Can someone give me some insight on life at Vanderbilt. I am an Asian male and don’t want to feel out of place if the southern stereotypes are somewhat true. Also I won’t know anyone there :(. My other option is UNC chapel hill at which I know many people but it is a public school.

@messedupschool No, don’t feel like you won’t fit in. I go to Vanderbilt frequently to visit my friends and everyone there is super nice. Don’t not go there because you feel like you won’t fit in as an Asian male. You’ll make lots of friends and no one will look at you like you’re not from there. If that’s your biggest fear about Vandy, then you shouldn’t be scared at all. :)

Just wanted to say congratulations to the transfer students. my oldest was a transfer after her freshman year (after being wait-listed as a senior, she stuck it out her freshman year at a state school). I thought I’d address a few things I’ve seen in the thread to help alleviate anxiety.
She had an incredible experience as a transfer, they really work on building community and bonding.
She as not been treated as a pariah at any point in any class. She was chosen for research as a sophomore and continued through her junior year.
She is not Greek, and has had an incredible social life…there are 100’s of clubs, service organizations, performing groups, and activities to participate in. She has friends in sororities/fraternities and ones who are not.
Diversity is one of the best things about the campus.
Her classes were MUCH harder and more demanding than her state school… Be prepared for that.
She LOVES her school and has never been happier.

@marianna0725 – I wish you could come to UMich!
It’s an awesome school (from what people say on this forum). I have made lots of awesome friends from the university at the various business conferences I attended – all humble, motivated and passionate about what they’re doing – which is why I am so hard bent on attending UMich! You should definitely consider it strongly. May I know what major do you plan to pursue? :)

@messedupschool I’m an Indian male (I still consider that Asia haha) and I’ve visited the school twice and felt that it was still rather diverse, especially compared to my current school. My only issue is that I am very interested in rushing and will likely join a house, but I’m worried that the fraternities may be a little bit skewed against giving bids to minorities. Any insight on the diversity of the Greek scene?

@banker92 Im a math major with a minor in actuarial science I wish I could go to U mich really, but Umich gave me basically NO money at all/: So it’s impossible for me to attend there. And it seems like Im rejected from Vandy…seems like everyone applied CAS heard yesterday and I didnt /:

fall2014transfer, write directly to the office that oversees Greek life at Vandy and ask for a sophomore in Greek leadership to drop you an email or skype with you. There are committees of upperclassmen who do nothing but work as ambassadors re Greek life and I believe that this interest will be addressed in your orientation period if you choose Vandy. Also a current student on this board with the handle Pancaked I believe is active in Greek life. My Duke son went Greek and altho I disliked a few aspects of what they were up to, I have to concede that Greek life meant a great deal to him and continues to provide him with brotherhood as a graduate. Vandy son went independent and spent a great deal of time with students who were first or second generation Asian Americans but not really alike (mainland China, 2nd gen Filipino, 1st gen Pakistani, 2nd gen Chinese living in Queens–along with two friends who spoke Polish, one who spoke Russian…etc)…
If Greek sounds appealing to you–pursue. best wishes and congrats on your open door.

Thank you @Faline2 I have rushed both semesters at my current school and I believe that Greek life is the right choice for me and will help me get the most ideal college experience that I am looking for, but I didn’t accept any bids here because I was almost certain that I was leaving. I will definitely contact the office, thanks for the advice.
