yeah int’l students can get likelies. though probably not if you applied for finaid (or fall outside of the needblind categories) because that involves a different process.

as previously stated to receive a likely it means they plan on admitting you, so at the most basic sense you should be an obvious person to admit.

as far as i can tell - non-athletic likelies usually aim at three populations: hot shots, exemplary candidates from either underrepresented backgrounds or with underrepresented interests, and ideal columbia applicants. hot shots - it means that from top to bottom your application is incredible, there is no flaw, and columbia would be dumb not to take you. needless to say i think there are few kids who are true hotshots. they are the stereotypical developed a cure for X kind if kids. the underrepresentation aspect is probably less clear, in part because i don’t know what columbia looks for. but everything from geographic reasons, socioeconomic status, first generation status, ethnicity, female applying to sciences/engineering, science is heavily looked at by all universities in general. thus do not read underrepresentation as just race. but certainly someone who is a stellar candidate, but comes from an underrepresented background would equally get in at every school that practices any kind of broad based affirmative action. lastly the kind of kid that has the precise quirk that Columbia likes, perhaps they don’t have awards up the wazoo, or even have an underrepresented interest, but their interest in intellectualism, in the urban dynamic of nyc, really compells the admission committee.

i wont guess how many likelies columbia offers a year, some schools have been known to give upward of 20% of their applicants likelies (i highly doubt columbia is that cavalier). my guess is columbia has no set expectations, but rather they just operate on kids that really strike them.

as someone mentions a lot of this depends on ‘chance’ when your application is read, if all your materials are in. and certainly there is subjectivity, what makes tom a hot shot and bill just an admit. who knows! it is like asking who gets admitted, in the end it is based on the experience and artistry of the adcom, they know what they are looking for. and as columbia mentions through its committee structure it also means that not just one person has to think something, but at least a couple.

My thoughts exactly!!! Congrats Pigs, you are so incredibly lucky!!! No longer have to wait an extra 2 months for your decision. Senioritis can finally kick in!!

i actually feel way more stressed out now, to be honest. i can’t explain why. :[
it’s like i’m trying to live up to the likely letter, and i feel more guilty for being lazy

hi hysteric - do a search on here for now about scholars. in a weird way, most unis have some kind of scholar status. if you have questions, feel free to message me.

Dont mean to sound stupid, but I need reassurance. Most applicants that get accepted by Columbia dont receive these pre-acceptance letters, do they? I didnt get one, and Im rather depressed about it.

eurasian the vast vast majority do not receive a likely-letter.

i wont speculate a number because i think that is probably a bad idea. but to know - most likelies that columbia sends out are to athletes. indeed the academic likelies are rare birds.

Knowing the way that likely letters have gone out in the past, if anything, they’d send a few out tomorrow, since they sent the SEAS batch out on a Wednesday. It seems like they send them out in batches on the same day. Like last year was the 22nd for SEAS, and the 29th for CC. So maybe tomorrow, if not next week?

I find it funny how everyone on CC is refreshing their email to check if they get a likely. Honestly only VERY few applicants get them, which means that MOST accepted never see one. I don’t know, maybe you guys are all geniuses but I’m just worrying about if I get in or not. likelies haven’t even entered my mind.

In it’s own way, it’s more like an advertising scheme.

The kid who got a likely is probably going to get accepted to other top notch schools (potentially HYPSM). The likely just gives the recipient a chance to imagine him/herself on campus and be more inclined toward the school.

Personally, I’d do quite a bit for a likely.
