Decision: Accepted

Objective:[ul]

[] SAT I (breakdown):2340 (800 M, 780 CR, 760 W)
[] ACT:
[] SAT Subject Tests:800 Bio-M, 790 Chem, 790 Math II
[] Unweighted GPA (out of 4.0):Overall 3.95-ish, 4.0 academic
[] Weighted GPA:No weighting system
[] Rank (percentile if rank is unavailable): None (But unofficially, very close to the top of my class)
[] AP (place score in parenthesis):
[] IB (place score in parenthesis):
[] Senior Year Course Load:AP French, AP Calc AB, AP English, other honors courses. Our school is rigorous, but doesn’t offer many APs. Still, I was surprised that I got in without taking AP Physics. (I also opted for AB instead of BC calc, but that was more due to scheduling logistics than a desire to “take it easy.”)
[] Major Awards (USAMO, Intel etc.):No major awards… National Merit Scholar, Bausch & Lomb, Yale Book Award, lots of little school-wide awards.

[/ul]Subjective:[ul]
[] Extracurriculars (place leadership in parenthesis):School GSA (president), regional GSA, varsity volleyball, winter club volleyball (captain), JETS, lots of time spent at local nursing home.
[] Job/Work Experience:Research assistant in a neuroscience lab at a nearby college
[] Volunteer/Community service: 500+ hours at the nursing home
[] Summer Activities: Research assistant, summer science programs, GSA work
[] Essays (subjects and personal opinions):
[li] Common App Main Essay:My common app was about the seven years (including two in high school) that I spent in a rigid, highly restrictive back brace for twenty hours per day. I liked it; I felt that it explained the situation without being overly self-pitying.[/li][] EC Short Answer: About my work at the nursing home for cognitively impaired seniors. Tied it back to the experience of having a younger sister with Down Syndrome.
[] Why Yale?: I don’t remember what I wrote… But it definitely wasn’t anything special.
[] Short Takes: Again, I don’t remember these either. I tried not to obsess over them or worry about what the admissions officers would want to hear.
[li] Additional Essay: I wrote about a French presentation in ninth grade for which I had to make fondue in front of the class. The fondue pot caught fire and the entire school had to be evacuated. No one was hurt, so at the end of the day it really wasn’t serious; if anything, the incident taught me how to laugh at myself. [/li][/ul]

[] Teacher Recommendation 1: English teacher. Probably superb. She and I are very close, and I’ve had her for several classes since tenth grade.
[] Teacher Recommendation 2: AP Bio. She doesn’t know me as well, but since bio is my strong point, she probably discussed my passion for the subject.
[] Counselor Rec:Probably also great. She really liked me, and said that my grades were some of the best she’d seen in her career. In her recommendation I think that she really highlighted the life experiences that have been most shaping for me: wearing the back brace, living in Paris for six years, and having a sister with Down Syndrome.
[] Additional Rec: Research mentor in neuroscience lab.
[li] Interview: Alum off-campus. It wasn’t stellar, but we had an interesting chat and I thought that it went well.
[/li]
Other[ul]
[] State (if domestic applicant):MA
[] Country (if international applicant):
[] School Type: Public, sends 10-20 to top schools every year.
[] Ethnicity:White
[] Gender:Female
[] Income Bracket:
[li] Hooks (URM, first generation college, etc.): Absolutely none.
[/li]

[/ul]Reflection[ul]
[] Strengths:Nothing in my application was particularly outstanding by Yale standards. My grades and scores are alright.
[] Weaknesses:Extracurriculars.
[] Why you think you were accepted/waitlisted/rejected:I suspect that I was accepted because of some combination of my recommendations and essays… trite as it sounds, I think that my personality did shine through in these subjective parts of the app. But to be completely honest, I was absolutely SHOCKED by my acceptance. I was not expecting to get in, simply because I lack any hook or quirky passion.
[] Where else were you accepted/waitlisted/rejected:Accepted at Dartmouth (legacy), Wesleyan, Wellesley, Tufts, Vassar, Smith, Mt. Holyoke, Kenyon. Waitlisted at Brown, rejected by Princeton. Still waiting to hear from Amherst and Oberlin.
[/ul]General Comments: I still can’t believe it… I keep looking at my online letter, because this feels so unreal. I haven’t decided where I’m going, but this acceptance has guaranteed that it will be a really tough choice.

[] Strengths: Definitely my essays. Also, my extracurricular activities showed that I was passionate about certain academic areas, such as creative writing and public speaking.
[] Weaknesses: My math SAT score. I’ve always struggled with math, but I like to think I make up for it in other areas.

[] Where else were you accepted/waitlisted/rejected: Also accepted at: UChicago, UMichigan (LSA), Amherst College, NYU, and Brown. Waitlisted at: Harvard. Rejected at: Yale and Columbia.

This whole process is so strange…I’m so glad it’s over! I’m extremely happy with my acceptances, and I’m leaning toward Penn or Brown. I’m probably giving up my spot on the waiting-list. Everything happens for a reason, guys. I’m a firm believer in that.[/ul]

I used to be able to pick out who would be accepted and rejected by looking at SAT/race… but now I really can’t.

waitlisted :/

[] Teacher Recommendation: I think they were probably wonderful. I have very close relationships with my teachers, who have taught me for two years now.
[] Counselor Rec: She claimed it was great, but considering that she does not know me personally, I doubt it was anything that would stand out in the Harvard pool.

[] Weaknesses: ECs, essays.
[] Why you think you were accepted/waitlisted/rejected: I have no idea, and I’m actually very, very shocked and surprised.
[li] Where else were you accepted/waitlisted/rejected: Accepted to Yale, UPenn (Wharton), Duke, WashU, Emory (scholarship full ride); Wait-listed at Harvard, Cornell; Rejected at Princeton. I have, oddly enough, not been able to access my Columbia decision on-line, so I’ll probably find that out by snail mail. :stuck_out_tongue: [/li][/ul]General Comments: Congratulations to everyone accepted!!! :)

I’m so very, very, very, very, very, very, very, very happy!!! I’m still trying to absorb the shock of being accepted to so many places. Actually, I wasn’t even expecting to have a choice in colleges; I thought I’d only get into one school, maybe two or three. But five??? Unbelievable. Pending my Columbia decision, I will most likely be choosing between Penn and Yale.
