OMG Has anyone seen Tulane's new %of applicants admitted number?!!

totally uninvolved with Tulane (except for being a huge fan of jym).....in this economy, and given the small number of schools like Tulane (size, atmosphere, etc) AND the large merit scholarships ($24,000) offered even to students who are NOT at the top of their class......Tulane is a no-brainer.....add that to the free and easy application.....no wonder they had 40,000 applicants.....

I have a feeling that the yield may increase this year with the economic situation.....what does $24,000 bring total COA to?

Well, LOL-- I happened to have Dean MacLaren's card in my wallet, so I called the office. Forgot, though, that the school is closed for Mardi Gras, so I left a msg. and asked for clarification on the # of applications. Stay tuned.

Hi rodney!! You are my new best friend :D

Don't know this coming year's estimated costs, but the current year's bottom line estimated costs (including additional student fees, estimated books, transportation, etc, etc, etc..... was........ wait for it........ sit down........ take a xanax....... pour a glass of wine......... drink the wine...... ok... here we go..... its about .....51K. Gulp. Tuition alone is about 37K. Tulane has as very generous scholarship program- both those that do and don't require separate applications. I am hoping the yield will improve this year as well, but for some, as we see in the threads here, even with the merit scholarships, the OOP expenses, if students dont qualify for need based aid, may be too steep.

so,,,,for a private school, small class size, good weather, great city....we're talking about $27,000/year all in for those who were offered $24,000/yr merit?????

Seems like a no-brainer to me.....but what do I know??

To others: What other school of this size offers the same for this price tag(with the scholarship, of course...)?

Well, North Dakota State compares size-wise and price-wise (OOS).

^^^ Good questions, Rodney! Totally agree that its a great deal. I don't know what other comparable schools offer a similar deal. Anyone???

The scholarship $$ Emory offered my s paled in comparison to the major chunk of change Tulane gives him. DS didn't get the Emory scholars scholarship (which is a very, VERY sweet scholarship). Those who make it to semi finalist status for Emory scholars are guaranteed something like $14k scholarship (thats from memory-- can anyone help me here) but its still very competitive. Tulane hands out a lot of its merit $$ (the 17, 20 and 24K $$) with no additional application. Agreed, no brainer.

Newhope: see post....I mentioned private and N Dakota doesn't mesh with "weather" category either....city??? lol....thanks though......yea, I know there are publics that fall into the category.....keep'm coming......

and one more thing: for a student who is sure they want law or med, and want to keep undergrad cost down, but have a true college experience, I repeat, in warmer climate....can't find a match.....

The $17,000/year can be matched for similar students at UMiami, but to get more merit $$ from them, as at Emory, you really have to be tippy-top (and at Emory, it doesn't hurt to be a URM).....Vandy merit is for Ivy kids....any other ideas?

Hmmm...... how's the cuisine at N. Dakota State????

BTW, Rodney my pal, I believe U of Miami had some great scholarship deals too. I don't recall the specifics, as DS didn't apply there, but I do recall good scholarship deals, and great beaches!

They don't subtract merit aid from need based aid, do they? Hopefully, they don't : S

jym: we cross-posted....and, as usual, are thinking alike....btw, know kids this year that were offered $24,000 from Tulane were offered zippo at Miami.......zilch......

markos: from what I know, most, if not all, schools subtract merit from FA....no, you can't buy a car w your merit $$...haha.....

Yup-- cross posted.

And yup again, the need based will take merit into consideration. Don't know too many schools (though there are some) that will pay the student to come (ie stipends with total free ride).
BTW, I ran across this table I saved last spring of Tulane's costs over time . Undergraduate Tuition over Time There are a few numbers that dont quite add up, but its close enough for government work, as they say.

Thanks jym - that is handy. I still cannot figure out why Tulane has their fees so much higher than other schools I have seen, most seem to be more like a few hundred $$. Anyone got more info on that, or know other schools that have fees (separate from tuition) that high? Not saying it is a really big deal, but would have been nice if it was part of tuition and therefore covered under DHS. Greedy greedy, I know.

Oops-- The current tuition is only (yeah, "only") $35,500/yr. If you notice, the ancillary student fees jumped about $600 per student after Katrina, so probably includes extra fees for the cost of evacuation plans and associated services, etc. Dont forget there is an additonal $2k/yr scholarship for NMS. Sweet deals.

As a total and complete aside, about a year ago someone asked for a public school that had an in state/out of state tuition difference of only $2500. As seen in this post <a href="http://talk.collegeconfidential.com/1059887666-post222.html%5B/url%5D">http://talk.collegeconfidential.com/1059887666-post222.html</a> I found South Dakota State in Brookings, SD, where the cost difference for in/OOS was only about $1200. So glad to see that the Dakotas are getting good press on CC.

OK, back to your regularly scheduled discussion
