Waitlisted. :(

I didn’t write the optional essay, which might have made a difference. Then again, there are accepted people who also didn’t write the essay, so I can’t put it all on that.
I was accepted at Northwestern and Wash U, so I’m not devastated. That being said, however, I probably would have chosen Duke over both of those. I do love Northwestern though, so I will be happy if I end up going.
Still waiting for April 1st, though…

Just curious…how many of you fellow waitlisted people did not write the optional essay? Everyone who was waitlisted/rejected from my school who I’ve talked to so far did not do it. This includes me and two other people (I was waitlisted, and they were rejected). They say that it is “TRULY” optional, but since the admissions officers ARE human, they definitely make subconscious discriminations based on whether applicants write the essay or not.

I don’t even remember if I wrote the optional essay…

I wrote the optional essay but i was still waitlisted… (i thought i had pretty good stats for duke too- 2340 and 34) sorry to dismiss your theory

eagleraych how did you get waitlisted??? a person at my school got a 29 on their ACT and they got in

not at all!!! he’s white

i didn’t get waitlisted, but…

do you think duke waitlists over qualified people?

got waitlisted too. i don’t know about overqualified but i think it doesn’t take a chance with unconventional academic trends (in my instance, a 3.1 with rising trend from a very tough HS and a 2370, six 5s for AP, blah blah)

not at all
im not kidding myself into believing that

Yay, I get to join this party. :/

Yeah, agreed. I don’t think Duke plays the yield game.

Got waitlisted at Duke and Vanderbilt which is fine cause I’m in at UVA and
Virginia Tech as well as UNC-Chapel Hill (OOS). This helps clarify what to do rather
than making the decision harder and more confusing. Still can’t believe the
reject at Davidson but they weren’t even a real consideration since Liberal Arts
is not the right direction and they may have figured that out first.

Would love to get in at Duke or Vanderbilt but right now, not too upset cause there are
other great schools to choose from. I just want to encourage others not to freak out…
figure out your options and go confidently into your future.

Waitlisted at UChicago, Vanderbilt, and Duke.

Waitlisted at Chicago, Northwestern, and Duke.
And I got in at UCLA and Berkeley even though I never wanted to go to a UC, it looks like I may have to…

Waitlisted at Barnard and Duke today… feels a bit awful, not going to lie… I hope April 1 is more positive…

Waitlisted as well… Anyone know how many are waitlisted in total? Or even an approximate at least?

waitlisted as well and it was my first one. A waitlist is SO much better than rejection I got rejected from Amherst fri, and i ddnt even want to go there but it still hurt A LOT and georgetown SFS earlier today which sucked bc that was like at THE top of my list at the beginning of this whole process.

I committed to the wait-list right away i reaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaally like Duke and would def choose it over uchicago which is where i will be going unless there is a miracle on April 1st

There are about 1000 people on the wait-list for the person who asked and I really hope they take a lot off this year. I am talking to my college counselor the minute spring break is over to figure out the letter of interest, update type things

Ah… the waitlist. This is my first WL school though - got rejected from Stanford and was pretty heartbroken about that, but then I got into UNC-CH, UChicago, and Northwestern among others during spring break. I’m not sure I would have gone to Duke over UChicago, so now I don’t know whether or not I should accept the spot on the waitlist. Good luck to everyone though - while it sucks not knowing for sure, at least we know we were qualified for the spot.

EDIT- Additionally, for those inquiring, about 1,000 people are on the waitlist (as jokesbg779 stated) and anywhere from 1 to 200 ultimately get accepted, based on data from previous years. These numbers were in the FAQ for waitlisted students I believe. I think the real bummer here is that you have to make a deposit at another school and possibly lose that if you get into Duke in the end…

At the moment man, the loss of a deposit is the last thing on my mind. How many people do you think will pull out of Duke after getting into various Ivies on the first? Hopefully I will no longer care - as I will be in an Ivy - but give me a rough estimate? How many of the 3400 accepted will get into an Ivy? Then, how many will go to said Ivy?
