Official waitlist cal poly slo

jsturavgazn: I do not mean to denigrate Cal Poly or the people who attend there. Trust me when I say that I know Cal Poly is a great school particularly for engineering and archittecture and agricultural majors…I realize a lot of people who apply there have excellent stats and deserve to be admitted there. My point being that in some cases, this year, it will be easier to get into a UC for engineering than for Cal Poly. Also, some of the people with lower stats that were accepted were in engineering. So it is mystifying to me why some with lower stats in engineering got in and some with very high stats got waitlisted or rejected…I have seen a lot of people on these boards admitted with lower than a 1400 SAT store (CR and M) so doubt this is the accurate number…
And, just to be clear, my son applied to UCLA, UC Davis, and Berkeley. We have not heard yet of those decisions, but he has received a “likely letter” from UCLA so we think he is accepted into that School of Engineering. Sadly he will probably not go there as that is our local school and he wants to live farther away from home, which we totally understand.

Guess one of the reasons I’m so pived is that I believe that Cal Poly would have been the best college for my daughter. She is somewhat shy and having her brother around (although neither would ever consider sharing an apartment, sibling rivalry and all) for her first year (his last) would have helped with the transition. Also, while Cal Poly isn’t small, the UC’s tend to be bigger and she may get “lost” there. She is equally adept at the classroom work and also will seek out the hands on stuff. So Cal Poly’s approach to engineering would work well for her. The UC’s tend to be less hands on from what I can see. I know a lot depends on what you push yourself to do, but you get back again to the shy thing.

Oh well, starting to calm down and now we’re waiting to hear from the UC’s. UCSB has said that they will post the acceptances on their web site on the afternoon of March 22.

HPuck35: I totally sympathize with you and your daughter. It sounds like if your daughter is shy, a slightly smaller campus would be the perfect fit for her. On the other hand, sometimes shy people come out of their comfort zone when in a place that stimulates them, and it sounds like she is a very bright girl and will do well no matter where she ends up at college. My son attends a big, urban Los Angeles public school with almost 3000 students, and he wants a big school with a lot of activities. So a big university if perfect for him.
From what I can tell, a lot of these kids getting into engineering with lesser stats than your daughter or my son, appllied early decision. It seems like if you had the stats, you were admitted early decision. And I would bet, by the time the early decisions were made, there were not a lot of spots left for the rest of us. Which I guess is fair, since if Cal Poly is really your first choice, and you really want to go there, and you qualify, you should get in. However, I think Cal Poly then should be clearer in its policies and instructions to the rest of us, informing us that if a student does apply regular decision, he/she may not have a good chance of being admitted, even with the necessary stats.
I am sure your daughter will get into UCSB. Are you sure they haven’t posted the admissions yet? I know someone who says they got in already! You might want to check it out now. Good luck!

HI HPuck… We all feel your pain here in our house!! My son a ME major 4.3 gpa top 4% of his class of 1300, 1890 sat, 29 act, Varsity Soccer Player, lots of community service hours, Leadership etc, etc, etc etc, waitlisted. He also has a little sister (who is a sophmore in HS) we would like to see her go to cal poly too. I’m sure your son will get into UCSB. We are looking into Westmont a smaller, private, but very pricey school in SB for our daughter. Looks like we’ll be selling our house in two years! Anyway, we here it is a great school and close to UCSB. I realize my sons sats are little low, but it really angers me to here of the athletes that get into the ME dept, and then have to change their major after a year because they can’t handle the program with sports. Oh well feels good to vent! Mabye our sons will meet in the UCSB ME program. Good luch to you and yours!

HPUCK…OOPs MY BAD I REALIZE NOW YOU SON IS ALREADY IN CAL-POLY. JUST READ BACK POSTS!

Rousse54: I apologize for my misinterpretation. But ur right, it may be easier to get into most uc schools this year because of all the budget cuts. Also, I agree that if it wasn’t for ED I probably wouldn’t have gotten in. I believe that most people didn’t apply ED because it was binding.

Anyways I hope your son gets into all those uc schools! Good luck!

Check UCLA CLASS OF 2014 THREAD!

**I read the whole thread: http://talk.collegeconfidential.com/ucla-2014/879886-acceptances-march-12-2010-5pm-pst.html and it was unclear if this is true or not. The UCLA website did say mid to late March, so you never know. I was thinking it would be later in the month.

I also read this on another thread: “I called the admissions office today and was told the decisions will not be out today; maybe next week or the week after (no set date yet).” Someone else called and got a recording saying that decisions will be out by the end of the month. So, who really knows! **

Check UCLA CLASS OF 2014 THREAD!

2-Leashes… You are probably right who knows? It could all be a hoax? I also heard from several sources that decsions will be posted Mon, March 15, after 5pm. Now I am reading this news. I think it will be very very soon. If my son gets an E-mail today I wil make sure to post the information. Good luck to you!

Check your site

Well, last year one of my best friends was accepted off the waiting list on Cinco de Mayo
He was accepted into material engineering
Point is, I know people shouldn’t be getting their hopes too high, but there is a reason why you guys were put on the waiting list and not rejected =)
Best of luck!

Unfortunately, I don’t have my daughter’s ID or password. Nor do I have access to her email. Are you saying they’re posted on UCLA’s website portal? I thought they sent an email. She’s spending the night at a friend’s house tonight. I would just be curious.

Check your site

2Leashes… Yes you had to log into your UCLA website portal as of 5pm today. That is not to say, that your daughter still might get an E-mail to tell her of her change in admission status. I think, even if she does get an E-mail you will need her information. Good luck. PS my son was so scared to look he would not come to the computer to see. He was rejected:. He has been accepted to ucd, ucsb, and irvine for ME but UCLA was his first choice, We dont know about ucsd or cal yet. GOOD LUCK

2leashes.

You will need to know the following:

Last name

UC ID # (7 digit number that is on her application acknowledgment letter)

Birth date

Place of birth

Here is the link: https://www.admissions.ucla.edu/Decision/Login.aspx

I was rejected at UCLA, but that was my safety school so it didn’t matter to me at all. Cal Poly is my 1st choice.

I was able to get a hold of her. Well, she just got her first non-acceptance (rejected sounds so negative) I think she knew her test scores probably weren’t on par with what they were looking for. But, what the heck–no harm in applying. Also, it would have been more expensive and she would need to take out loans. I have to say, it’s almost a relief. I think she would have done okaaaay with the size of the school, but I’m not sure if she would have been thrilled with the psychology major vs. kinesiology at Cal Poly. I really feel that a hands-on approach to education is much more suitable for her learning style. And maybe not the competitiveness you often see in large, research universities. She wasn’t even going to apply to any UCs, but my husband and I convinced her to “just because”.

I always knew she and Cal Poly were a good match, anyway. I think I secretly hoped she wouldn’t choose UCLA if she had gotten accepted.

Tornados, I didn’t understand when you meant UCLA was your *safety *school. I always thought a “safety” was a sure bet or a school that would be an easy match. You’re still waiting to hear back from Cal Poly, right? I have all my fingers crossed for you, tornados!

how can unweighted GPA surpass 4.0? Isn’t unweighted the 4.0 scale and weighted the 5.0 scale? luvmyson said her son has an unweighted of 4.01 and weighted 4.3 … i have an unweighted 3.912 and weighted 4.55 … doesn’t make any sense haha.

2Leashes I am sorry about your daughter’s rejection at UCLA, but it sounds like you are okay with it. How is she feeling about it? It is always good to have a reach school because you never know…but I am glad that she is in at CPSLO and I know you are happy too!

Hi momofmv~

Oh, she’s fine with it. She never had high expectations, considering it’s one of the most-applied-to schools in the country. And, most have very good test scores. Her SAT Subject test scores were a thorn in her side. I’m glad they’re doing away with them starting in 2012.

Anyway, aside from that, it would have cost more. And, I honestly feel she would do much better with the hands-on learning experiences. In fact, I know she would. She learned so much in Guatemala when she volunteered and really got right in there and helped the disabled or sorted the coffee beans or helped build the stoves for the Maya villagers. I can see that she blooms with the “learn by doing” philosophy. She’s just fortunate she gets As in her lecture-type classes. But, I know she’s not always thrilled with theory or sitting at a desk taking notes. I’m glad she’s learned how to do master that, though. Even Cal Poly isn’t going to be ALL hands-on, especially in the gen. ed. classes.

The ONLY advantage I could have seen at UCLA is more diversity. Oh, okay, the campus looks more like a traditional college, as well. Some gorgeous buildings and landscaping. But other than having the opportunity to attend her dad’s alma mater (his grad school), I can’t see a huge reason to spend more money. And, it’s not cheap to live in LA! :)

It’s the only UC she even considered attending, so I’m so happy she got accepted to Cal Poly.
