OMG i'm in:) likely letter!!

Here’s some good news!

My friend and I both applied to mostly the same schools (the only difference was I applied to Yale while he did Stanford) We both, however, did Columbia. He received a likely letter from CC a couple weeks before decisions were due and I didn’t. Needless to say I was very jealous, nervous, anxious, and sad.

As it turned out though, I was accepted as well and as a “scholar”. My friend wasn’t selected as a scholar. Also, I ended up getting into Harvz while my friend didn’t.

The moral of the story is that likely letters mean nothing and that even though you may get one, it could mean you get into no other schools. So I know the waiting is rough, but it could be well worth it in the end :).

^and u ended up at Yale lol

what if they don’t send you a likely letter? does it mean that you’re probably not going to get in?? and do they send them to applicants to CC as well???

terror, this has been asked a few times on this thread. but to affirm:

1) most admitted students do not receive a likely letter, only a fraction of admitted students receive one. so if you don’t receive one - you wont know your decision until april. you could indeed be admitted.
2) cc students receive them. it is possible that columbia looks at engineers first and in this wave of likelies we are just seeing engineers.

Last year, the SEAS students received the first wave of likelies on the 22nd, and CC students on the 29th.

This year, SEAS is seeing them beginning with the 13th. So perhaps CC students will begin receiving them on the 20th or around that time.

Not that I’m expecting one, or should anyone, but it would be nice to see that a few are seeping out.

And hot damn I want one!

RD admit rates:

columbia college: 7.5%
columbia engineering: 12.2%

and wow thank god only SEAS applicants have gotten them so far. I’d really love one!

^Ew where did you find that those stats? Are they current? B/c they’re depressing…

“i think being a female in engineering from a backwards state did it for me”

Ooh sweet irony. The anti-diversity CC’er gets a 2-fer diversity bump. I assume you feel the same way about sex-based and geographic-based diversity preferences as you do about those that are racially-based? BTW, congratulations!

me happy happy happy happy happy wappy  :)

they’re from last year. it’s on the website under admissions statistics. just plug the numbers into your calculator. and yeah depressing. only reason the overall admit rate is close to 9-10 percent is because of ED rates and Fu rates

gratz to everyone who got one and best of luck to those who haven’t yet!!

i got mine too 3 days ago~! i did the same thing as vortar. i was holding onto my apps looking for corrections to make so i submitted columbia on jan 4th and got the likely letter soon after. somewhat relieved about the next four years of my life now. :)

je suis jaloux :(

i wish i knew what that said

(this is why i’m not a language person)

it sounds like he is jealous of you… i can only guess… now if he had spoken in arabic…

but i can do it " ana min kant gayur ", sounds gibberish. i know lol

je suis= I am

jaloux= Jealous?

Yeah jealous = jaloux (or jalouse for a girl)

pigs I know I said this over Facebook already but CONGRAAAATS!!! after reading through this thread it sounds like you really love Columbia - and if you end up there, be forewarned that I will DEFINITELY be coming to crash in your dorm room and party with you in NYC ;)

congratulations!
just a stupid question, can intl students receive a likely letter?

^ I second that. What’s the criteria for getting a likely letter?

Having very, very high numbers.

It also puts one in the running for “scholar” designations.
