[] job/work experience: Student assistant for the summer at the UW-Madison physics department, worked at Pizza Hut for 5 months
[] volunteer/community service: 30 hours at Jewish Social Services, 30 hours at a Jewish preschool
[] essays: I thought they were pretty good. I wrote about a gift that my Paraguayan host brother gave to me on the Day of Friendship for my main essay, and for my EC essay I wrote about how dedicated I was to wrestling and how I became one of the best wrestlers in the city after only starting my freshman year.
[] teacher recommendation: I think they were pretty good. I had my calculus and Comp Sci teacher write one and I had my Spanish teacher of two years write one. I did extremely well in their classes and I’m pretty sure I was one of their favorite students.
[] counselor rec: My counselor didn’t really know me that well, but he seemed to like me a lot when I went in, so I can only assume that he wrote a nice one, but it wouldn’t stand out.

[] applied for financial aid?: Yes

[] school type: Public school–one of the best, if not the best in Wisconsin
[] ethnicity: Caucasian
[] gender: Male
[] income bracket: Parents are divorced–mom doesn’t make that much, but my dad makes a good amount and his wife makes even more
[li] hooks (urm, first generation college, research, etc.):[/ul] None
[/li]

reflection[ul]
[] strengths: Dedication to my ECs, GPA and scores
[] weaknesses: Lack of volunteer hours
[li] why you think you were accepted/waitlisted/rejected:[/ul] I feel that I would fit in well with Wesleyan. Also, a lot of students from my school go to Wesleyan so I feel that they are familiar with the type of students at my high school.
[/li]

general comments: I mostly applied to Wesleyan due to the amount of students from my school that have gone there, but after getting accepted and having researched the school more, I am beginning to fall in love with it. My financial aid package isn’t as good as I would have liked it to be, but c’est la vie. I am extremely excited to visit in April and hope that I can convince my parents that it is worth the price!!

Decision: Waitlisted

Objective:[ul]
[] SAT I (breakdown): M-720 R-720 W-750 E-11
[] SAT II (if submitted): US-730 MII-730
[] Unweighted GPA (out of 4.0): Not really sure, got a B or 2 every year
[] Rank (percentile if rank is unavailable): Top Quintile
[] AP (place score in parenthesis): Lang - 5 Stat - 4 Euro-4 US-4 Art History-4
[] Senior Year Course Load: AP Calc AB, AP Environmental, AP Psych, AP Lit, French I, Theology IV
[/ul]Subjective:[ul]
[] Extracurriculars (place leadership in parenthesis):

  • All of my ECs were centered around education reform. I had an internship at the Lieutenant Governor’s office and worked on evaluation public schools. I had a published paper in a political journal. I was on the student board of a school for underprivileged girls. I coach an elementary school science olympiad team. I also did some typical ECs like Math League, Science Olympiad, Varsity Swimming, and JV Tennis.
[] Essays: Commonapp essay was pretty excellent.
    [] Teacher Recommendation: I don’t know?
    [] Counselor Rec: I don’t know?
[] Interview: Pretty good. Interviewing is typically my strength.
    [/ul]Other[ul]
[] Applied for Financial Aid?: Nope
[] Intended Major: Science in Society
[] State (if domestic applicant): Delaware
[] School Type: Private, not super competitive
    [] Ethnicity: Unspecified
    [] Gender: Female
    [] Income Bracket: ~120k I think
[li] Hooks (URM, first generation college, research, etc.):
[/li]

[/ul]Reflection:[list]
[] Strengths: Commonapp essay, ECs, and interview.
[] Weaknesses: My passion for education reform isn’t something I could really focus on at Wesleyan since they don’t have an education program. I think that was pretty apparent in my app.
[li] Why you think you were accepted/waitlisted/rejected: My waitlist status further confirms my belief that colleges are looking for fit. I was accepted as an early write at Swarthmore and they have one of the best education policy programs in the country. Wesleyan couldn’t offer me that and thus I wasn’t a great fit for Wesleyan. I’m not upset because I know while Wesleyan is probably a good social fit for me, it is not a good academic fit for me. I do not plan on accepting my place on the waitlist.
[/li]

In case anyone is curious: I was also accepted at Swarthmore, Bryn Mawr (20k/year), Dickinson (15k/year), Goucher (full tuition), Brandeis, Delaware (4k/year), and Vermont (7k/year). I was deferred at Georgetown and do not expect to be accepted for the same reason I was not accepted at Wesleyan.

Decision: Accepted

[] AP (place score in parenthesis): just senior year so no scores, English Lit., Calculus AB, and Spanish
[] IB (place score in parenthesis): none
[] Senior Year Course Load: Calculus AB, AP Spanish IV, World Hist. Honors, Chem Honors, AP English Lit., and various stage production courses (I go to an arts school)
[] Major Awards (USAMO, Intel etc.) None.
[/ul]Subjective:[ul]
[] Extracurriculars (place leadership in parenthesis): A lot of stage crew/design work, internship at a radio show, editor/online blog manager for school’s literary magazine, spanish and math tutor
[] Job/Work Experience: 2 summers of environmental work, about a year working at a farmer’s market, a couple paid lighting design jobs
[] Volunteer/Community service:
[] Essays: Pretty good I guess. I wrote about working at the Farmers’ Market, and apparently it worked!
[] Teacher Recommendation: One was from a math teacher, and another from an English teacher. Both love me.
[] Counselor Rec: No idea. I don’t really know her very well but I think she likes me.
[] Additional Rec: From my film teacher. I think she probably wrote me a VERY good one.
[] Interview: Went very well. We talked for over 2 hours not only about Wesleyan, but also about politics, sports, and vegetarianism!
[/ul]Other[ul]
[] Applied for Financial Aid?: Yep.

[] School Type: Public arts high school
[] Ethnicity: White
[] Gender: Male
[] Income Bracket: around 100k
[] Hooks (URM, first generation college, research, etc.): None?
[/ul]Reflection[ul]
[] Strengths: Essays, teacher recs, interview
[] Weaknesses: Not enough ECs maybe?
[li] Why you think you were accepted/waitlisted/rejected: I guess they liked me![/li][/ul]General Comments:
I am SO happy! I got waitlisted at Swarthmore, but I think I prefer Wes anyway. I have been in love with the school since I visited, and as long as I can work out some financial problems, I will definitely be attending. I love Wesleyan!

@Aj1410 if you check the SIMON portal and go to the Awards tab it lets you know what your award was/ what your financial aid status is.

[] Volunteer/Community service: Campaign for local state rep, a town based Big Brothers / Big Sisters -esque program, Fundraisers for Haiti and Chile, a couple of other minor service projects I helped out with
[] Essays: I wrote about the Big Brothers/Sisters program & my Haiti/Chile fundraiser for my main common app essay; about drama for the smaller common app essay. I thought they were good and expressed who I was, or whatever. (But not necessarily amazing.)
[] Teacher Recommendation: These were both very good. I honestly was so flattered. Get teachers who know you and like you well!!
[] Counselor Rec: Very nice, also explained some of the weaknesses in my senior year schedule (town budget crisis, bleh)
[] Additional Rec: None
[] Interview: Went very well. She and I really clicked and I got to talk about my interest in feminism and activism with her.
[/ul]Other[ul]
[] Applied for Financial Aid?: Yes.

[] Ethnicity: White

[] Income Bracket: <100k
[] Hooks (URM, first generation college, research, etc.): first generation.
[/ul]Reflection[ul]
[] Strengths: Personal characteristics, AP Scores, National Merit. My interview. Class rank. My school is definitely also NOT one that Wes gets tons of apps from, so that may have been a strength. First gen student. Writing SAT score. The fact that I’ve worked two jobs for so long, lol. (That was a killer sometimes)
[] Weaknesses: Math SAT score. Science class performance (B’s in honors Bio & chem freshman and sophomore year).
[li] Why you think you were accepted/waitlisted/rejected: I think Wesleyan appreciated my hard work (at saving money while balancing school and extracurriculars). I think the fact that I’m first gen may have been a factor. [/li] [/ul]General Comments: I’m so happy. This is the answer to my prayers, I used to stay up at night wondering how I would afford college. The package is so generous. I’m not sure if I’m going yet (have to hear from others first) but it’s a wonderful school. I feel blessed. Congratulations to all the other acceptees.

[/ul]Reflection:[ul]
[]Strengths: Strong leadership in extracurriculars, original common app essay, strong work ethic, high GPA, and legacy status.
[]Weaknesses: No major awards, non-outstanding standardized test scores
[]Why you think you were accepted/waitlisted/rejected: I was fortunate enough to personally meet with the Alumni Director of Wesleyan as he was a member of the same fraternity as my father. This possibly could have skewed some of the admissions process in my favor, although not as much as my legacy status. My father also went to Wesleyan and clearly it gave me some advantage. Overall I think my strong leadership positions and versatility help me tremendously.
[]General Comments: When compared to the credentials of other students accepted to Wesleyan I am truly humbled by the selection. I am genuinely excited about the admission and look forward to attending my undergraduate years with so many accomplished students.[/ul]

[] strengths: EC’s, community service, intensity of coursework, grades in everything but Math/Science.
[] weaknesses: Dip in my math and science grades last year due to mono. My ranking. No AP Sciences/ AP calc.

general comments: I was a bit surprised, considering everyone I had asked said that I ought to get in. It honestly wasn’t even in my top 10, so I’m not even bothered. I’ve gotten into schools in my top 10 so I wouldn’t have gone even if I did get in. It’s kind of a blow to my pride though, naturally…

katy: I feel the same, I was really sure I’d get in and it was a school I was actually seriously considering… Oh well though, at least it makes the final decision easier! I already have a full ride to Washington and Lee and Holy Cross, only thing left is D Day

Redguard: oh well, it just wasn’t meant to be! Waiting to hear back from 9 still so…
