much money is on the line, I would rather go for a sure Engineer major in another college. According to the instructions when we filed the UW application, if you don’t get Direct to College for Engineering, there’s very little chance you will get into the Engineering school later on. They may reserve some space for transfer students, but virtually close the door for the rest of UW.
Looks like I’m going to UW. I just got waitlisted from UNC-Chapel Hill.
Has anyone not heard back from the Honors program? For those who have, did the decision come through the portal or email?
No word for us on honors, a friend heard results via e-mail.
@huskydawg2123 Honors decisions come via email.
any international who received the acceptance copy letter?
I think we’re leaning towards another university. The money stakes are just too high.
Under the old non-DA system, he was prepared to work hard and get into engineering as his stats are above average for UW admits, and he felt he had a solid chance of getting into engineering. But under the new system, and it being the first year of the new system with no stats to look at, there are just too many unanswered questions. And everything I’m hearing is leading me to believe that if he didn’t get DA, his chances of getting in after sophomore year are much slimmer now under the new system.
Lucky for him, he can take his AF scholarship elsewhere; it’s not connected to a particular school. It’s still full tuition at the other schools he got into, even covering full OOS tuition. Now he’s thinking CU Boulder, CSU, or U of Utah, the other schools he got into, all would be $0 tuition and guaranteed engineering. I’m just worried he won’t feel challenged. UW would have been almost the perfect match. Oh well.
The new DA system this year really threw us a curveball that we weren’t expecting. But that’s the way life is, he’d better get used to it…this is a good life lesson.
My daughter, now a sophomore in HS and with a 3.9 UW GPA like her big brother, really wants to go to UW, and so I’ll be going through this whole thing again in another year and a half. Hopefully by then, we’ll all be a lot more knowledgeable about how this new DA works. Thanks everyone and good luck at UW!
