Listen to me, for WHATEVER class you want, go and sit in and try to get a PTA number for it. It will work more often than not. That should at least get you a class or two that you want, and you can work it out from there..

I second what megathunder recommended.. especially for the chem 2 series... waitlist the class, then make a list of lab times you could live with & show up to them all until you manage to get in one. It's been 4 years since I took chem 2, but there are always people that forget to go to lab the first day and so the waitlisted people get dibs on thier spots in the class... the TA's will give out the PTA numbers in lab (if it's still the same as it was 4 years ago). (and if you're extremely lucky, I'll be your TA!.. but I have no idea what section I'll be doing or anything, I've never TAed before :-P)

If you need a really easy GE class (art hum OR letters/sci).. I highly recommend ENT 1 - insects in art. In lecture you learn about insects.. but don't need to memorize any science terms or specifics... and in the lab section (I was in the ceramics section).. we made insect inspired art out of clay. No art talent needed, the professor Dr. Ullman is super nice & believes everyone should get A's.

great! thank you very much for your help! i think im gonna take ENT 1 for my first quarter (but thats IF theres room open)

but i have a question, when i like in the schedule, there are 3 differnet ** ** notes under each eNT 1 class. one says section A01: this open - graphics and communications studio, the other cermaics studio, then the other textiles studio. what do they mean? this course is also an arts&humanitiy OR science engineering class. so if i'm in scieng, i automatically get the A&H credits?

so u guys are saying.. i shd show up to every CHEM 2A class and LAB if time allows, and try to ask for a PTA?

you sign up for the section of the class you want.. there are 3 different lab sections.. 1) graphics/communications, 2) textiles, 3) ceramics. (I took the ceramics lab)
yeah, since it's one of those GE's that could be either subject, it counts for the one you need it to count for. Since you're sci eng, it'll be a&h since your sci eng classes will satisfy the sci eng section.

You probably only need to show up for the first 15 minutes or less of the chem 2 class & labs to see if you can weasle your way into the class. So, even though it sounds time consuming, it's not like you have to stay for the entire 3 hour lab or anything. Many people are added to classes just by doing this. (Although some professors for smaller classes won't add people because they'll just wait for people to drop)

The Registration process is seriously for Freshmen and the First Quarter a big pain in the neck. I spent some hours putting my classes together at Orientation. In the end I registered only for three classes (13 units) but i really hope that something will open up around my Second PASS time to get 4 classes (15-16 units).

I wonder though, if taking honor classes in your first quarter or GE in general is worth it. I heard that it is not so important. I qualify for Chem 2AH and Calc 21H. anybody an idea?

I recommend not taking honors courses the first quarter at least because they are VERY challenging and can sometimes take up a huge amount more of your personal time than its non-honors counterpart..

I think you are right, megathunder. i heard also heard that honor classes only 'count' in upper division classes and allows you to graduate with honors.

honors courses aren't really important at all. graduating with honors depends on gpa.. high honors & highest honors (at least for a chem major) depend on taking quarters of 194 units (optional senior thesis and research)..I think each department has different rules about honors though. so yeah, there isn't much point to taking the honors general chem even if you qualify.. you can do just as well in upper division courses if you take regular.
