Ok to abbreaviate Northwestern as NU in APP

So is it ok for Northwestern or ANY college with a abbreviation to refer it to as the initials in an app?

I think its ok, even good cause it establishes a sense of closeness

yeah, you’re fine as long as you use NU and not NWU

Umm, I didn’t think of this earlier but I too used UPenn quite a lot for University of Pennsylvania in the short essay!! That is fine isn’t it??

^^I have heard Penn alums say, in response to someone referring to it as “UPenn,” that it’s either “Penn” or “U of P,” but not “UPenn.”
Notwithstanding that, i very much doubt that it will affect your chances of admission, although the NU board is probably not the best place to ask.

I don’t think it matters either, but in the future, use this handy little rule: When In Doubt, Spell It Out!

Good luck

I did. I doubt they’ll mind, as long as you don’t use the wrong abbreviation. Makes things a bit awkward if the writing that’s meant to make you seem familiar with the school doesn’t use the usual shorthand.

Then again, maybe it doesn’t matter. Freshmen still abbreviate it improperly for a little while after coming in.

I heard this rumor that if you abbreviate it as NU, you’re automatically denied. No second chances.

Haha, that would be NWU that would be the automatic denial!

@WCASParent - I checked my essay again. I’ve used “Penn” atleast four times!! But I didn’t use UPenn! I took the cue from their prompt - which itself stated “What does a Penn education…”.

@nugraddad - Well, the Penn essay had a 300 word limit & as you can see Penn cuts University of Pennsylvania down from 3 words to 1 word!!
When it comes to the Northwestern Essay though, there was no word limit and so I used the whole name everywhere & not the abbreviation!! :)
