decision: Rejected

objective:[ul]
[] sat i (breakdown):2280: 800 cr, 720 w, 750 m
[] act:
[] sat ii (if submitted): 800 bio, 740 USH
[] unweighted gpa (out of 4.0): 3.85 (mostly Bs in freshman year, but A’s since then except first semester when I got a b in math)
[] rank (percentile if rank is unavailable): n/a
[] ap (place score in parenthesis):bio 5, Calc BC (this year). I go to an alternative anti-testign school- we only have 2 aps
[] ib (place score in parenthesis):
[] senior year course load: Hardest courses at my school, and courses at a local college first semester
[li] major awards (usamo, intel etc.):[/ul]
[/li]

[ b]subjective:**[ul]

[] job/work experience: n/a
[] volunteer/community service: reorganized the library at a community center
[] essays:Really good
[] teacher recommendation: one was very good, one was generic.
[] counselor rec: alright. My counselor had to leave at the beginning of senior year
[] additional rec:
[] interview:[/ul] I thought it went pretty well, but it was only my second so it might not have actually been good.

other[ul]
[] applied for financial aid?: Yes
[] intended major: Undecided
[] state (if domestic applicant):IL
[] country (if international applicant):
[] school type: Small public (urban)
[] ethnicity: Caucasian
[] gender:M
[] income bracket: 100k
[li] hooks (urm, first generation college, research, etc.):[/ul] none
[/li]

reflection[ul]
[] strengths: I didn’t list them here, but I have a lot of debate awards. I guess my scores were strong.
[] weaknesses: No leadership- my school doesn’t have captains. Also, because I go to an alternative school, we only have two APs- bio and calc, but I’ve taken both. And, my gpa could have been higher.
[li] why you think you were accepted/waitlisted/rejected:[/ul]
[/li]

general comments: I got into wash u, and will probably be going there. I didn’t expect to get into Wesleyan, but I thought I would probably be waitlisted.

@Hebrosef I was rejected EDI!!! Haha F*** them. They suck and are really weird in who they let in. I know you will end up somewhere good, though! I’m actually kind of glad I was rejected… it wasn’t my first choice necessarily and now I don’t have to always be saying “what if?”

decision: Accepted

objective:[ul]
[] sat i (breakdown): 2370 (800 CR, 770 M, 800 W), but a 2350 in one sitting

[] unweighted gpa (out of 4.0): 3.93
[] rank (percentile if rank is unavailable): I know I’m top 10% because I was elected to Cum Laude as a junior, but school doesn’t rank or give percents.
[] ap (place score in parenthesis): All 5s in French, Chem, English Lit, English Lang
[] ib (place score in parenthesis):
[] senior year course load: Hardest available

[] job/work experience: Summer Intern at Casey Trees for 8 weeks (caring for trees in DC)
[] volunteer/community service: not noteworthy
[] essays: I think it was pretty good and was told so–but my supps to other schools were probably (unfortunately) better than my main essay.
[] teacher recommendation: I’m sure both were outstanding. Didn’t read them, but I’ve read comments by these teachers.
[] counselor rec: He’s also my math teacher, knows me well, and likes me a lot.
[] additional rec:
[] interview: It was my worst probably because it was my first and I only had a 30 minute slot, but still okay.[/ul]

other[ul]
[] applied for financial aid?: No
[] intended major: I think I put chemistry, but I’m undecided

[] income bracket: dunno, high
[li] hooks (urm, first generation college, research, etc.): Dad is alum[/ul]
[/li]

reflection[ul]
[] strengths: SATs, GPA, legacy
[] weaknesses: ECs, lack of awards
[li] why you think you were accepted/waitlisted/rejected: See strengths. [/ul]
[/li]

general comments: I gotta say, I really did expect to get in since my stats are generally above Wes’s averages and I’m legacy, but I also really tried to tell myself that I wouldn’t so I wouldn’t be disappointed if I didn’t. This is my first acceptance!!!

Decision: Accepted

Objective:[ul]
[] SATs: 2190 = 700W + 760M + 730W

[] Teacher recommendations: One short & awesome, one long & mundane, one unknown
[] Counselor rec: Short and fantastic!
[li] Interview: Nooo[/ul]
[/li]

Other[ul]
[] Applied for financial aid?: Yes, awarded less than expected…
[] Intended major: Physics + Economics
[] Country: Norway FTW!
[] School type: Socialist (=public) + 1 year private abroad
[] Ethnicity: 100.00% Scandinavian
[] Gender: XY
[] Income bracket: $150-200k
[] Hooks: Non-WASP white international…?![/ul]

Reflection[ul]
[] Strengths: SATIIs, Well-roundedness of ECs & academic interests
[] Weaknesses: SATs, Volunteer work
[li] Why you think you were accepted: Well-rounded non-WASP scandinavian;)[/ul]
[/li]

General comments: Did not expect this after being rejected by Berkeley, USC and Northwestern. Apparently, Wes is just more awesome!

Decision: Waitlisted

Objective:[ul]
[] SAT I (breakdown): 2310 800 reading/770 writing/740 Math
[] SAT II (if submitted): 800 US/770 Lit/740 Physics
[] Unweighted GPA (out of 4.0): 3.9/ weighted 4.3ish
[] Rank (percentile if rank is unavailable): No rank no percentile rank. I’d estimate definitely top 5%
[] AP (place score in parenthesis): Euro 5/US 5
[] Senior Year Course Load: AP English Lit/ AP US and Comparative Gov/ AP Calculus AB/ Econ/ Journalism/ Symphonic Band
[/ul]Subjective:[ul]
[] Extracurriculars (place leadership in parenthesis): Photo Editor for Pacemaker-winning 100 year old high school paper, senior theatre tech (and press photographer and press manager) for all three years of the life of an entirely student-run theatre company that does free outdoor theatre, Euphonium player for band and three years of school musical’s pit orchestra, hobbyist photographer as well as doing photography work (I do product photography and sports video for high school athletes)
[] Job/Work Experience: None really
[] Volunteer/Community service: Nothing regular enough to put down
[] Essays: My common app essay was very good, I worked on it for a couple months and got significant editing help. It was about journalism and photography.
[] Teacher Recommendation: 2, one from my econ and euro teacher who loves me and said it was an excellent rec. The other was by the journalism adviser who’s almost more like a friend. I pretty much rebuilt the photography department of my paper with his help (went from no staff photographers to winning awards in 2 years) and I’m pretty sure it’s a glowing recommendation.
[] Counselor Rec: Boilerplate. New counselor in my senior year so she doesn’t know me, although she seems friendly and I dropped in to say hi a few times. She oversees 500 students though, so every counselor rec at my school is boilerplate.
[] Interview: Didn’t get one.
[/ul]Other[ul]
[] Applied for Financial Aid?: Yes, although I’m middle class from San Francisco, so income numbers are high by most of the country’s standards. Hopefully they take Cost of Living into account a lot?
[] Intended Major: History/Political Science
[] State (if domestic applicant): CA
[] School Type: Large Public Magnet School (ranked top 30 in the nation)
[] Ethnicity: White
[] Gender: Male
[] Income Bracket: 120k ish
[] Hooks (URM, first generation college, research, etc.): Nada
[/ul]Reflection[ul]
[] Strengths: Scores, extracurriculars (especially journalism, photography business, and theatre company), public school?
[] Weaknesses: Volunteer/Work experience. It’s not uncommon for top students at my school to take ten to twelve APs (we’re accused of being an AP mill), so by that standard I’m not taking advantage of my curriculum opportunities. Hopefully they see that I’ve always tried to avoid taking APs just for the sake of taking them though…
[] Why you think you were accepted/waitlisted/rejected: Wes was definitely sort of a last minute addon, and I think they may be able to tell that I’ve never put much thought into them. I like the school, but I’m fine with being waitlisted (I just hope it doesn’t reflect on my Ivy chances…)
[/ul]General Comments: I was a little surprised, but I’m into other schools I’d rather go to anyway, so I hope someone who cares more about Wesleyan than me got in!

Decision: Waitlisted

Objective:[ul]
[] SAT I (breakdown): 700 R 670 M 750 W (2120)

[] IB (place score in parenthesis):

[] Major Awards (USAMO, Intel etc.): None, I guess… besides AP Scholar
[/ul]Subjective:[ul]
[] Extracurriculars (place leadership in parenthesis): Drama Club (Secretary, Honors Thespian) - have also been a lead in a few shows and directed a play my junior year. [] Job/Work Experience: Unpaid internship with a local law firm this past summer. Sales associate at a clothing store since August.
[] Volunteer/Community service: Volunteer as a tutor of adult basic education at the Center for Literacy
[] Essays: I was really proud of my common app essay, it addressed some personal stuff in a light way. The shorter ones were ok, I kind of did them in haste. If only Wes had a supplement…
[] Teacher Recommendation: Didn’t read it, but from two teachers who really care about me. I’m sure they were good.
[] Counselor Rec: Decent, our counselor is fairly new so she didn’t know me that well, but probably better than most students.
[] Additional Rec: School superintendent who I’ve worked closely with for years
[] Interview: On campus with a really nice girl, I think it went well.
[/ul]Other[ul]
[] Applied for Financial Aid?: Yes

[/ul]Reflection[ul]
[] Strengths: ECs, essays, possibly recommendations, interview, course load
[] Weaknesses: Test scores, lower GPA, lack of big awards, not that much volunteer work
[] Why you think you were accepted/waitlisted/rejected: Aforementioned weaknesses
[/ul]General Comments: I wish things turned out differently but I guess they had good reason to wait list me. I would really love to get off the wait list, though, so I might pursue that depending on the results of my pending schools. Congrats to all acceptees though!

reflection[ul]
[] strengths: Test scores and recs, perhaps essay
[] weaknesses: GPA, definitely. Lack of community service and leadership positions.
[li] why you think you were accepted/waitlisted/rejected: I have no idea… I count my supplement essays to be the strongest aspects of my application, but since Wesleyan didn’t ask for one, I’m truly at a loss. But the GPA/SAT of the accepted students in my school for Wesleyan is 3.62/2123, so I guess it’s a match school for me[/ul]
[/li]

general comments:
Pretty happy, considering I’ve been tearing my hair out for an acceptance and my only other decision is a deferral/rejection from my first choice, UChicago. I admit I haven’t seriously considered Wesleyan before, putting it in just as a school where I have a good chance (and also because they didn’t require a “Why Wesleyan” essay, like many schools, there was just no reason to look it up thoroughly), but I’m going to check it out in earnest now.
