[] Ethnicity: white
[] Gender: female
[]Income Bracket: 50-100k

[] Strengths: ranking, course load, essay
[] Weaknesses: my activities and volunteering seem pretty run-of-the-mill compared to some I’ve read about, and my test scores are just average for Wash U
[] Why you think you were accepted/waitlisted/rejected: Looking at everyone else’s posts, Wash U admissions seem very unpredictable! I think it really helped that I applied for the College of Art, which is considerably smaller. I know they say they don’t fulfill quotas for individual majors or change expectations for admissions based on anticipated major, but I think that may have played some role here.
[li] Where else were you accepted/waitlisted/rejected: Baylor (accepted with full tuition scholarship), Rhodes (accepted with partial tuition scholarship), Oklahoma Christian (accepted with full ride scholarship)[/li][/ul]General Comments: Good luck to everyone with the rest of this process!!

Strengths: grades, scores?
Weaknesses: race, no research, maybe too many ECs? I just like to get involved and always stay busy, but they might have thought I was doing them all just to put on my list.
Why you think you were waitlisted: there are so many amazing applicants. also, I have no research experience and I want to enter into a science field. also, washu waitlists a ton of people every year.

General Comments: bummed I didn’t make the cut, especially since it’s one of my first decisions back. I’ll be waiting anxiously for the next few weeks. Congrats to everyone who got accepted!

After freshman year, I attended a flight program for a week, where I earned some hours in a single engine airplane towards my pilot license. After sophomore year, I went to Georgetown for a week-long Medicine Institute. After junior year, I had a paid internship with an electrical engineer, where I designed and built my own solar-powered vacuum cleaner. I also had an internship a clinical nutrition lab at a local university. Lastly, I was selected to participate in a competitive program that paid all expenses for me to take a class at a top 15 university. It was a great experience!
[] Essays: My essay topic was very unique. It was also really personal.
[] Teacher Recommendation: I waived access to see them. Spanish teacher-He taught me for two years, and he knows me through other extracurriculars he sponsors. It should have been great. Biology teacher-I knew her very well and always talked with her about my scientific interests. It should have also been very good.
[] Counselor Rec: My counselor is new this year, but I made sure to get to know her. She sponsors some of the activities I’m in. I spoke with her regularly. Her rec should have been really good.
[] Additional Rec: I submitted one from my nutrition research supervisor.
[] Interview: Didn’t have one
[/ul]Other[ul]
[] Region: Midwest
[] Country (if international applicant):
[] School Type: Magnet public school; very competitive; top school in my state

[] Hooks (URM, first generation college, etc.): Not really, maybe my interests and my unusual background
[/ul]Reflection[ul]
[] Strengths: ACT Score; Unique interests; strong extracurriculars, I guess; Demonstrated interest (applied to University Scholars program and merit scholarships, didn’t get them; I spoke with a professor over the phone about a special program WUSTL has)
[] Weaknesses: I never had an interview.
[] Why you think you were accepted/waitlisted/rejected: I’m not really sure. I did show interest in the school, which seems to be a big factor for WUSTL.
[li] Where else were you accepted/waitlisted/rejected: UMICH (EA), University of Rochester (I got an interview for REMS), I’m still waiting on some schools. [/li][/ul]General Comments: Congratulations to all who were accepted! For those who weren’t, I know you will all end up somewhere where you will be happy. The whole process is so arbitrary, so don’t read into your decision. I hope to attend Spring Preview, so I may see some other CC’ers there.

Son was waitlisted. 33 ACT 4.8/3.9 GPA. Average EC’s. He did demonstrate some interest…going to the information session when the rep came to visit his school and taking a campus tour (we are from CA). Also, he did not apply for financial aid. He did not interview or apply for scholarships which certainly would have shown more interest. For future applicants who have their heart set on this school I would suggest doing all of the above and applying ED if you can. It still may not help but at least you have the satisfaction of knowing that you really did everything you could.
While this wasn’t the news he was hoping for it really didn’t come as a huge surprise. It is a fantastic school and there are just not enough spots for all of these amazing applicants. Congratulations to those who were admitted and best of luck to the rest!

I just wanted to clarify a few things. My results post was #100.
I applied because I was genuinely interested in going to WashU. My ninth grade math teacher went there and raved about it all year. I visited campus when I was a sophomore and really liked it. When I applied way back in November, I hadn’t yet heard from any other schools. Now that I have heard from Yale and Harvard, I am no longer interested in WashU (especially because they aren’t known for the best financial aid). I am actually glad that they didn’t accept me, but took someone more likely to go.
I posted just to show how random these things are and how different school see different things in the same application. Harvard and Yale saw something they loved, Stanford (deferred early action) saw something they liked but could live without, and WashU clearly didn’t see what they wanted in me. Going into my senior year, I was nervous about where to apply and who would accept me. I applied to 13 schools just to be safe. Am I going to be upset if one doesn’t take me? No. I only applied to schools at which I would be genuinely happy…even my safety schools.
I am not upset about my decision, and, truthfully, it makes my May 1 decision that much easier. I did not intend to be unprofessional or rude, and I apologize to anyone who took it that way or was offended.
Congrats to those of you who were accepted, and good luck in your next four years…it’s an awesome school!

^^^^Good that you got at least a little humble. You weren’t unprofessional or rude…just arrogant. Its okay, you got in amazing places…believe it or not some people feel they don’t fit at those places because of a perceived arrogance of the student body…

Wow (sorry for the random comment) but your username and mine are pretty similar :)

I am not being arrogant. Numbers don’t lie. I outscored 99.964% of people on the SAT. I am #1 in my class. I got into Harvard and Yale. I got waitlisted by WashU. Those are the facts. There is no way to inflate that or make it sound better or worse than it is. Factual information isn’t arrogant.

No, WUSTL you waitlisted me…lulz…guess I’ll just go to Harvard. Thats arrogant! Doesn’t really matter - good luck to you.

Claire, I think BigDog probably means your initial response in #100, which was something…but obviously understandable as a first, kneejerk reaction. The “right” reaction is probably to just feel very fortunate and gracious about getting in Harvard and Yale (are likelies 100%?) and refrain from taking a shot at Wash U. That said, the reaction to you is overdone. You’re a high school kid, the decision doesn’t make a lot of sense, and you posted your snap reaction. I thought your clarification/apology was well done.

The shot about kids not wanting to go to Ivies because of the arrogance of the students is unfair. It’s not just the elite New England prep school kids who go there. They take kids of all sorts from all over the country. And as your unfortunate sarcasm suggested, hardly anyone is going to choose Wash U over Harvard or Yale unless it is because of some scholarship that simply can’t be refused.

Decision: Waitlisted

Objective:[ul]
[] SAT I (breakdown): N/A
[] ACT: 34 composite; 35 on math and 36 on science
[] SAT II: 800 Math II, 760 Biology, 780 US History
[] Unweighted GPA (out of 4.0): 3.92
[] Rank (percentile if rank is unavailable): Top 15%, but I go to a really competitive magnet school in SoCal
[] AP (place score in parenthesis): Biology (5), Calc B/C (5), US History (5)
[] IB (place score in parenthesis):

[] Job/Work Experience:
[] Volunteer/Community service:
[] Summer Activities: Managed 2 different robotics summer camps for students K-8
[] Essays: Common app essay was good (8/10), short answer was meh (6/10)
[] Teacher Recommendation: One was glowing and the other might have been generic
[] Counselor Rec: Should have been pretty good
[] Additional Rec: Beautiful recommendation from my robotics mentor.
[] Interview: Weakest point. I forgot to show up to my interview.
[/ul]Other[ul]
[] State (if domestic applicant): Southern California
[] Country (if international applicant):
[] School Type: competitive magnet school
[] Ethnicity: Asian
[] Gender: Female
[]Income Bracket: $100,000 to $120,000
[] Hooks (URM, first generation college, etc.): girl in engineering?
[/ul]Reflection[ul]
[] Strengths: Girl in engineering, ACT, SATII, AP courses, relevant and focused EC’s. I’m a girl going into CS and all of my EC’s matched that.
[] Weaknesses: Asian, not a lot of interest. I didn’t visit or anything, but most importantly, I scheduled an interview that I forgot to go to.
[] Why you think you were accepted/waitlisted/rejected: Uh, well I’m gonna go out on a limb here and say that maybe, just maybe the fact that I forgot to show up to my interview reflected poorly on me. Gee, who woulda thunk? Haha.
[li] Where else were you accepted/waitlisted/rejected: No where else yet[/li][/ul]General Comments:
Getting on the waitlist is flattering considering my circumstances, and my spot would go to someone who would appreciate WUSTL a lot more than I would. Overall, i was pretty impressed with the fact that I even got waitlisted. It was definitely more than what I deserve and I totally expected a rejection.

Thanks finalchild, but I know plenty about Harvard and you shouldn’t make unfortunate comments about “elite” New England prep school kids… they come in all shapes and sizes. Her response was not understandable, it was a huge put down to WashU… kids worked crazy hard to be able to get in there and it just isn’t right for people to basically laugh at it (“lulz”) on their own board.

And thanks for policing but I’m entitled to an opinion.

BigDog, if no generalization can be made about elite New England prep schools then we can’t make generalizations about anyone being arrogant. I live right in the middle of it. We all are entitled to our own sensitivities in terms of arrogance, and in that sense I prefer my kids to go Midwest or South. Ironically, that’s why I encouraged my D to apply to Wash U even though we knew in her case it was a reach.

That said, I think you made too much of it. Kids were posting their decisions rapid-fire, often with a comment or two in the immediate aftermath. I wasn’t offended at all. I actually found her “well, I’ll just go to HARVARD” thing pretty funny. I laughed out loud. But maybe that’s because my kid (not going to Harvard or Yale) also was waitlisted.

But please, would love to hear some more of your “opinions.”

In clairebear’s defense, I had a similar sort of reaction after getting waitlisted by WashU the day after getting a likely from UPenn, and especially after hearing about the at least 5-6 other amazingly qualified applicants from my school all waitlisted or rejected. Yeah, I was a little bitter. I didn’t voice it on here in the way she did…but I can see where she was coming from. It certainly seems like WashU waitlisted lots of people who should have gotten in, perhaps in the interest of yield protection.

How about you three stop talking about the posts so all of us don’t have to read your crap
