I will be applying to OSU this summer and am wondering a little bit about the school.

First off I am an out of state student from your biggest rival up north “Wolverines”. It’s ok though I rather be a Buckeye, anyway!

How was your freshman experience? I will be coming out of state from your biggest rival. I doubt this is a problem and will probably be teased a lot. I plan to tryout for your club hockey team. Hopefully this is a good way to meet people.

I first visited OSU on vaction about three years ago now “Time goes fast”, and loved the warm atmosphere of the school and fellow students. I also like the close proximity of how everything was organized around the center and not completly spread apart.

Anyway… my main questions!

1.) How was your freshman exprience?
2.) Do you think I’ll have any problems coming out of state especially from the state up north “;-)”.
3.) What is the best way to meet people?
4.) What residence hall should I aim for? I’m planning for a Bio Major and French Minor.
5.) Club sports are they popular? I want to do hockey.
6.) Were your dormates good or bad?
7.) How is the Buck I.D.
8.) What meal plan should I get? I’m thinking 150.
9.) How are the Frats and should I join one?
10.) What do students do for fun? I saw Volleyball courts and an Ice Arena, but what else!?

That’s basically it until I think of anything else! Thanks.

1) Awesome. Too tired to elaborate, but trust me.
2) Nah, you will get teased, but definitely not discriminated against. People will mostly use you as an example of how UMichigan is truly worse, as even there instate students come to OSU.
3) Join extracurricular activities (your club hockey idea is good), keep your dorm room door open whenever you're up.
4) Lincoln House! Really, though, they're all good. See other threads on dorms and you will learn about them. You should have already turned in your housing app, though.
5) Club sports are popular to play, though I don't think they have a great fan base. But lots of people participate.
6) My suitemates were awesome; I'm living with 3 next year and wish I were living with the other 2 as well.
7) It is good. I don't understand this question.
8) You will be able to bum swipes off the kids who get 250 because they think they'll eat all 3 meals a day at the commons. 100 plan is fine.
9) Don't know about the frats. Medicore impression so far.
10) There's more than sports for fun, just search the student organization directory on the OSU website.

All good questions...and good answers, Valaen. I guess here's my two cents:

1) I absolutely loved being a freshman at OSU, even after four years, some of my best memories come from the times I was a freshman, and OSU does a good job of making suring the freshman year rocks.
2) I was out of state as well, and actually a lot of the folks here at OSU found that really cool, because OSU is the place you come when you want to meet a bunch of new a different people. You'll get teased a little bit, but I actually have 3 really close friends all from Michigan. It'd be different if you were really a U of M fan.
3) I always found the best way to meet people was, like Valaen said, keeping your door open in your dorm and joining organizations. Get a campus job, play a sport, you'll definitely meet a TON of people.
4) If you're a social bee, I'd say living on South Campus and West Campus are nice. West Campus you have 9 other people living with you in the same suite, South Campus has a lot of freshman and since the bathroom is down the hall, you HAVE to leave your remain occasionally.
5) My roommate did a club sport and it was like he played it on a varsity team, they traveled, they competed, they practiced really hard. But he really enjoyed it.
6) I lived with my freshman roommate for four years.
7) It's nice to have. Don't have to worry too much about having cash. But still bring a bank debit card.
8) I always say start at 150 just so you can gauge about how many you can eat. But I went down to 100 after the first quarter and I eat quite a bit.
9) I wasn't really into frats so I never joined one, but I have a lot of friends who did and they said it was the best experience of their lives. I recommend getting active during Greek Week and get a feel for some of them.
10) What don't students do for fun? Recreation is always available at RPAC, intramural sports, the ARC, Beekman Park, you name it. Two movie theatres are really close to campus, so you always have the chance to see first run movies. High Street is typically hopping all the way from campus to downtown (check out the Short North sometime). Minor league baseball, NHL hockey, and MLS games are always going on and usually have good deals to their games. Check out www.explorecolumbus.com sometime, it gives a lot of ideas of stuff you can do in Columbus at a discounted rate.

Good luck!

Cool thank you all for your responses. I'm applying this summer. Sorry for the confusion. I will start my Freshman year at OSU in 2008, hopefully I get accepted!
